Early-Age Strength And Failure Characteristics Of 3d Printable Polymer Concrete: Numerical Modelling And Experimental Testing, Mohammad Amin Dehghani Najvani Dec 2023

Early-Age Strength And Failure Characteristics Of 3d Printable Polymer Concrete: Numerical Modelling And Experimental Testing, Mohammad Amin Dehghani Najvani

Civil Engineering ETDs

The time-dependent rheological and early-age strength parameters of Polymer concrete (PC) were investigated. PC flow decreased, and the static yield stress and thixotropy increased as the specimen aged, while the dynamic yield stress remained unchanged. The study found that the Herschel-Bulkley model can accurately describe the PC’s rheological behavior over time. The change in cohesion strength and internal friction angle over time was observed using uniaxial unconfined compression and direct shear tests of fresh PC. A time-dependent MohrCoulomb failure criterion was established. Temperature analysis was used to determine the gel time and explain the evolution of the time-dependent early-age strength …

Mechanical Properties Of Sand 3d Printed Rock-Like Samples Based On Different Post-Processing Methods, Wei Tian, Xiao-Hui Wang, Wei Yun, Xu Cheng Aug 2023

Mechanical Properties Of Sand 3d Printed Rock-Like Samples Based On Different Post-Processing Methods, Wei Tian, Xiao-Hui Wang, Wei Yun, Xu Cheng

Rock and Soil Mechanics

3D printing, a rapid prototyping technology, has great potential for applications in laboratory rock tests, but the low strength and stiffness of 3D printed samples have been one of the key problems that need to be addressed. In order to find a way to enhance the strength and stiffness of 3D printed rock-like samples, GS19 sand and furan resin were selected as printing materials, and sand 3D printed rock-like samples were used as research objects. Based on this, the samples were post-processed using three different methods: vacuum infiltration, low-temperature treatment, and combination of infiltration and low-temperature. Uniaxial compression tests were …

Utilizing Waste Latex Paint Toward Improving The Performance Of Concrete, Mohamed Leithy, Eslam Gomaa, Ahmed A. Gheni, Mohamed Elgawady Aug 2023

Utilizing Waste Latex Paint Toward Improving The Performance Of Concrete, Mohamed Leithy, Eslam Gomaa, Ahmed A. Gheni, Mohamed Elgawady

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, incorporating the waste latex paint (WLP) into the conventional concrete as a partial replacement of sand to improve its durability was investigated. The fresh and hardened characterizations, in addition to the durability of concrete, were examined. The slump test was used to evaluate the fresh properties, while the hardened properties were evaluated through the volume of voids and absorption rate, in addition to the compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural strengths tests. The durability performance was evaluated by the surface resistivity, bulk electrical resistivity, as well as freeze and thaw resistance tests. The results showed a reduction in …

Development And Characterization Of Coal-Based Thermoplastic Composite Material For Sustainable Construction, Haibin Zhang, Wenyu Liao, Genda Chen, Hongyan Ma Aug 2023

Development And Characterization Of Coal-Based Thermoplastic Composite Material For Sustainable Construction, Haibin Zhang, Wenyu Liao, Genda Chen, Hongyan Ma

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The exploitation of coal and the disposal of waste plastic present significant environmental and economic challenges that require sustainable and profitable solutions. In response, we propose a renewable construction composite material of coal-based thermoplastic composite (CTC) that can be made from low-grade coal and plastic waste. We developed and tested the hot-press fabrication method for this CTC, using coal with a maximum particle size of 4.75 mm and recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE). The effects of the coal fraction (50–80 wt.%) on compressive properties, thermal properties, microstructure, and ecological and economic efficiencies of the CTC were investigated. Test results revealed that …

Investigation Into The Load Transfer Mechanism Of Trees To Develop An Innovative Foundation Configuration Using 3d Finite Element Modeling, Kaleb Boland Aug 2023

Investigation Into The Load Transfer Mechanism Of Trees To Develop An Innovative Foundation Configuration Using 3d Finite Element Modeling, Kaleb Boland

All Theses

This study was inspired by a tree’s reliance on its root system that enables it to withstand a natural disaster, such as an extreme hydroclimatic event or hurricane. This curiosity has led to an investigation into what makes this possible, developing a new and innovative foundation configuration for infrastructure systems, and a new possible construction material and method. This study provides results on a material that does not have conventional testing procedures or standards: a tree root. The trees studied are common to the upstate of South Carolina, which are Pine, Sweetgum, and White Oak. According to the results, on …

Experimental Study Of Micp-Treated Sand Enhanced By Pozzolan, Yu Xiong, Hua-Feng Deng, Jian-Lin Li, Lei Cheng, Wen-Xi Zhu Feb 2023

Experimental Study Of Micp-Treated Sand Enhanced By Pozzolan, Yu Xiong, Hua-Feng Deng, Jian-Lin Li, Lei Cheng, Wen-Xi Zhu

Rock and Soil Mechanics

In order to improve the reinforcement effect of microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) technology on sand, the test of MICP-treated sand reinforced by pozzolan was designed and carried out considering the porous structure and activity characteristics of pozzolan. The enhancement effect and enhancement mechanism of pozzolan on the MICP-treated sand were systematically analyzed by integrating macroscopic physical and mechanical tests and microscopic tests. The results showed that: 1) Pozzolan could significantly improve the bacteria fixation rate and cementation material production in the process of sand microbial reinforcement, and the optimal amount of pozzolan content was around 10%, which increased …
