Multiscale Modeling Of Electrolytes For Energy Storage And Conversion, Fatemeh Sepehr Dec 2016

Multiscale Modeling Of Electrolytes For Energy Storage And Conversion, Fatemeh Sepehr

Doctoral Dissertations

Fuel cells, redox flow batteries, and secondary ion batteries are under active investigation to fulfill the requirements of efficient and sustainable energy storage and conversion technologies. The discovery of high-performance stable electrolytes that are relatively cheap and versatile is crucial to the commercialization of these electrochemical devices and necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the materials (i.e., from the atomistic to continuum levels). This dissertation is on multiscale modeling and simulations of several electrolytes under consideration in vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs), alkaline fuel cells (AFCs), or secondary magnesium batteries.

The hydrated structure and associated solvation Gibbs energies were determined for …

Experimental And Numerical Evaluation Of A New Composite Pressure Pipe For A Trenchless Rehabilitation Technology, Xuanchen Yen Jul 2016

Experimental And Numerical Evaluation Of A New Composite Pressure Pipe For A Trenchless Rehabilitation Technology, Xuanchen Yen

Doctoral Dissertations

The information presented in this dissertation is based on research work conducted at Trenchless Technology Center (TTC) at Louisiana Tech University. This work was performed through a contract with China University of Geoscience (CUG) for a gas company. China's gas pipelines need replacement or rehabilitation after 15 to 30 years of service. China's gas industry is looking for suitable techniques to transfer into their market.

When compared to conventional excavation pipeline renewal or replacement methods, there are obvious advantages of TRT for gas pipelines that can impact the triple bottom-line of economic, social and environmental benefits. An introduction of TRT …

Efficient Time-Dependent System Reliability Analysis, Zhifu Zhu Jan 2016

Efficient Time-Dependent System Reliability Analysis, Zhifu Zhu

Doctoral Dissertations

"Engineering systems are usually subjected to time-variant loads and operate under time-dependent uncertainty; system performances are therefore time-dependent. Accurate and efficient estimate of system reliability is crucial for decision makings on system design, lifetime cost estimate, maintenance strategy, etc. Although significant progresses have been made in time-independent reliability analysis for components and systems, time-dependent system reliability methodologies are still limited. This dissertation is motivated by the need of accurate and effective reliability prediction for engineering systems under time-dependent uncertainty. Based on the classic First and Second Order Reliability Method (FORM and SORM), a system reliability method is developed for multidisciplinary …

Applications Of Simulation And Optimization Techniques In Optimizing Room And Pillar Mining Systems, Angelina Konadu Anani Jan 2016

Applications Of Simulation And Optimization Techniques In Optimizing Room And Pillar Mining Systems, Angelina Konadu Anani

Doctoral Dissertations

"The goal of this research was to apply simulation and optimization techniques in solving mine design and production sequencing problems in room and pillar mines (R&P). The specific objectives were to: (1) apply Discrete Event Simulation (DES) to determine the optimal width of coal R&P panels under specific mining conditions; (2) investigate if the shuttle car fleet size used to mine a particular panel width is optimal in different segments of the panel; (3) test the hypothesis that binary integer linear programming (BILP) can be used to account for mining risk in R&P long range mine production sequencing; and (4) …
