Nanomaterials For Solar Distillation Technology, Jack Warren Stoddard Cheney Aug 2016

Nanomaterials For Solar Distillation Technology, Jack Warren Stoddard Cheney

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Water is the most important resource for mankind. Yet, 97% of the earth’s surface water is seawater in the oceans and only 3% is fresh water in ground water. Therefore, different kinds of water desalination and treatment technologies have been developed, and water distillation is a basic process of evaporating water in order to leave behind impurities such as minerals, pollutants, and other contaminants. Although distillation is known as an effective water treatment process that removes many kinds of bacteria and inorganic chemicals and heavy metals, a large amount of conventional energy and non-renewable resources are consumed for this process. …

Application Of Molecular Layer Deposition For Graphite Anodes In Lithium-Ion Batteries And Porous Thin-Film Materials, Craig L. Langford Jul 2016

Application Of Molecular Layer Deposition For Graphite Anodes In Lithium-Ion Batteries And Porous Thin-Film Materials, Craig L. Langford

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

With climate change occurring because of greenhouse gas emissions, the demand for emission free transportation has led to the development of electric vehicles. Improving the batteries’ cycling stability, capacity and safety have been the leading challenges to compete with gasoline and diesel engines. With advances in thin-film deposition techniques via atomic and molecular layer deposition, ultrathin films can be deposited to control the surface chemistry of the battery’s active materials. This thesis aims to understand two main aspects of molecular layer deposition. First, how it can influence solid electrolyte interface formation on the graphite surface during cycling in a lithium-ion …

Calcium Phosphate As A Key Material For Socially Responsible Tissue Engineering, Vuk Uskoković, Victoria M. Wu Jun 2016

Calcium Phosphate As A Key Material For Socially Responsible Tissue Engineering, Vuk Uskoković, Victoria M. Wu

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Socially responsible technologies are designed while taking into consideration the socioeconomic, geopolitical and environmental limitations of regions in which they will be implemented. In the medical context, this involves making therapeutic platforms more accessible and affordable to patients in poor regions of the world wherein a given disease is endemic. This often necessitates going against the reigning trend of making therapeutic nanoparticles ever more structurally complex and expensive. However, studies aimed at simplifying materials and formulations while maintaining the functionality and therapeutic response of their more complex counterparts seldom provoke a significant interest in the scientific community. In this review …

Custom Engineered Nanomaterials For Energetics And Energy Applications, Ani Abraham May 2016

Custom Engineered Nanomaterials For Energetics And Energy Applications, Ani Abraham

Dissertations

Recent interest in reactive material has shifted to more custom formulations targeting specific applications. In this work, preparation and characterization of nanomaterials used for several energetics and energy applications are addressed.

The main challenge of this effort is to design and prepare nanomaterials which have significant improvements associated with combustion dynamics, reaction rates, sensitivity, biocidal effectiveness, moisture stability, and are environmentally safer over the existing energetics. Nanomaterials that are used to defeat stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons, modify ionosphere properties for transmission of optical and radio signals, and for energy storage are prepared under room or cryogenic temperatures via …

Doped Tio2 Nanowires For Applications In Dye Sensitized Solar Cells And Sacrifical Hydrogen Production, Qasem Alsharari Apr 2016

Doped Tio2 Nanowires For Applications In Dye Sensitized Solar Cells And Sacrifical Hydrogen Production, Qasem Alsharari

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis explores the synthesis of metal oxide 1-D nanowires using a sol-gel method in supercritical carbon dioxide (sc-CO2), as an environmental friendly enabling solvent. Porous nanowires were synthesized and their performance was tested in dye sensitized solar cell and sacrifical hydrogen production. Titanium isopropoxide (TIP) was used as a precursor for titania synthesis while copper, bismuth and indium were examined as dopants, respectively. The sol-gel reactions were catalyzed by acetic acid in CO2 at a temperature of 60 °C and pressure of 5000 psi. It was observed that acetic acid/monomer ratio > 4 produced nanowires while a …

Microwave And Flash Processing Of Functional Materials: Are There (M)Any Similarities?, Bala Vaidhyanathan Mar 2016

Microwave And Flash Processing Of Functional Materials: Are There (M)Any Similarities?, Bala Vaidhyanathan

Electric Field Assisted Sintering and Related Phenomena Far From Equilibrium

Electroceramic devices such as varistors and capacitors are used in most of the modern day electronic appliances and constitute a multi-billion$ market. Conventional fabrication methods of these devices involve high sintering temperatures and long processing time. Since sintering controls the electrical properties, it is necessary to develop simpler and less demanding processing methods. Microwave sintering (MS) was demonstrated to be a viable alternative for rapid processing electroceramics as they respond to the E-field component of the electromagnetic radiation. In a recent report on ‘flash sintering’ (FS) it was demonstrated that full sintering of dog-bone shaped zirconia ceramics can be achieved …

Bio-Inspired Synthesis Of Nanostructured Materials On Substrates For Environmental And Energy Applications, Xinghua Meng Meng Jan 2016

Bio-Inspired Synthesis Of Nanostructured Materials On Substrates For Environmental And Energy Applications, Xinghua Meng Meng

Wayne State University Dissertations

It is still a challenging task to develop simple methods for facile synthesis of functional nanostructures on substrates under mild conditions without using expensive instruments. We have successfully developed a bio-inspired method using simple diaphragm-assisted system to synthesize functional nanostructures on various substrates under mild conditions. We have systematically studied the effects of experimental parameters on the formation of nanostructures under controlled conditions. The fundamental mechanism involved has been systematically studied and revealed. By growing the unique networks of nanostructures on a piece of substrate, a double-rough surface, with structures at both nanoscale and microscale, has been achieved, showing interesting …

Synthesis And Doping Feasibility Of Composite-Hydroxide-Mediated Approach For The Cu1-Xznxo Nanomaterials, Tauseef Shahid, Muhammad Arfan, Waqas Ahmad, Tayyaba Bibi, Taj Muhammad Khan Jan 2016

Synthesis And Doping Feasibility Of Composite-Hydroxide-Mediated Approach For The Cu1-Xznxo Nanomaterials, Tauseef Shahid, Muhammad Arfan, Waqas Ahmad, Tayyaba Bibi, Taj Muhammad Khan

Articles

In this article, we report feasibility of composite hydroxide-mediated (CHM) approach for the synthesis and doping of Cu1-xZnxO (x=0%, 3%, 6% and 9%) nanomaterial. The proposed method offers a low cost, low temperature and environmentally friendly approach to preparing doped nanomaterials in a feasible and cost- effective route. Further, we investigate the effect of incorporated Zn +2 on the properties of produced Cu (II) O nanostructures. The X-ray diffraction analysis confirms formation of the single-phase monoclinic Cu (II) O and incorporation of Zn at the Cu-lattice sites. The crystalline structure is improved and the average grain size has increased from …
