An Investigation Of Composite Failure Analyses And Damage Evolution In Finite Element Models, Ann M. Frappier Dec 2016

An Investigation Of Composite Failure Analyses And Damage Evolution In Finite Element Models, Ann M. Frappier

Open Access Theses

This paper presents a composite conical structure used commonly in flight-qualification testing. This structure’s overall load-displacement behavioral response is characterized. Mixed-mode multidelamination in a layered composite specimen is considered in Abaqus/Explicit through both the Virtual Crack Closure Technique and Cohesive Elements. The Virtual Crack Closure Technique and Cohesive Elements are compared against experimental test results presented in literature. Further, a thorough comparison in which the effects of failure criteria type, through-thickness mesh density, and finite element type on the progressive failure response of this composite assembly is discussed. Lastly, Abaqus/Standard and Helius PFA are compared in order to gain confidence …

Numerical Simulation Of High Velocity Impact Of A Single Polymer Particle During Cold Spray Deposition, Sagar P. Shah Nov 2016

Numerical Simulation Of High Velocity Impact Of A Single Polymer Particle During Cold Spray Deposition, Sagar P. Shah

Masters Theses

Abstract

The cold spray process is an additive manufacturing technology primarily suited for ductile metals, and mainly utilized in coating surfaces, manufacturing of freeform parts and repair of damaged components. The process involves acceleration of solid micro-particles in a supersonic gas flow and coating build-up by bonding upon high velocity impact onto a substrate. Coating deposition relies on the kinetic energy of the particles. The main objective of this study was to investigate the mechanics of polymer cold spray process and deformation behavior of polymers to improve technological implementation of the process.

A finite element model was created to simulate …

Continuum Modeling Of The Densification Of W-Ni-Fe During Selective Laser Sintering, Connor M. West Jun 2016

Continuum Modeling Of The Densification Of W-Ni-Fe During Selective Laser Sintering, Connor M. West

Master's Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to effectively model the time history of the temperature distribution during the selective laser sintering process and use this information to investigate the resulting relative density. The temperature is a critical parameter of the process because it directly effects the overall quality of the part. First, an efficient, affordable, and reliable simulation was developed within the finite element software, Abaqus. Next, the results from the simulations were compared to the experimental results performed by Wang et al. (2016). The FEA model consisted of a 3 layer simulation. Multiple simulations at various laser recipes were …

Spinal Implant Design And Subsidence: Finite Element Analysis, Samuel G. Stanaford, Timothy L. Norman Apr 2016

Spinal Implant Design And Subsidence: Finite Element Analysis, Samuel G. Stanaford, Timothy L. Norman

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)

Artificial disc replacement and intervertebral fusion devices are alternatives to pain and spinal instability when disc failure occurs. Understanding the mechanical performance of these devices can be achieved by long term clinical studies, costly experimental studies or through numeral analysis using finite elements. This study was conducted to study the subsidence, or vertical motion of the artificial disc or fusion device into adjacent vertebral body segments. Specifically, the effect of implant size, shape and sagittal profile was studied using a finite element model of the L4/L5 human spine using ABAQUS finite element software. Results compared the stress state and subsidence …
