A measurement study was conducted for the effective drainage radius of borehole along coal seam #9 of the Kaiyuan Coal Mine using the gas pressure method and gas flow method. The measurement results show that the effective drainage radius of borehole along coal seam #9 was 0.75 m, 27 days after drainage, and 1.5 m, 92 days after drainage. Experimental schemes were designed for the entire evolution of the stress in the coal mass around the borehole, and an experimental study on methane seepage in the coal mass around borehole was conducted. Fitting functions for the permeability of the coal …
Evaluation Of A 38 L Explosive Chamber For Testing Coal Dust Explosibility, Robert Eades, Kyle A. Perry
Evaluation Of A 38 L Explosive Chamber For Testing Coal Dust Explosibility, Robert Eades, Kyle A. Perry
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Coal dust explosions are the deadliest disasters facing the coal mining industry. Research has been conducted globally on this topic for decades. The first explosibility tests in the United States were performed by the Bureau of Mines using a 20 L chamber. This serves as the basis for all standardized tests used for combustible dusts. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the use of a new 38 L chamber for testing coal dust explosions. The 38 L chamber features design modifications to model the unique conditions present in an underground coal mine when compared to other industries where …

Rare earth minerals (REMs) such as bastnaesite, monazite, and xenotime are of considerable significance since they are the main commercial sources for rare earth elements (REEs) with cutting-edge applications. Fundamental understanding of surface properties of REMs is essential to identify the reactions taking place at different interfaces to develop more robust technologies for the recovery of REEs. The goal of this study is to provide a comprehensive investigation on the surface energy characteristics of bastnaesite and xenotime, as the primary sources of light and heavy rare earth elements, respectively. Crystal's orientation of REMs was identified using surface X-ray diffraction analysis, …
Computational Fluid Dynamic Simulation Of Inhaled Radon Dilution By Auxiliary Ventilation In A Stone-Coal Mine Laneway And Dosage Assessment Of Miners, Bin Zhou, Ping Chang, Guang Xu
Computational Fluid Dynamic Simulation Of Inhaled Radon Dilution By Auxiliary Ventilation In A Stone-Coal Mine Laneway And Dosage Assessment Of Miners, Bin Zhou, Ping Chang, Guang Xu
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Inhaled radon status in the laneways of some Chinese stone-coal mines is a cause of concern. In this study, computational fluid dynamics simulations were employed to investigate three flowrates of the dilution gas (2.5, 5, and 7.5 m3/s) and radon distributions at realistic breathing levels (1.6, 1.75, and 1.9 m). The results showed that there are obvious jet-flow, backflow, and vortex zones near the heading face, and a circulation flow at the rear of the laneway. A high radon concentration area was found to be caused by the mining machinery. As the ventilation rate increased, the radon concentrations …

Improving the safety and stability of composite roof in deep roadway is the strong guarantee for safe mining and sustainable development of coal mines. With three roadways of different composite roofs in Hulusu Coal Mine and Menkeqing Coal Mine as the research background, this paper explores the mechanical properties and energy dissipation law of coal-rock structures with different height ratios from the perspective of energy release and dissipation through lab experiments. The results indicate that the key to the stability of coal-rock structures lies in maintaining relatively low dissipation energy. Based on experimental results and the energy balance theory, two …

The social responsibility of corporate mining has been challenged by a significant socio-political risk from local communities. These issues reduce shareholder value by increasing costs and decreasing the market perception of corporate social responsibility. Community engagement is the process of understanding the behavior and interests of a group of targeted mining communities through surveys and data analysis, with the purpose of incorporating mining community acceptance into the mining sustainability. While mining organizations have discussed community engagement to varying degrees, there are three main shortcomings in current studies, as concluded in the authors' previous research. This paper presents a framework to …

A reliable ventilation system is essential for maintaining a comfortable working environment and ensuring safety production in an underground coal mine. The automated fan switchover technique was developed for changing the main fan for maintenance with lower air flow volatility of underground mine in the switchover process. This article established the optimization model in the main fans switchover process, used the improved particle swarm optimization algorithm to solve the model, and achieved minimum air flow volatility in the fans switchover process. Compared to previous studies, computer simulations have shown that the proposed algorithm can effectively find the global optimal solution …

Surface mines continue to implement highwalls for several reasons, such as increasing recovery, improving margins, and justifying higher stripping ratios. Highwall stability is a complex issue that is dependent upon a variety of mining and geologic factors, and a safe design is necessary for a successful surface operation. To improve highwall stability, it is important to understand the connection between local geology and blasting. Explosives are employed throughout the mining industry for primary rock breakage. There are a number of controlled blasting techniques that can be implemented to improve highwall stability. These include line drilling, smooth wall blasting, trim blasting, …
