With continued depletion of fossil carbon, there is a need to utilize renewable sources of energy and consumer end products. In this context, we examine the aerobic oxidation of levulinic acid, a bio-based platform chemical derived from lignocellulosic biomass, to produce maleic anhydride, a valuable commodity chemical. This process is carried out over supported vanadium oxide catalysts. Yields as high as 71% of the theoretical maximum were achieved at 573 K over a vanadium oxide catalyst supported on SiO2. Lignin is an integral part of the plant cell wall, which provides rigidity to plants, also contributes to the recalcitrance of the lignocellulosic biomass to biochemical and biological deconstruction. Lignin is a promising renewable feedstock for aromatic chemicals; however, an efficient and economic lignin depolymerization method needs to be developed to enable the conversion. Recently, the tetraoxy high-valent iron(VI), known as ferrate(VI) (Fe(VI); FeVIO42), received a great attention as a water-treatment chemical, because of its unique oxidation, disinfection, and coagulation properties. Though Fe(VI) has shown remarkable efficiency in oxidizing several pollutants in water, it has sluggish reactivity with some emerging organic contaminants, especially at basic pH conditions. Thus, the main objective of this PhD thesis was to activate or catalyze Fe(VI) oxidation reactions, at mild alkaline pH conditions, to enhance the oxidative transformation of organic pollutants and reduce the required dosage of Fe(VI) and contact time.

Skeletal muscle resistance to insulin is related to accumulation of lipid-derived products, but it is not clear whether this accumulation is caused by skeletal muscle mitochondrial dysfunction. Diabetes and obesity are reported to have a selective effect on the function of subsarcolemmal and interfibrillar mitochondria in insulin-resistant skeletal muscle. The current study investigated the role of the subpopulations of mitochondria in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance in the absence of obesity. A non-obese spontaneous rat model of type 2 diabetes mellitus, (Goto-Kakizaki), was used to evaluate function and biochemical properties in both populations of skeletal muscle mitochondria. Arsenic is a Group 1 carcinogen as there is abundant research to support that ingestion of arsenic in drinking water and food can lead to liver, lung, kidney, or bladder cancer in humans. The recommend World Health Organization (WHO) arsenic standard in drinking water is 10 µg/L, while the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of arsenic in drinking water is 10 µg/L. Oxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) by the nitrate radical (NO3) represents one of the important interactions between anthropogenic emissions related to combustion and natural emissions from the biosphere. This paper presents a statistical method for model calibration using data collected from literature. The method is used to calibrate parameters for global models of soot consumption in combustion systems. This consumption is broken into two different submodels: first for oxidation where soot particles are attacked by certain oxidizing agents; second for gasification where soot particles are attacked by H2O or CO2 molecules. Rate data were collected from 19 studies in the literature and evaluated using Bayesian statistics to calibrate the model parameters.
