Advancements in computer vision are still not reliable enough for detecting video content including humans and their actions. Microtask crowdsourcing on task markets such as Amazon Mechnical Turk and Upwork can bring humans into the loop. However, engaging crowd workers to annotate non-public video footage risks revealing the identities of people in the video who may have a right to anonymity.
This thesis demonstrates how we can engage untrusted crowd workers to detect behaviors and objects, while robustly concealing the identities of all faces. We developed a web-based system that presents obfuscated videos to crowd workers, and provides them with …

Entity resolution is an important application in field of data cleaning. Standard approaches like deterministic methods and probabilistic methods are generally used for this purpose. Crowdsourcing has been used in different domains such as healthcare, computer science, environmental sciences, business and marketing. However, only recently, queueing models useful in the context of crowdsourcing have been studied. These studies involve queueing models of the type M/M/c, MAP/PH/1, and MAP/PH/c. In this paper we introduce vacation and working vacation in the context of MAP/PH/1 with crowdsourcing and highlight the qualitative aspects of the model through illustrative examples.

This thesis presents the idea of mobile application development that aims at data collection for transportation safety assessment using cloud-based database. At present, transportation safety assessment relies only on data available from crash, accident reports. In combination with this crash data, it is possible that conflict data can become a very influential performance measure for transportation safety assessment. A transportation conflict happens when two parties cross a path and one party must take an action to avoid a collision or a crash. This dissertation presents the design, development and validation of new data integration methods for mapping the extent of snow cover based on open access ground station measurements, remote sensing images, volunteer observer snow reports, and cross country ski track recordings from location-enabled mobile devices. The first step of the data integration procedure includes data discovery, data retrieval, and data quality control of snow observations at ground stations.
