Safely and capacity fade are the key issues that restrict the use of the lithium-ion battery for many applications. These issues are being tackled in a variety of ways. This dissertation focuses on using detailed continuum-level electrochemical models to study transport, kinetics, and mechanical processes in the lithium-ion batteries. These models can be used to quantify the effect of capacity fade mechanisms (side reactions and mechanical degradation) and improve the safety aspects of the lithium ion batteries. Three capacity-fade mechanisms—solid electrolyte interface side reaction, lithium-plating side reaction and mechanical degradation due to intercalation-induced stresses—are considered in the dissertation. In networked control systems (NCS), wherein a communication network is used to close the feedback loop, the transmission of feedback signals and execution of the controller is currently carried out at periodic sampling instants. Thus, this scheme requires a significant computational power and network bandwidth. In contrast, the event-based aperiodic sampling and control, which is introduced recently, appears to relieve the computational burden and high network resource utilization. Therefore, in this dissertation, a suite of novel event sampled adaptive regulation schemes in both discrete and continuous time domain for uncertain linear and nonlinear systems are designed.

"The study presents optimization based control design techniques for the systems that are governed by partial differential equations. A control technique is developed for systems that are actuated at the boundary. The principles of dynamic inversion and constrained optimization theory are used to formulate a feedback controller. This control technique is demonstrated for heat equations and thermal convection loops. This technique is extended to address a practical issue of parameter uncertainty in a class of systems. An estimator is defined for unknown parameters in the system. The Lyapunov stability theory is used to derive an update law of these parameters. …
