Synthesis And Characterization Of One- And Two-Dimensional Novel Nanomaterials, Yu Zhong Dec 2011

Synthesis And Characterization Of One- And Two-Dimensional Novel Nanomaterials, Yu Zhong

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Nanomaterials have attracted extensive interest due to their unique structure and excellent properties compared with their bulk counterparts. To obtain nanodevices with controlled properties, it is prerequisite to synthesize nanostructured materials with designed architecture.

In this work, low (one- and two-) dimensional nanomaterials with controlled structures have been synthesized and characterized based on chemical vapour deposition strategy. Our research targets cover one-dimensinoal hollow, solid, and solid @ hollow heterostructural nanomaterials including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs), SnO2 nanowires, Mo doped-SnO2 nanowires, Sn nanowires encapsulated in CNTs (Sn@CNTs), and two-dimensional Mo2S3 nanopetals. Effect Of The Carbon Nanotube Surface Characteristics On The Conductivity And Dielectric Constant Of Carbon Nanotube/Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride) Composites, S A. Carabineiro, Manuel F. Pereira, J Nunes-Pereira, Cristina Caparrós, Vitor Sencadas, Senentxu Lanceros-Méndez

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Commercial multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) were functionalized by oxidation with HNO3, to introduce oxygen-containing surface groups, and by thermal treatments at different temperatures for their selective removal. The obtained samples were characterized by adsorption of N2 at -196°C, temperature-programmed desorption and determination of pH at the point of zero charge. CNT/poly(vinylidene fluoride) composites were prepared using the above CNT samples, with different filler fractions up to 1 wt%. It was found that oxidation reduced composite conductivity for a given concentration, shifted the percolation threshold to higher concentrations, and had no significant effect in the dielectric response.

Synthesis, Processing And Characterization Of Silicon-Based Templated Nanowires, Jae Ho Lee Jan 2011

Synthesis, Processing And Characterization Of Silicon-Based Templated Nanowires, Jae Ho Lee

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Semiconductor and metallic nanowires have attracted substantial attention due to their wide variety of applications, ranging from nanoelectronics to energy storage devices. In particular, self-assembled silicon nanowires (SiNWs) may be an attractive alternative to conventionally processed planar silicon since SiNWs can potentially function as both the switch (i.e. transistor) and local interconnect (e.g. metal silicide nanowire) to form an inherently integrated nanoelectronic system. Also, hierarchical (branched) nanowire systems hold potential for catalysts or porous electrode applications for energy applications

Show Us Your (Carbon Nanotube Artificial) Muscles!, Geoffrey M. Spinks

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The idea of doctors deploying miniscule robots in your body to diagnose and treat medical conditions is closer to reality today with the development of artificial muscles small and strong enough to push such tiny "nano-bots" along.

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We report the synthesis of self-organized titania nanotubes and nanocrystalline titania powders employing an alternative and novel approach. Integrating these nanostructures in a binder-free working electrode improved the capacitance up to 911 uF cm-2, which is around one to two orders of magnitude higher than the conventional electric double layer capacitors.

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We reported the realization of assembling compact-designed supercapacitors using large-scaled freestanding and flexible single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) films as both anode and cathode. A prototype of the processing procedures was developed to obtain the uniform spreading of the SWCNT films onto the separators serving as both electrodes and charge collectors without metallic current collectors, leading to a simplified and lightweight architecture. The area of SWCNT film on a separator can be scaled up and its thickness can be extended. High energy and power densities (43.7 Wh kg-1 and 197.3 kW kg-1, respectively) were achieved from the prepared …
