Effect Of Graphitic Carbon Nanomodifiers On The Electromagnetic Shielding Effectiveness Of Linear Low Density Polyethylene Nanocomposites, Byron Villacorta Hernandez

All Dissertations

Conductive polymer composites have become alternative materials for providing electromagnetic and electrostatic shielding where metals are not suitable. In this study, the effect of crystallinity, morphology, concentration and orientation of carbon nanomodifiers on shielding provided by their polyethylene-based composites has been investigated relative to their transport properties.

First, the electrical properties and EM SE of composites consisting of heat-treated carbon nanofibers (Pyrograf® -III PR-19 CNF) in a linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) matrix were assessed. Heat treatment (HT) of CNF at 2500°C significantly improved their graphitic crystallinity and intrinsic transport properties, thereby increasing the EM SE of the nanocomposites. …

Phonon Transport Analysis Of Semiconductor Nanocomposites Using Monte Carlo Simulations, Mayank Malladi

All Theses

Nanocomposites are composite materials which incorporate nanosized particles, platelets or fibers. The addition of nanosized phases into the bulk matrix can lead to significantly different material properties compared to their macrocomposite counterparts. For nanocomposites, thermal conductivity is one of the most important physical properties. Manipulation and control of thermal conductivity in nanocomposites have impacted a variety of applications. In particular, it has been shown that the phonon thermal conductivity can be reduced significantly in nanocomposites due to the increase in phonon interface scattering while the electrical conductivity can be maintained. This extraordinary property of nanocomposites has been used to enhance …

Enhanced Optical, Visible Light Catalytic And Electrochemical Properties Of Au@Tio2 Nanocomposites, Mohammad Mansoob Khan Dr, Sajid A. Ansari

Dr. Mohammad Mansoob Khan

Au@TiO2 nanocomposites and pure TiO2 were successfully used to know the effect of Au on TiO2 and their comparative optical, visible light catalytic andelectrochemical activities were investigated. Optical parameters such as band gap energy (Eg = 2.4 eV), absorption coefficient (a), refractive index (n) and dielectric constants (s) have been determined using different methods. Visible light (590 nm) catalytic activity of Au@TiO2 nanocomposites was performed for reducing methyl orange (MO) under visible light irradiation. CV, EIS and DPV studies demonstrate that Au@TiO2 nanocomposites exhibit redox behavior, charged its surface by accumulating electrons, store and release the electrons.

Recent Developments In Magneto-Optic Garnet-Type Thin-Film Materials Synthesis, Mohammad Nur E Alam, Mikhail Vasiliev, Viacheslav Kotov, Kamal Alameh

Research outputs 2013

Magneto-optic (MO) garnets are used in a range of applications in nanophotonics, integrated optics, communications and imaging. Bi-substituted iron garnets of different compositions are the most useful class of materials in applied magneto- optics due to their excellent MO properties (large Faraday effect) and record-high MO figure of merit among all semi- transparent dielectrics. It is highly desirable to synthesise garnets which possess simultaneously a high MO figure of merit and large uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. However, the simultaneous optimization of several material properties and parameters can be difficult in single-layer garnet thin films, and it is also challenging to prepare …

Three-Dimensional Evolution Of Mechanical Percolation In Nanocomposites With Random Microstructures, Bethany Suzanne Fralick Jan 2013

Three-Dimensional Evolution Of Mechanical Percolation In Nanocomposites With Random Microstructures, Bethany Suzanne Fralick

Theses and Dissertations

One mechanism that is expected to play a large role in the enhanced, and sometimes novel, mechanical properties of nanocomposites is the probabilistic formation of percolated or connected microstructures. The majority of the models used to describe mechanical percolation have the functional form of a power law and depend on prior knowledge of a percolation threshold or critical volume fraction. While these models have been fairly accurate predictors of electrical conductivity in composites, they do not take any microstructural mechanisms, other than connectivity, into consideration. Classic mean-field micromechanics models, however, do not capture the variability in effective properties due to …
