Dielectric rods have been used for many years as waveguides and radiators. Their low loss as a transmission line and tendency to radiate at discontinuities have proven useful in applications ranging from fiber optic cables to naval fire control radar. Although this technology is well es- tablished, advances in additive manufacturing techniques and associated materials combined with the ubiquity of wireless communications and their shift to higher frequencies have generated re- newed interest in dielectric rods. Dielectric rod antennas have moderate gain and less conductive loss at higher frequencies. Similar to other surface wave antennas, they can achieve broadband performance.This …

This dissertation presents high-performance transmission lines, antennas, and phased arrays with novel packaging techniques by harnessing design flexibilities of additive manufacturing (AM). AM enables realizing multilayered RF electronics with complex geometrical structures that are not practical using conventional fabrication methods. Design flexibilities offered by AM as customized dielectric shapes/thicknesses, dielectric properties, metallization on conformal surfaces, and structural packaging are harnessed for multilayered RF applications. Although several works demonstrated the viability of AM for antenna realizations, its capability for addressing the needs of wideband, high radiation efficiency antenna systems packaged with active RF circuit components remains relatively unexplored. The goal of this work is to explore the benefits of using long exposure times with polymer powder bed fusion additive manufacturing processes and examine the feasibly of this new application as a manufacturing process. It is well known that the sintering which occurs in these systems are a time and temperature dependent process. However, the most common powder bed fusion systems use a laser which scans and heats the powdered feedstock for microseconds at a time, leaving insufficient time for the polymer to fully melt and/or fuse, leading to reduced mechanical properties. A Study On 2.45 Ghz Bandpass Filters Fabricated With Additive Manufacturing, Nicholas Christian Arnal

Square open loop resonator (SOLR) bandpass filters fabricated with additive manufacturing techniques are presented and studied. One filter contains novel 3D capacitive plates used to enhance resonator coupling. The filters are centered at 2.45 GHz and loaded with capacitors for miniaturization as low as 21% that of a conventional SOLR bandpass filter. The pass-band insertion loss of the filters ranges from 3.8 dB to 5.5 dB and the 3 dB bandwidth ranges from 180 MHz to 250 MHz. Also, degradation in the effective conductivity of printed ink as a function of substrate roughness is analyzed. Finally, a study of dielectric …
