Discontinuous Galerkin Vs. Ie Method For Electromagnetic Scattering From Composite Metallic And Dielectric Structures, Y.-Y. Zhu, Q.-M. Cai, R. Zhang, X. Cao, Y.-W. Zhao, B. Gao, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, an efficient volume surface integral equation (VSIE) method with nonconformal discretization is developed for the analysis of electromagnetic scattering from composite metallic and dielectric (CMD) structures. This VSIE scheme utilizes curved tetrahedral (triangular) elements for volume (surface) modeling and the associated CRWG (CSWG) basis functions for volume current (surface) current modeling. Further, a discontinuous Galerkin (DG) volume integral equation (VIE) method and a DG surface integral equation (SIE) approach are adopted for dielectric and metallic parts, respectively, which allow both conformal and nonconformal volume/surface discretization improving meshing flexibility considerably. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the accuracy, …

Modeling Land Subsidence Using Insar And Airborne Electromagnetic Data, Ryan G. Smith, R. Knight Apr 2019

Modeling Land Subsidence Using Insar And Airborne Electromagnetic Data, Ryan G. Smith, R. Knight

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Land subsidence as a result of groundwater overpumping in the San Joaquin Valley, California, is associated with the loss of groundwater storage and aquifer contamination. Although the physical processes governing land subsidence are well understood, building predictive models of subsidence is challenging because so much subsurface information is required to do so accurately. For the first time, we integrate airborne electromagnetic data, representing the subsurface, with subsidence data, mapped by interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR), to model deformation. By combining both data sets, we are able to solve for hydrologic and geophysical properties of the subsurface to effectively model the …

Estimating Electromagnetic Emissions From A Site Installation With Multiple Racks Of Server Equipment, Ze Sun Jan 2019

Estimating Electromagnetic Emissions From A Site Installation With Multiple Racks Of Server Equipment, Ze Sun

Masters Theses

“There are hundreds, sometimes even thousands, of servers working simultaneously inside a data center. Their radiation can be a problem and cause EMI issues. However, it is not feasible to perform full-wave simulation of these racks because of the large electric size of the model. In this thesis, an algorithm is proposed to predict the emission form rack array. The equivalent dipole source is extracted from EMI measurement data of a single rack and used as the radiation source in the multiple rack model. The coupling between racks cannot be ignored, but through the simulation, it is also found that …

Non-Invasive Microwave And Millimeter Wave Reflectometry And Imaging For Human Skin Diagnosis And Materials Characterization, Yuan Gao

Doctoral Dissertations

"Microwave and millimeter wave reflectometry and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging techniques have been successfully applied in many applications, such as nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT&E), security inspection and medical diagnosis. In this dissertation, the feasibility of using microwave and millimeter reflectometry and SAR imaging for burn diagnosis is investigated through both simulations and measurements, with promising results. To correctly model the interaction between electromagnetic waves and skin, the proper knowledge of the complex permittivity of healthy skin is critically important. To this end, the common used measurement methods for in vivo skin complex permittivity are reviewed and analyzed in …

Modeling Strategies For Estimating And Suppressing Electromagnetic Interference And Improving Power Integrity, Tamar Makharashvili Jan 2019

Modeling Strategies For Estimating And Suppressing Electromagnetic Interference And Improving Power Integrity, Tamar Makharashvili

Doctoral Dissertations

"Decoupling capacitors are used to suppress high-frequency noise in power distribution networks. The inductance associated with a mounted decoupling capacitor can vary by 26% depending on characteristics of the printed circuit board. Here, simple and accurate inductance models of 2- and 8-terminal capacitors including connections to the power and return plane are developed. Circuit models of the capacitors and layout are created using the partial equivalent element circuit method which provide options for circuit-level simulations as well as analytic estimation of inductance. The circuit solution matches results from the full-wave simulation model within 9% for the 8-terminal capacitor and within …

Coupling Path Visualization Based On Reciprocity Theorem, Yang Zhong Jan 2019

Coupling Path Visualization Based On Reciprocity Theorem, Yang Zhong

Masters Theses

"A new method to visualize coupling path is proposed to help solve EMI problems. Based on the reciprocity theorem and the concept of reaction, coupling coefficient (CC) is defined to characterize coupling power density. For two-port networks, surface integral of CC can represent coupled voltage on the open-circuited port or coupled power on the loaded port. For dipole-moment based systems, surface integral of CC can represent coupled field components. The calculated CC should be a complex scalar at each point. By properly adjusting the excitation phases, the imaginary part of surface integral of CC will be zero and thus can …

Passively-Coded Embedded Microwave Sensors For Materials Characterization And Structural Health Monitoring (Shm), Katelyn Rose Brinker Jan 2019

Passively-Coded Embedded Microwave Sensors For Materials Characterization And Structural Health Monitoring (Shm), Katelyn Rose Brinker

Masters Theses

"Monitoring and maintaining civil, space, and aerospace infrastructure is an ongoing critical problem facing our nation. As new complex materials and structures, such as multilayer composites and inflatable habitats, become ubiquitous, performing inspection of their structural integrity becomes even more challenging. Thus, novel nondestructive testing (NDT) methods are needed. Chipless RFID is a relatively new technology that has the potential to address these needs. Chipless RFID tags have the advantage of being wireless and passive, meaning that they do not require a power source or an electronic chip. They can also be used in a variety of sensing applications including …

Characterization And Modeling Of Esd Events And Near-Field Scanning Calibration Structures, Shubhankar Kashinath Marathe Jan 2019

