Behavior Of Na+-Polystyrene Sulfonate At The Interface With Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (Swnts) And Its Implication To Swnt Suspension Stability, Tabbetha A. Dobbins, Richard Chevious, Yuri Lvov

Tabbetha A. Dobbins

The assembly of sodium polystyrene sulfonate (Na+-PSS) at the surface of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in pH 3 aqueous solution is described. Rather than forming linear or sheet-like chain morphologies over SWNT surfaces, Na+-PSS adopts a spherically collapsed conformation believed to be the result of cation (either Na+ or H+) condensation onto the ionized polymer chain. It is well reported that cations (and also anions) adsorb preferentially onto single-walled and multi-walled carbon nanotube surfaces leading to an increased ion concentration in the near surface regions relative to the bulk solution. This work provides experimental evidence for preferentially absorbed cation condensation …

Study Of Morphological Changes In Mgh2 Destabilized Libh4 Systems Using Computed X-Ray Microtomography, Tabbetha A. Dobbins, Shathabish Narasegowda, Leslie G. Butler

Tabbetha A. Dobbins

The objective of this study was to apply three-dimensional x-ray microtomographic imaging to understanding morphologies in the diphasic destabilized hydride system: MgH2 and LiBH4. Each of the single phase hydrides as well as two-phase mixtures at LiBH4:MgH2 ratios of 1:3, 1:1, and 2:1 were prepared by high energy ball milling for 5 minutes (with and without 4 mol % TiCl3 catalyst additions). Samples were imaged using computed microtomography in order to (i) establish measurement conditions leading to maximum absorption contrast between the two phases and (ii) determine interfacial volume. The optimal energy for measurement was determined to be 15 keV …

Cobalt-Doped Ceria/Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanocomposite As An Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction Catalyst And Supercapacitor Material, Shaikh Parwaiz, Kousik Bhunia, Ashok Kumar Das, Mohammad Mansoob Khan Dr, Debabrata Pradhan Aug 2017

Cobalt-Doped Ceria/Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanocomposite As An Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction Catalyst And Supercapacitor Material, Shaikh Parwaiz, Kousik Bhunia, Ashok Kumar Das, Mohammad Mansoob Khan Dr, Debabrata Pradhan

Dr. Mohammad Mansoob Khan

Design and development of highly active and durable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst to replace Pt- and Pt-based materials are present challenges in fuel cell research including direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC). The methanol crossover and its subsequent oxidation at the cathode is another unwanted issue that reduces the efficiency of DMFC. Herein we report cobalt-doped ceria (Co-CeO2) as a promising electrocatalyst with competent ORR kinetics mainly through a four-electron reduction pathway, and it surpasses Pt/C by a great margin in terms of stability and methanol tolerance. The Co-CeO2 nanoparticles of diameter 4–7 nm were uniformly …

Interfacial Thermal Transport In Monolayer Mos2- And Graphene-Based Devices, Zlatan Aksamija, Amin Salehi-Khojin, Cameron J. Foss, Arnab K. Majee, Fatemeh Khalili-Araghi Jul 2017

Interfacial Thermal Transport In Monolayer Mos2- And Graphene-Based Devices, Zlatan Aksamija, Amin Salehi-Khojin, Cameron J. Foss, Arnab K. Majee, Fatemeh Khalili-Araghi

Zlatan Aksamija

In many device architectures based on 2D materials, a major part of the heat generated in hot-spots dissipates in the through-plane direction where the interfacial thermal resistances can significantly restrain the heat removal
capability of the device. Despite its importance, there is an enormous (1–2 orders of magnitude) disagreement in the literature on the interfacial thermal transport characteristics of MoS2 and other transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) (0.1–14 MW m−2 K−1). In this report, the thermal boundary conductance (TBC) across MoS2 and graphene monolayers with SiO2/Si and sapphire substrates is systematically investigated using a
custom-made electrical thermometry platform followed by 3D …

Highly Directional Receiver And Source Antennas Using Photonic Band Gap Crystals, Rana Biswas, Gary L. Tuttle, Ekmel Ozbay, Burak Temelkuran, Mihail Sigalas, Kai-Ming Ho

Gary Tuttle

A directional antenna made with photonic band gap structures has been presented. The directional antenna is formed with two photonic band gap structures oriented back to back and separated from each other by a distance to form a resonant cavity between the photonic band gap structures. An antenna element is placed in the resonant cavity. The resonant frequency of the cavity is tuned by adjusting the distance between the photonic band gap structures. The resonant cavity can be asymmetrical or symmetrical.

