Neural Network-Based Fault Distance Estimation For Multi-Terminal Dc Microgrids, Mohamed Elmadawy, Abdelhady Ghanem, Sayed Abulanwar, Ahmed Shahin

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Fault distance estimation in DC microgrids is a critical issue due to the growing adoption of DC-based distribution systems. Current methods face limitations like sensitivity to system parameters and high-resistance fault detection, necessitating improved accuracy. This study proposes a neural network approach to accurately locate fault distances in multi-terminal DC microgrids. Three different structures based on backpropagation algorithms are developed and trained to estimate fault distances with high precision. These structures can handle various fault scenarios, including different fault resistances and the presence of noise. Two of the structures can predict fault distances from one side locally, achieving low error …

Analysis Of A Coaxial Magnetic Gear Optimally Designed Using Particle Swarm Optimization, Yasser Kassab, Abdelhady Ghanem, Eid Gouda

Mansoura Engineering Journal

One important key to improve the efficiency of adjustable speed drives is using magnetic gears due to their advantages in comparison to their mechanical counterparts. This paper introduces an analysis study for a magnetic gear optimally designed using the particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO). Moreover, the results of the PSO-based design are compared with the results of another optimization design process based on a genetic algorithm for the same design parameters and constraints. The proposed magnetic gear topology to be optimized is a radially magnetized coaxial configuration with a surface-mounted permanent magnet array. The gear ratio of the proposed magnetic …

A Method For Economic Expansion Planning Of Transmission Networks Using Heuristic Rules And Non-Linear Optimization Model, Maged Gamal Lotfy, Mahmoud Ali Farrag, Mohamed Shibl Albags, Ahmed Hamdy Khalil

Mansoura Engineering Journal

This paper presents a method for economic planning of transmission networks in an iterative manner. The method is capable of solving large scale networks where the most "worst" new lines are deleted iteratively using heuristic rules. In each iteration, a relatively small size non-linear mathematical Programming model is built to enhance the deletion process. The non-linear model is based on full AC load flow where only the reactive power injected from different available reactive power sources are controlled plus the reference bus voltage magnitude. The deletion process is stopped when the deleting of any line from the rest set of …

Probabilistic Assessment Of Power Systems Resilience Under Natural Disasters, Enas M. Hegazy, Abdelfattah A. Eladl, Magdi M. El-Saadawi

Extreme weather can have a substantial influence on a power system's operational resilience since they are high-impact, low-probability (HILP) events. Therefore, Power systems must be resilient to HILP incidents in addition to being reliable against widely spread and credible threats. Despite the rarity of such events, the severity of their potential impact necessitates the development of appropriate resilience assessment tools to capture their implications and enhance the resilience of energy infrastructure systems. In this paper, a probabilistic strategy is proposed to assess and evaluate the operational resilience of power distribution networks against the impacts of HILP events depending on value-at-risk …

Zero-Sequence Current In Cable Systems: A Study, Shimaa A. F. Salem, Rabab R. M. Eiada, Ebrahim A. Badran Jan 2023

Zero-Sequence Current In Cable Systems: A Study, Shimaa A. F. Salem, Rabab R. M. Eiada, Ebrahim A. Badran

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Large zero-sequence current is not a new phenomenon for cable bus duct systems; the question is what influences its magnitude. It was found that the zero-sequence currents were circulating between different circuits in the cable system and that they were being generated by induction between phases in the same cable route. It was determined that the zero-sequence currents could be greatly reduced in a twin circuit by symmetrical configuration of the cables. However, in a four-circuit system, no significant reduction could be achieved even by the symmetrical configuration. Therefore, in this paper, this phenomenon will be analyzed and discussed. ATPDraw …

Power System Stability Enhancement Utilizing Phasor Measurement Units At Transient And Steady State, Moamen M. Mousa, Mahmoud S. Kandel, Sahar S. Kadah, Mohamed F. Kotb

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Abstract—Efficient power system stability monitoring plays a vital role in recent electric grid technologies. It supports operators at control centers to reduce overloading on weak elements and prevent power system from collapse. In this paper Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) technology has been used for real-time measurements that can obtain fast and accurate data samples from the electric network. The system stability responses during steady state and transient conditions have been studied based on the data driven from PMUs. The proposed study has been applied on WSCC 9-bus system. Test system Simulink has been modified to include the required PMUs and …