Characterization And Modeling Of Esd Events And Near-Field Scanning Calibration Structures, Shubhankar Kashinath Marathe

Doctoral Dissertations

"This research is divided into three papers that cover, two major topics. The first topic, system-level electrostatic discharge (ESD), is discussed over the course of two papers. The second topic, a calibration structure for near-field scanning probe calibration application, is discussed in the last paper. In the first paper, software-assisted detection methods are proposed for secondary ESD discharges. The measured waveforms are analyzed with respect to waveform parameters, such as the vertical threshold of the rising edge, the derivative of the current waveform, and total charge delivered. These parameters enable automatic detection of secondary ESD while monitoring the discharge waveform …

2x-Thru, 1x-Reflection, And Thru-Line De-Embedding: Theory, Sensitivity Analysis, And Error Corrections, Bichen Chen Jan 2019

2x-Thru, 1x-Reflection, And Thru-Line De-Embedding: Theory, Sensitivity Analysis, And Error Corrections, Bichen Chen

Doctoral Dissertations

"Due to the simplicity of design and measurement, as well as the accuracy of results, the 2X-Thru de-embedding (2XTD), 1X-Reflection de-embedding (1XRD), and Thru-Line de-embedding (TLD) have been replaced the traditional de-embedding algorithms, such as TRL and SOLT. In this dissertation, theory of 2n-port 2XTD, 1XRD, and TLD are completely derived first. The self-error reduction schemes is introduced to mitigate the de-embedding errors due to non-ideal manufacturing effects of non-zero mode conversion terms, as well as the asymmetric, and manufacturing variations. The validations are performed on both theory and self-error reduction through simulation and measurements cases. The 2X-Thru …

Passive Harmonic Generation At Spring Contacts, Sen Yang Jan 2019

Passive Harmonic Generation At Spring Contacts, Sen Yang

Doctoral Dissertations

"In the first paper, the RF passive harmonic generation phenomenon on the spring contact is studied. A spring contact harmonic generation measurement system is developed. The factors that may have an impact on the spring contact harmonic generation, such as contact material, contact force, and contact resistance are characterized by the measurement system. The gold-to-gold contact is found to be much superior to the stainless-steel contacts. It is also found that the passive nonlinearity at the spring contact is the semiconductor-like junction formed by the surface oxide film.

In the second paper, we show that the maximum E-field coupling occurs …

Experimental Characterization Of Common-Mode Sources For Prediction Of System Level Common-Mode Current On Cable Harnesses, Sameer Sudha Arun Walunj Jan 2019

Experimental Characterization Of Common-Mode Sources For Prediction Of System Level Common-Mode Current On Cable Harnesses, Sameer Sudha Arun Walunj

Masters Theses

"Common-mode current on cable harnesses is often the primary source of radiated emissions below several hundred megahertz. It is difficult, however, to estimate common-mode currents that will occur in a system from component level tests because the common-mode impedances are different in the system. Research presents two methods for using simple component level tests to estimate equivalent common-mode source voltages and source impedances responsible for generating common-mode current. Key to these methods is assuming the harness can be represented with two transmission lines, one terminated with a short and one with an open. Equivalent sources are predicted for those circuits …

Microwave Detection Of Surface Breaking Cracks In Metallic Structures Under Heavy Corrosion And Paint, John Robert Gallion Jan 2019

Microwave Detection Of Surface Breaking Cracks In Metallic Structures Under Heavy Corrosion And Paint, John Robert Gallion

Masters Theses

"We live in the world of "aging infrastructures". In this environment, critical and heavily utilized infrastructure, i.e. ships, planes, bridges, etc., are operating at or beyond their designed age. Replacement is no longer an option and "retirement for cause" is the current approach to maintenance and replacement. Consequently, there is an ever-increasing demand for efficient and robust nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods that can determine the physical health of these structures. Large structures, which are primarily made of metals, either steel or aluminum, are susceptible to high-stress cracking and corrosion. Stress-induced cracks in heavily corroded steel, used in bridges, railroads, storage …

Practical Methods For Source Separation In Emc Measurements, Yuanzhuo Liu Jan 2019

Practical Methods For Source Separation In Emc Measurements, Yuanzhuo Liu

Masters Theses

"Electromagnetic emission is critical in the electronic industry with the rapid growth of the development of the electronic device. To identify the emission from the multipule sources, two methods are proposed in the near field scan and total radiated power measurement respectively.

The first method can be applied in the measurement of the field generated by multiple non-correlated sources. The contribution of each source is determined using a blind source separation (BSS) technique. The measurements are performed using one scanning probe and stationary reference probes, avoiding the need to measure the spatial correlations of the random field. The resolving result …

Near-Field Scanning Based Shielding Effectiveness Extraction For Board Level Shielding Cans, Harsh Shrivastav Jan 2019

Near-Field Scanning Based Shielding Effectiveness Extraction For Board Level Shielding Cans, Harsh Shrivastav

Masters Theses

"The conventional definition of shielding effectiveness is well suited for calculating electromagnetic shielding in the far-field. However, in the near field, shielding effectiveness calculation is not so straight forward. In radio frequency interference problems, most of the field coupling occurs in near field. Having a well-defined method to calculate near-field shielding effectiveness is important for estimating the suppression of radio frequency interference using the shield cans. In this research, a method to extract the shielding effectiveness of board level shielding cans using near field scanning is developed. Shielding effectiveness is defined by modelling the shielded noise source as equivalent dipole …