Weak Anti-Localization And Quantum Oscillations Of Surface States In Topological Insulator Bi2se2te, Lihong Bao, Liang He, Nicholas R. Meyer, Xufeng Kou, Peng Zhang, Zhi-Gang Chen, Alexei V. Fedorov, Trevor M. Riedemann, Thomas A. Lograsso, Kang L. Wang, Gary Tuttle, Faxian Xiu

Gary Tuttle

Topological insulators, a new quantum state of matter, create exciting opportunities for studying topological quantum physics and for exploring spintronic applications due to their gapless helical metallic surface states. Here, we report the observation of weak anti-localization and quantum oscillations originated from surface states in Bi2Se2Te crystals. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on cleaved Bi2Se2Te crystals show a well-defined linear dispersion without intersection of the conduction band. The measured weak anti-localization effect agrees well with the Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka model and the extracted phase coherent length shows a power-law dependence with temperature ( ∼T−0.44), indicating the presence of the surface states. …

Free And Open-Source Control Software For 3-D Motion And Processing, Bas Wijnen, G. C. Anzalone, Amberlee S. Haselhuhn, Paul G. Sanders, Joshua M. Pearce

Joshua M. Pearce

RepRap 3-D printers and their derivatives using conventional firmware are limited by: 1) requiring technical knowledge, 2) poor resilience with unreliable hardware, and 3) poor integration in complicated systems. In this paper, a new control system called Franklin, for CNC machines in general and 3-D printers specifically, is presented that enables web-based three dimensional control of additive, subtractive and analytical tools from any Internet connected device. Franklin can be set up and controlled entirely from a web interface; it uses a custom protocol which allows it to continue printing when the connection is temporarily lost, and allows communication with scripts.

Integrated Voltage—Current Monitoring And Control Of Gas Metal Arc Weld Magnetic Ball-Jointed Open Source 3-D Printer, Yuenyong Nilsiam, Amberlee S. Haselhuhn, Bas Wijnen, Paul G. Sanders, Joshua M. Pearce

Joshua M. Pearce

To provide process optimization of metal fabricating self-replicating rapid prototyper (RepRap) 3-D printers requires a low-cost sensor and data logger system to measure current (I) and voltage (V) of the gas metal arc welders (GMAW). This paper builds on previous open-source hardware development to provide a real-time measurement of welder I-V where the measuring circuit is connected to two analog inputs of the Arduino that is used to control the 3-D printer itself. Franklin firmware accessed through a web interface that is used to control the printer allows storing the measured values and downloading those stored readings to the user’s …

Open-Source Photometric System For Enzymatic Nitrate Quantification, Ben T. Wittbrodt, D. A. Squires, J. Walbeck, E. Campbell, W. H. Campbell, Joshua M. Pearce May 2017

Open-Source Photometric System For Enzymatic Nitrate Quantification, Ben T. Wittbrodt, D. A. Squires, J. Walbeck, E. Campbell, W. H. Campbell, Joshua M. Pearce

Joshua M. Pearce

Nitrate, the most oxidized form of nitrogen, is regulated to protect people and animals from harmful levels as there is a large over abundance due to anthropogenic factors. Widespread field testing for nitrate could begin to address the nitrate pollution problem, however, the Cadmium Reduction Method, the leading certified method to detect and quantify nitrate, demands the use of a toxic heavy metal. An alternative, the recently proposed Environmental Protection Agency Nitrate Reductase Nitrate-Nitrogen Analysis Method, eliminates this problem but requires an expensive proprietary spectrophotometer. The development of an inexpensive portable, handheld photometer will greatly expedite field nitrate analysis to …

Low-Cost Open-Source Voltage And Current Monitor For Gas Metal Arc Weld 3d Printing, Anthony Pinar, Bas Wijnen, Gerald C. Anzalone, Timothy C. Havens, Paul G. Sanders, Joshua M. Pearce

Joshua M. Pearce

Arduino open-source microcontrollers are well known in sensor applications for scientific equipment and for controlling RepRap 3D printers. Recently low-cost open-source gas metal arc weld (GMAW) RepRap 3D printers have been developed. The entry-level welders used have minimal controls and therefore lack any real-time measurement of welder voltage or current. The preliminary work on process optimization of GMAW 3D printers requires a low-cost sensor and data logger system to measure welder current and voltage. This paper reports on the development of a low-cost open-source power measurement sensor system based on Arduino architecture. The sensor system was designed, built, and tested …

Open Source Database And Website To Provide Free And Open Access To Inactive U.S. Patents In The Public Domain, Yuenyong Nilsiam, Joshua M. Pearce

Joshua M. Pearce

Although theoretically the patent system is meant to bolster innovation, the current United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is cumbersome and involves a significant time investment to locate inactive patents less than 20 years old. This article reports on the development of an open source database to find these public domain ideas. First, a search strategy is explained. Then the operation and use of free and open source software are detailed to meet the needs of open hardware innovators. Finally, a case study is presented to demonstrate the utility of the approach with 3-D printing. The results showed how …

