EPICS is a service-learning design program run through Purdue University. It strives to teach students design skills through providing for individuals, communities, and organizations in the surrounding area while mirroring engineering industry standards. BME (Biomedical Engineering) is a team within EPICS that strives to serve community partners through biomedical applications. William Sevick is an elementary school student with a congenital arm amputation. William and his family have been working with the BME team for the past three years designing assistive devices with the purpose of improving his actions in daily life such as eating, playing games, and riding his bike.

The Tumaini Innovation Center in Eldoret, Kenya, is an alternative primary and vocational school for former "street youth." The DeBoer Lab at Purdue has partnered with Tumaini for the last five years to develop and support integrated engineering activities for the students, which apply their learning to solve problems in their own communities. A Purdue Service Learning Grant project started in November 2018 resulted in the construction of a community gym at Tumaini. A low-cost custom made gym was designed by a team of doctoral and undergraduate students at Purdue in collaboration with Tumaini. In addition to the design and …

Research On Direct Shear Behaviour And Fracture Patterns Of 3d-Printed Complex Jointed Rock Models, Pei-Tao Wang, Zheng-Jun Huang, Fen-Hua Ren, Liang Zhang, Mei-Feng Cai Sep 2020

Research On Direct Shear Behaviour And Fracture Patterns Of 3d-Printed Complex Jointed Rock Models, Pei-Tao Wang, Zheng-Jun Huang, Fen-Hua Ren, Liang Zhang, Mei-Feng Cai

Rock and Soil Mechanics

Geometry and mechanical characteristics of joints are key factors affecting the shear behaviors and fracture patterns of jointed rock mass. Using 3D printing technique, experimental jointed rock specimens containing rough joints with varied joint roughness coefficient (JRC), different types of geometrical joints, and fractrues network were established respectively. Then direct shear tests were conducted on the jointed rock models to study the shear strength and failure patterns. The results show that the values of shear strength of jointed rock models fluctuate greatly with varied JRC curves. The peak shear displacement decreases with increasing amplitude of fluctuation. The lowest and highest …

3d Printing Orientation Optimization Based On Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm, Dai Ning, Lisong Ou, Renkai Huang, Liu Hao Aug 2020

3d Printing Orientation Optimization Based On Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm, Dai Ning, Lisong Ou, Renkai Huang, Liu Hao

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Part orientation is one of the key technologies in 3D Printing, which has important influence on the surface precision, machining time and machining cost of the part. This problem is a research hot point of how to balance the surface precision and machining time. The improved Non-dominated Sorting Genetic algorithm was proposed to solve the problem of part orientation optimization. The mathematical model of part surface accuracy and machining time were constructed. The chromosome model of part orientation and the adaptive crowding distance were established. The genetic operators of select, crossover and mutation were used to get a set of …

Anisotropic Shear Behavior Of Rock Joint Based On 3d Printing Technology, Xu Xunhui, Zhang Guobiao, Bao Han, Yan Changgen Feb 2020

Anisotropic Shear Behavior Of Rock Joint Based On 3d Printing Technology, Xu Xunhui, Zhang Guobiao, Bao Han, Yan Changgen

Coal Geology & Exploration

Topography is an important factor affecting the shear behavior of joint. Furthermore, there are certain connections between the anisotropy of topography and the anisotropy of shear behavior. In this study, 3D laser scanning technology and 3D printing technology were used to make molds for simulating the topography of natural joint. Then, the cement mortar samples with dimension of 100 mm×100 mm×150 mm were cast, and shear tests with different shear directions under different normal stresses were conducted. The results indicate that obvious anisotropy has been shown in the joint shear behavior, which is reflected in the peak shear strength and …

A Fabrication-Oriented Remeshing Method For Auxetic Pattern Extraction, Levend Mehmet Mert, Ulaş Yaman, Yusuf Sahi̇lli̇oğlu Jan 2020

A Fabrication-Oriented Remeshing Method For Auxetic Pattern Extraction, Levend Mehmet Mert, Ulaş Yaman, Yusuf Sahi̇lli̇oğlu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

We propose a method for extracting auxetic patterns from meshes for fabrication by modifying the existing mesh primitives directly and fully automatically. This direct approach is novel in the sense that most of the fabricationoriented surface tiling methods introduce additional primitives, such as curve networks in an interactive semiautomatic framework. Our method is based on a remeshing procedure that converts a given quad mesh with arbitrary topology into our desired structure that is ready to be fabricated. The main advantages of establishing auxetic patterns on meshes are the achieved flexibility using cheap inflexible materials as well as less material usage …
