Nowdays the fast and increased demand for bandwidth in the telecommunication world translates into the design of complex boards exchanging data at high bit rate in reduced design cycle. Sometimes it is impossible to spent time in setting pre-layout simulations, because they are not compatible with the design time schedule. In this scenario it is better to design the boards using experience and then make simulations in conjunction with measurements, using customized numerical tools which don't need complex models.

Research in the field of Computer Aided Design (CAD) has long focused on reducing the time and effort required of engineers to define three dimensional digital product models. Parametric, feature-based modeling with inter-part associativity allows complex assembly designs to be defined and re-defined while maintaining the vital part-to-part interface relationships. The top-down modeling method which uses assembly level control structures to drive child level geometry has proved valuable in maintaining these interfaces. Design decisions have a large impact early in the design process. Optimization methods can help engineers improve their early decision making, however, design problems are often ill-posed for optimization at this early stage. This thesis develops engineering methods to use optimization during embodiment design, despite these difficulties. One common difficulty in designing mechanical systems is in handling the effects that design changes in one subsystem have on another. In this paper, swarm and evolutionary algorithms have been applied for the design of digital filters. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) and differential evolution particle swarm optimization (DEPSO) have been used here for the design of linear phase finite impulse response (FIR) filters. Two different fitness functions have been studied and experimented, each having its own significance. The first study considers a fitness function based on the passband and stopband ripple, while the second study considers a fitness function based on the mean squared error between the actual and the ideal filter response. Many digital logic applications can take advantage of the reconfiguration capability of Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) to dynamically patch design flaws, recover from faults, or time-multiplex between functions. Partial reconfiguration is the process by which a user modifies one or more modules residing on the FPGA device independently of the others. Partial Reconfiguration reduces the granularity of reconfiguration to be a set of columns or rectangular region of the device. Decreasing the granularity of reconfiguration results in reduced configuration filesizes and, thus, reduced configuration times. Academic institutions are encouraged to instill "the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context." This paper summarizes the structural, planning, and logistical aspects of offering senior-level capstone and underclass extra-curricular design projects targeted for developing countries. These projects engage the students in year-long design and fabrication, and culminate in taking students to foreign soil for delivery and installation. The necessary infrastructure and culture at the academic institution, relationships with appropriate intermediaries, and the role of a receptive national host that needs engineering services are identified. This study presents a tool that has been developed to measure and subsequently improve the sustainability performance of a building over its entire life-cycle while still at the conceptual design stage. This forecasting tool is called GREENOMETER-7. GREENOMETER-7 is a LCA tool and it evaluates the projected building at two levels: micro- and macro-assessment. The micro-assessment level provides in-depth analysis of the building products, components, and operations however, the macro-assessment level measures the sustainability performance of the building as a whole and covers areas that are not applicable at the product or component level. Joint Linear Interleaver Design For Concatenated Zigzag Codes, D S. Lin, S Tong, S Q. Li

The design of a class of well-structured low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, namely linear interleaver based concatenated zigzag (LICZ) codes, is investigated. With summary distances as the design metric, short LICZ codes with large minimum distances can be constructed. Moreover, an efficient cycle-based method is proposed to compute the minimum distances of LICZ codes. Simulation results show that LICZ codes outperform both CZ codes with random interleavers and LDPC codes by the progressive edge growth algorithm.

This paper presents the chute flow analysis for a granular cohesionless material in a hood and spoon style transfer chute and bench scale testing methods to calculate the coefficient of restitution, particle rotation restraint and the coefficient of friction between particles of granular material. The experimental chute flow investigations were performed on a conveyor transfer research facility located at the University of Wollongong, using high-speed video to capture the granular flow and subsequently analysed with the Image Pro Plus software package. A systematic approach is proposed for evaluating the cost-effectiveness of existing bridge design codes based on expected lifecycle cost. In the life cycle cost formulation, costs of construction, damage cost, road user cost, as well as discount cost over the design life of the bridge are considered. The optimal performance is selected on the basis of minimum life cycle cost. Significant research efforts have been devoted in recent years to the development of displacement-based seismic design methodologies, recognizing the shortcomings of traditional, code-specified force-based design procedures. Recent advances in direct displacement-based seismic design of columns rely on the estimates of yield curvature for the determination of seismic design forces to satisfy the specified seismic performance levels. This paper presents simple expressions for estimating the effective yield curvature for normal- and high-strength circular reinforced concrete (RC) columns based on moment-curvature analyses of a large number of column sections.