Influence Of Oxygen Concentration On The Performance Of Ultra-Thin Rf Magnetron Sputter Deposited Indium Tin Oxide Films As A Top Electrode For Photovoltaic Devices, Jephias Gwamuri, Murugesan Marikkannan, J. Mayandi, Patrick Bowen, Joshua M. Pearce

Joshua M. Pearce

The opportunity for substantial efficiency enhancements of thin film hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) solar photovoltaic (PV) cells using plasmonic absorbers requires ultra-thin transparent conducting oxide top electrodes with low resistivity and high transmittances in the visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Fabricating ultra-thin indium tin oxide (ITO) films (sub-50 nm) using conventional methods has presented a number of challenges; however, a novel method involving chemical shaving of thicker (greater than 80 nm) RF sputter deposited high-quality ITO films has been demonstrated. This study investigates the effect of oxygen concentration on the etch rates of RF sputter deposited ITO films to …

Controlling Optical Absorption In Metamaterial Absorbers For Plasmonic Solar Cells, Wyatt Adams, Ankit Vora, Jephias Gwamuri, Joshua M. Pearce, Durdo O. Guney

Joshua M. Pearce

Metals in the plasmonic metamaterial absorbers for photovoltaics constitute undesired resistive heating. However, tailoring the geometric skin depth of metals can minimize resistive losses while maximizing the optical absorbance in the active semiconductors of the photovoltaic device. Considering experimental permittivity data for InxGa1-xN, absorbance in the semiconductor layers of the photovoltaic device can reach above 90%. The results here also provides guidance to compare the performance of different semiconductor materials. This skin depth engineering approach can also be applied to other optoelectronic devices, where optimizing the device performance demands minimizing resistive losses and power consumption, such as photodetectors, laser diodes, …

Removal Of Chlorine From Chlorine-Nitrogen Mixture In A Film Of Liquid Water, Sarwan S. Sandhu Mar 2017

Removal Of Chlorine From Chlorine-Nitrogen Mixture In A Film Of Liquid Water, Sarwan S. Sandhu

Sarwan S. Sandhu

In industry there are many examples of absorption of a gas with or without chemical reaction in the liquid phase. In physical absorption, a particular gaseous component is removed from a gas mixture due to its larger solubility in the liquid phase solvent. The removal of butane and pentane from a refinery gas mixture by a heavy oil in the liquid phase is an example of physical absorption. In absorption with chemical reaction, the gaseous component to be removed transfers across the gas-liquid interface due to a difference in the bulk chemical potentials or concentrations in the two phases. The …

High Thermal Conductivity In Soft Elastomers With Elongated Liquid Metal Inclusions, Michael D. Bartlett, Navid Kazem, Matthew J. Powell-Palm, Xiaonan Huang, Wenhuan Sun, Jonathan A. Malen, Carmel Majidi Majidi Dec 2016

High Thermal Conductivity In Soft Elastomers With Elongated Liquid Metal Inclusions, Michael D. Bartlett, Navid Kazem, Matthew J. Powell-Palm, Xiaonan Huang, Wenhuan Sun, Jonathan A. Malen, Carmel Majidi Majidi

Michael Bartlett

Soft dielectric materials typically exhibit poor heat transfer properties due to the dynamics of phonon transport, which constrain thermal conductivity (k) to decrease monotonically with decreasing elastic modulus (E). This thermal−mechanical trade-off is limiting for wearable computing, soft robotics, and other emerging applications that require materials with both high thermal conductivity and low mechanical stiffness. Here, we overcome this constraint with an electrically insulating composite that exhibits an unprecedented combination of metal-like thermal conductivity, an elastic compliance similar to soft biological tissue (Young’s modulus < 100 kPa), and the capability to undergo extreme deformations (>600% strain). By incorporating liquid metal …

Impact Of Mismatch Angle On Electronic Transport Across Grain Boundaries And Interfaces In 2d Materials, Zlatan Aksamija Dec 2016

Impact Of Mismatch Angle On Electronic Transport Across Grain Boundaries And Interfaces In 2d Materials, Zlatan Aksamija

Zlatan Aksamija

We study the impact of grain boundaries (GB) and misorientation angles between grains on electronic
transport in 2-dimensional materials. Here we have developed a numerical model based on the firstprinciples
electronic bandstructure calculations in conjunction with a method which computes electron
transmission coefficients from simultaneous conservation of energy and momentum at the interface to
essentially evaluate GB/interface resistance in a Landauer formalism. We find that the resistance across
graphene GBs vary over a wide range depending on misorientation angles and type of GBs, starting
from 53 Ω μm for low-mismatch angles in twin (symmetric) GBs to about 1020 Ω μm …
