By employing a precise method for locating and directlyimaging the active switching region in a resistive random access memory (RRAM) device, a nanoscale conducting channel consisting of an amorphous Ta(O) solid solution surrounded by nearly stoichiometric Ta2O5 is observed. Structural and chemical analysis of the channel combined with temperature-dependent transport measurements indicate a unique resistance switching mechanism.

Clock generation and distribution are getting difficult due to increased die size and increased number of cores in a microprocessor. Clock frequencies of microprocessors have been increased and expected to trend 4GHz in near future. Electronic band structure of various crystal orientations of relaxed and strained bulk, 1D and 2D confined semiconductors are investigated using nonlocal empirical pseudopotential method with spin-orbit interaction. For the bulk semiconductors, local and nonlocal pseudopotential parameters are obtained by fitting transport-relevant quantities, such as band gap, effective masses and deformation potentials, to available experimental data. Recently a number of communications schemes have been proposed for Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs). One of these, the Universal Geocast Scheme (UGS) proposed by Hossein Pishro-Nik and Mohammad Nekoui, provides for a diverse variety of VANET-specific characteristics such as time-varying topology, protocol variation based on road congestion, and support for non line-of-sight communication. In this research, the UGS protocol is extended to consider inter-vehicle multi-hop connections in intersections with surrounding obstructions along with single-hop communications in an open road scenario. For optical propagation through the turbulent atmosphere, the angle of arrival (AOA) cross-correlation function obtained from two spatially separated light sources carries information regarding the transverse wind velocity averaged along the propagation path. Two methods for the retrieval of the beam transverse horizontal wind velocity, v_t, based on the estimation of the time delay to the peak and the slope at zero lag of the AOA cross-correlation function, are presented. An area of interest is the relationship between the observed backscattered power received by a surface-based marine radar and the ocean surface topography. This thesis describes an efficient method for speeding up functional verification of arithmetic circuits namely linear network such as wallace trees, counters using linear algebra techniques. The circuit is represented as a network of half adders, full adders and inverters, and modeled as a system of linear equations. The proof of functional correctness of the design is obtained by computing its algebraic signature using standard linear programming (LP) solver and comparing it with the reference signature provided by the designer. This thesis consists of two research projects on wireless communication systems. In the first project, we propose a fast inphase and quadrature (I/Q) imbalance compensation technique for the analog quadrature modulators in direct conversion transmitters. The method needs no training sequence, no extra background data gathering process and no prior perfect knowledge of the envelope detector characteristics. In contrast to previous approaches, it uses points from both the linear and predictable nonlinear regions of the envelope detector to hasten convergence. We provide a least mean square (LMS) version and demonstrate that the quadrature modulator compensator converges.

This thesis implements an automated system that counts pedestrians with 85% accuracy. Two approaches have been considered and evaluated in terms of count accuracy, cost and ease of deployment. The first approach employs the Autoscope Solo Terra, a traffic camera which is widely used to monitor vehicular traffic. The Solo Terra supports an image processing-based detector that counts the number of objects crossing user-defined areas in the captured image. This thesis describes the design and measurement of an X-band IQ up/down converter that has been fabricated on a 180nm RF CMOS process. This converter includes components for mixing, frequency doubling, quadrature generation, amplification, and limiting. The specific circuit topologies used include passive double-balanced mixers, RC polyphase filters, and injection locked LC oscillators.

The 3D integration of dies promises to address the problem of increased die size caused by the slowing of scaling. By partitioning a design among two or more dies and stacking them vertically, the average interconnect length is greatly decreased and thus power is reduced. Also, since smaller dies will have a higher yield, 3D integration will reduce manufacturing costs. A transmission-line metamaterial design of a material-embedded electric line source radiating inside a ground recess is investigated. The media embedding the recessed line source are designed such that the embedded current creates the same radiation pattern as a line source over a flat conducting ground plane.
