A Flexible Computer-Controlled Experimental Power Source For Welding Research, Dominic Cuiuri, John Norrish, Christopher Cook

Dominic Cuiuri

Control of the Gas Metal Arc welding process is becoming increasingly sophisticated, due to improvements in technology and a better understanding of the process itself. To effectively conduct research in this area, it is necessary to have equipment that is extremely flexible in both architecture and operation. Experimental power sources and a welding test facility have been developed at the University of Wollongong which meet these criteria. The core time-critical control functions are performed by an independent digital signal processor (DSP). Non time-critical functions such as data storage and operator interface are performed by a desktop personal computer. Both computing …

The effect of long term exposure of full size bolts to corrosive environments is presented. A special test rig was used to test four bolts under different loading conditions. Four X-grade identical profile bolts, each 21·7 mm core diameter (23·7 mm full diameter) were subjected to prolonged corrosion testing using acid sulphate water. The pH value of the circulated water varied between 3·4 and 4·3. The corrosion exposure test period lasted 3·5 years. Two bolts were axially loaded to 10 t and 20 t force respectively, the third bolt was subjected to a 360 Nm torsion load and the fourth …

Experimental Validation Data For Cfd Of Steady And Transient Mixed Convection On A Vertical Flat Plate, Blake W. Lance

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In this computer age, simulations are becoming common in science and engineering. One category of simulation, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), begins with physical equations but adds approximations and calibrations in order to complete solutions. Translating these equations into computer languages may cause unintended errors. If simulation results are to be used for decision making, their accuracy needs to be assessed. This accuracy assessment is the theory behind the field of Verification & Validation.

Verification involves confirming the translation of physical equations to computer language was per- formed correctly. It also features methods to detect many types of code errors. Validation …

Multi-Row Film Cooling Boundary Layers, Greg Natsui Jan 2015

Multi-Row Film Cooling Boundary Layers, Greg Natsui

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

High fidelity measurements are necessary to validate existing and future turbulence models for the purpose of producing the next generation of more efficient gas turbines. The objective of the present study is to conduct several different measurements of multi-row film cooling arrays in order to better understand the physics involved with injection of coolant through multiple rows of discrete holes into a flat plate turbulent boundary layer. Adiabatic effectiveness distributions are measured for several multi-row film cooling geometries. The geometries are designed with two different hole spacings and two different hole types to yield four total geometries. One of the …

A Combined Experimental-Numerical Approach For Determining Mechanical Properties Of Aluminum Subjects To Nanoindentation, Mao Liu, Cheng Lu, A Kiet Tieu, Ching-Tun Peng, Charlie Kong

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM) model has been developed to investigate the mechanical properties and micro-texture evolution of single-crystal aluminum induced by a sharp Berkovich indenter. The load-displacement curves, pile-up patterns and lattice rotation angles from simulation are consistent with the experimental results. The pile-up phenomenon and lattice rotation have been discussed based on the theory of crystal plasticity. In addition, a polycrystal tensile CPFEM model has been established to explore the relationship between indentation hardness and yield stress. The elastic constraint factor C is slightly larger than conventional value 3 due to the strain hardening.

Experimental And Numerical Study Of Micro Deep Drawing, Liang Luo, Zhengyi Jiang, Dongbin Wei, Kenichi Manabe, Hideki Sato

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Micro forming is a key technology for an industrial miniaturisation trend, and micro deep drawing (MDD) is a typical micro forming method. It has great advantages comparing to other micro manufacturing methods, such as net forming ability, mass production potential, high product quality and complex 3D metal products fabrication capacity. Meanwhile, it is facing difficulties, for example the so-called size effects, once scaled down to micro scale. To investigate and to solve the problems in MDD, a combined micro blanking-drawing machine is employed and an explicit-implicit micro deep drawing model with a voronoi blank model is developed. Through heat treatment …

Novel Experimental Setup For Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry Ion Detection In Collisions Of Anionic Species With Neutral Gas-Phase Molecular Targets, J C. Oller, L Ellis-Gibbings, F Ferreira Da Silva, Paulo Limao-Vieira, Gustavo Garcia

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We report a novel experimental setup for studying collision induced products resulting from the interaction of anionic beams with a neutral gas-phase molecular target. The precursor projectile was admitted into vacuum through a commercial pulsed valve, with the anionic beam produced in a hollow cathode discharge-induced plasma, and guided to the interaction region by a set of deflecting plates where it was made to interact with the target beam. Depending on the collision energy regime, negative and positive species can be formed in the collision region and ions were time-of-flight (TOF) mass-analysed. Here, we present data on O-2 precursor projectile, …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Micro deep drawing is a promising technology for mass production of complex 3D micro metal products. Significant size effects at a micro scale, however, obstruct application of this technology and block utilisation of traditional finite element method (FEM). Therefore, a micro tensile test system was developed to obtain accurate material properties considering size effects. Subsequently, a Voronoi blank model was developed for the micro scale simulation. Moreover, micro deep drawing experiments were conducted and their results were compared with the simulation results. The simulation results have a good agreement with the experimental data. Furthermore, the wrinkling at the cup mouth …
