Radiation Effects On Lithium Indium Diselenide Semiconductors As Neutron Imaging Detectors, Robert M. Golduber
Radiation Effects On Lithium Indium Diselenide Semiconductors As Neutron Imaging Detectors, Robert M. Golduber
Masters Theses
The studies presented in this work aim to improve upon the knowledge base of lithium indium diselenide (LISe) semiconductors to understand how the material behaves in high radiation environments and refine the process of turning it into a neutron detector. LISe has great potential as neutron imaging detector because of the high neutron absorption efficiency of its enriched 6Li component and its ability to discriminate between gamma-rays and neutrons. Its ability to remain functional after being irradiated with large amounts of neutron fluence has been tested and the change in its electro-optical properties with relation to fluence has been …
Hydrodeoxygenation Of Biomass Derived Sugar Alcohols To Platform Chemicals Using Heterogeneous Catalysts, Blake Macqueen
Hydrodeoxygenation Of Biomass Derived Sugar Alcohols To Platform Chemicals Using Heterogeneous Catalysts, Blake Macqueen
Theses and Dissertations
This work set out to investigate biomass derived sugar alcohol upgrading via the removal of oxygen and hydroxyl groups via the hydrodeoxygenation reaction utilizing heterogeneous catalysts. The importance of reaction conditions, catalyst meal loadings, catalyst structure and properties were probed using techniques such as design of experiments, and spectroscopic techniques including Raman and DRIFTS. The state of the art simultaneous hydrodeoxygenation (S-HDO) catalyst ReOx-Pd/CeO2 was investigated and optimized for various sugar alcohol substrates. The kinetics and associated mass transfer were also investigated to give further insight into the reaction over the ReOxPd/CeO2 catalyst.

Advances In Modeling Gas Adsorption In Porous Materials For The Characterization Applications, Max A. Maximov
Advances In Modeling Gas Adsorption In Porous Materials For The Characterization Applications, Max A. Maximov
Dissertations
The dissertation studies methods for mesoporous materials characterization using adsorption at various levels of scale and complexity. It starts with the topic introduction, necessary notations and definitions, recognized standards, and a literature review.
Synthesis of novel materials requires tailoring of the characterization methods and their thorough testing. The second chapter presents a nitrogen adsorption characterization study for silica colloidal crystals (synthetic opals). These materials have cage-like pores in the range of tens of nanometers. The adsorption model can be described within a macroscopic approach, based on the Derjaguin-Broekhoff-de Boer (DBdB) theory of capillary condensation. A kernel of theoretical isotherms is …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Functiona Materials For 3d Printed Composites, Elizabeth Irene Reza
Synthesis And Characterization Of Functiona Materials For 3d Printed Composites, Elizabeth Irene Reza
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The following body of work encompasses the synThesis, upscaling, additive manufacturing, and characterization of microspheres as functional fillers incorporated into polymer syntactic foams. Synthesizing microspheres permits control over morphology, dispersion of particles, and size while the use of direct write manufacturing allowed for the controllability of filler orientation. Two different syntactic foams were developed from similar methodologies: (1) a silicone syntactic foam (2) epoxy syntactic foam. The silicone epoxy foam showed an increasing in damping and elastic modulus. The epoxy syntactic foams showed an enhanced thermal and electrical properties.
Thermal Testing And Characterization Of Nanoparticles Synthesized For Biological Treatment, Tonie Butler
Thermal Testing And Characterization Of Nanoparticles Synthesized For Biological Treatment, Tonie Butler
Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The overall goal of this research project is to synthesize iron core, silica capped nanoparticles that, when they are exposed to a particular magnetic field, will react by increasing in temperature and emitting substantial thermal output. They will be injected into the human body for biological benefit by targeted thermal radiation. Once in the human body, ideally, they will be able to target a specific area, and then a magnetic field will be applied to induce thermal output through the process of hyperthermia. As the nanoparticles emit heat, they will mimic the natural bodily behavior seen by way of hyperthermia, …
Nitro Group Reduction For Use In Organic, Cathodic Materials, Brock G. Goeden
Nitro Group Reduction For Use In Organic, Cathodic Materials, Brock G. Goeden
Honors Thesis
The industrial demand for higher capacity, light-weight battery materials has skyrocketed in recent years due to heavy investments in portable electronics, electronic vehicles, and renewable energy sources. However, rechargeable battery technology has seen little improvement since the invention of the Lithium-Ion battery in the 1980s. The low energy density of the traditionally utilized LiCoO2 cathodic material (specific capacity: 272 mAh g-1), has limited its potential to meet these increasing demands. To solve this problem, our research group is investigating new types of lightweight, organic, polymeric materials with conductive backbones as a possible replacement for the cathodic materials in Lithium-Ion batteries. …
In-Situ Calibrated Modeling Of Residual Stresses Induced In Machining Under Various Cooling And Lubricating Environments, Julius M. Schoop
In-Situ Calibrated Modeling Of Residual Stresses Induced In Machining Under Various Cooling And Lubricating Environments, Julius M. Schoop
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Although many functional characteristics, such as fatigue life and damage resistance depend on residual stresses, there are currently no industrially viable ‘Digital Process Twin’ models (DPTs) capable of efficiently and quickly predicting machining-induced stresses. By leveraging advances in ultra-high-speed in-situ experimental characterization of machining and finishing processes under plane strain (orthogonal/2D) conditions, we have developed a set of physics-based semi-analytical models to predict residual stress evolution in light of the extreme gradients of stress, strain and temperature, which are unique to these thermo-mechanical processes. Initial validation trials of this novel paradigm were carried out in Ti-6Al4V and AISI 4340 alloy …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
In this study, the burr and slot widths formed after the micro‐milling process of Inconel 718 alloy were investigated using a rapid and accurate image processing method. The measurements were obtained using a user‐defined subroutine for image processing. To determine the accuracy of the developed imaging process technique, the automated measurement results were compared against results measured using a manual measurement method. For the cutting experiments, Inconel 718 alloy was machined using several cutting tools with different geometry, such as the helix angle, axial rake angle, and number of cutting edges. The images of the burr and slots were captured …
Investigation Of Iron-Nickel Based Nanoparticles As Catalysts For Oxygen Evolution Reaction (Oer), Prashant Acharya
Investigation Of Iron-Nickel Based Nanoparticles As Catalysts For Oxygen Evolution Reaction (Oer), Prashant Acharya
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Hydrogen fuel is increasingly seen as an appealing alternative by both the scientific and the industrial communities in the drive towards a clean energy future. Hydrogen, unlike fossil-based fuels, does not release carbon dioxide, a chief component of greenhouse gases, upon combustion. However, more than 95% of the hydrogen in the world is still produced by burning fossil fuels as this method is currently the only economically feasible option at a large industrial scale.
Water electrolysis shows a lot of potential in both hydrogen generation and in the storage of energy from renewable sources such as wind and sunlight. Likewise, …
