Interplays Of Co2, Subnanometer Metal Clusters, And Tio2: Implications For Catalysis And Co2 Photoreduction, Chi-Ta Yang Sep 2015

Interplays Of Co2, Subnanometer Metal Clusters, And Tio2: Implications For Catalysis And Co2 Photoreduction, Chi-Ta Yang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research is motivated by two significant challenges facing the planet: reducing the emission of CO2 to the atmosphere and production of sustainable fuels by harnessing solar energy. The main objective of this work is the study of promising photocatalysts for CO2 reduction. DFT modeling of CO2, subnanometer Ag&Pt clusters, and anatase TiO2 (101) surface is employed to gain fundamental understanding of the catalytic process, followed by validation using a guided experimental endeavor. The binding mechanism of CO2 on the surface is investigated in detail to gain insights into the catalytic activity and to assist …

Applications Of Microbial Desalination And Photocatalytic Disinfection For The Removal Of Contaminants In Drinking Water, Kristen Shirlee-Ann Brastad May 2015

Applications Of Microbial Desalination And Photocatalytic Disinfection For The Removal Of Contaminants In Drinking Water, Kristen Shirlee-Ann Brastad

Theses and Dissertations

Trends in drinking water treatment in recent years have been moving toward the use of membrane separation in order to reduce contaminants in water. There are many forms of membrane separation technology such as ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, microfiltration, reverse osmosis, and extruded ion exchange membranes. These membranes have many different applications and may be used to remove many materials from water such as salts, viruses and bacteria, selectively remove cations or anions, or remove organics.

Microbial desalination cells (MDCs) are an emerging concept which use bioelectric potential produced from organics via microbial metabolism to accomplish desalination. MDCs consist of three compartments, …

Solar Photocatalytic Reduction Of Zn2+ Using Graphene-Based Tio2 Composite Catalyst For Application To Cso Treatment, Gloria Kumordzi Apr 2015

Solar Photocatalytic Reduction Of Zn2+ Using Graphene-Based Tio2 Composite Catalyst For Application To Cso Treatment, Gloria Kumordzi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The improvement of photocatalyst efficiency in utilizing the majority of wavelengths in the solar spectrum, an abundant natural resource, presents the next step in the large scale application of photocatalysis for the treatment of dissolved organic and inorganic pollutants in wastewater. In this study, a composite catalyst of TiO2 and Graphene synthesized by a hydrothermal treatment method is used to photo-reduce Zn2+, the most abundant heavy metal found in combined sewer overflows (CSOs). The performance of this composite catalyst was assessed under various process conditions such as pH, light intensity, catalyst loading and light source. The TiO …

Synthesis And Characterization Of A Novel Polyacetal & Design And Preparation Of Superhydrophobic Photocatalytic Surfaces, Yuanyuan Zhao Feb 2015

Synthesis And Characterization Of A Novel Polyacetal & Design And Preparation Of Superhydrophobic Photocatalytic Surfaces, Yuanyuan Zhao

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Polyacetal polymers are thermoplastic resins that play an important role in industry because of numerous industrial applications including automobile; household appliance; etc. The first part of this thesis (Chapter 2) is about the synthesis of a new acetal copolymer that exhibits superior thermal stability. The second part of this thesis (Chapter 3) is about the preparation and applications of TiO2-based polymer nanocomposite films, where the reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated on the solid surface. Catalytic nanocomposite films are an active area of research because of their potential uses for environmental remediation and chemical synthesis. Furthermore, to …

The Impact Of Capsid Proteins On Virus Removal And Inactivation During Water Treatment Processes, Brooke K. Mayer, Yu Yang, Daniel Gerrity, Morteza A. Abbaszadegan Jan 2015

The Impact Of Capsid Proteins On Virus Removal And Inactivation During Water Treatment Processes, Brooke K. Mayer, Yu Yang, Daniel Gerrity, Morteza A. Abbaszadegan

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This study examined the effect of the amino acid composition of protein capsids on virus inactivation using ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and titanium dioxide photocatalysis, and physical removal via enhanced coagulation using ferric chloride. Although genomic damage is likely more extensive than protein damage for viruses treated using UV, proteins are still substantially degraded. All amino acids demonstrated significant correlations with UV susceptibility. The hydroxyl radicals produced during photocatalysis are considered nonspecific, but they likely cause greater overall damage to virus capsid proteins relative to the genome. Oxidizing chemicals, including hydroxyl radicals, preferentially degrade amino acids over nucleotides, and the amino …

Investigation Of Lanthanide-Doped Anatase Tio2 Core-Shell Nanoparticles For Photocatalysis And Gas Sensing, Rezwanur Rahman Jan 2015

Investigation Of Lanthanide-Doped Anatase Tio2 Core-Shell Nanoparticles For Photocatalysis And Gas Sensing, Rezwanur Rahman

MSU Graduate Theses

Anatase TiO2 has been shown to be potential applications for photo-remediation of chemical waste as well as for photocatalytic splitting of water. The catalytic properties of TiO2 materials can be modified by doping with lanthanide (Ln) ions. In order to minimize the distortion and/or change of the structure of TiO2 nanoparticles, surface doping of anatase TiO2 nanoparticles (~ 14 nm) with several Ln ions (Nd3+, Gd3+, Eu3+, Yb3+) has been successfully made. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman characterization shows that the anatase phase of treated nanoparticles is well preserved. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows that the majority of the nanoparticles …

Colloidal Plasmonic Titanium Nitride Nanoparticles: Properties And Applications, Urcan Guler, Sergey Suslov, Alexander V. Kildishev, Alexandra Boltasseva, Vladimir M. Shalaev Dec 2014

Colloidal Plasmonic Titanium Nitride Nanoparticles: Properties And Applications, Urcan Guler, Sergey Suslov, Alexander V. Kildishev, Alexandra Boltasseva, Vladimir M. Shalaev

U. Guler

Optical properties of colloidal plasmonic titanium nitride nanoparticles are examined with an eye on their photothermal and photocatalytic applications via transmission electron microscopy and optical transmittance measurements. Single crystal titanium nitride cubic nanoparticles with an average size of 50 nm, which was found to be the optimum size for cellular uptake with gold nanoparticles [1], exhibit plasmon resonance in the biological transparency window and demonstrate a high absorption efficiency. A self-passivating native oxide at the surface of the nanoparticles provides an additional degree of freedom for surface functionalization. The titanium oxide shell surrounding the plasmonic core can create new opportunities …
