Wet pavement friction is known to be one of the most important roadway safety parameters. In this research, frictional properties of flexible (asphalt) pavements were investigated.

As a part of this study, a laboratory device to polish asphalt specimens was refined and a procedure to evaluate mixture frictional properties was proposed. Following this procedure, 46 different Superpave mixtures, one stone matrix asphalt (SMA) mixture and one porous friction course (PFC) mixture were tested. In addition, 23 different asphalt and two concrete field sections were also tested for friction and noise.

In 2003, the Indiana Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration allowed a test section of Porous Friction Course (PFC) to be placed on I74 east of Indianapolis. The design, construction and early performance of that surface were compared to an adjacent SMA surface and a conventional Superpave HMA surface in a report prepared for the Institute for Safe, Quiet and Durable Highways (1). The early performance indicated that the PFC offered several advantages over the SMA and the conventional surfaces, including reduced tire/pavement noise, high friction and surface texture, and reduced splash and spray. The objective of this project is to find which type of coating has the best performance characteristics for finishing firearms. This is accomplished by measuring and comparing several performance characteristics, such as: adhesion, hardness, wear resistance, friction control, and corrosion resistance. Appearance is not a factor since any exterior coating that is flashy can be subdued or camouflaged with special purpose paints, which have proven durable enough for such purposes. The Point Collocation Non-Intrusive Polynomial Chaos (NIPC) method has been applied to two stochastic synthetic jet actuator problems used as test cases in the CFDVAL2004 workshop to demonstrate the integration of computationally efficient uncertainty quantification to the high-fidelity CFD modeling of synthetic jet actuators. In Case1 where the synthetic jet is issued into quiescent air, the NIPC method is used to quantify the uncertainty in the long-time averaged u and v-velocities at several locations in the flow field, due to the uniformly distributed uncertainty introduced in the amplitude and frequency of the oscillation of the piezo-electric membrane. The development of the research presented here is one in which high velocity relative sliding motion between two bodies in contact has been considered. The experimental results of a VascoMax 300 maraging steel slipper sliding on an AISI 1080 steel rail during a January 2008 sled test mission were considered for the determination of high velocity wear rates. The numerical model, based on a metallographic study of a test slipper, contained all of the physical features present in order to adequately characterize high velocity wear rates. The tribological performance of biodiesel is crucial for its application in automobiles. In the present study, effect of temperature on the tribological performance of palm biodiesel was investigated by using four ball wear machine. It has long been recognized that the angular deflection of an atomic force microscope(AFM) cantilever under “normal” loading conditions can be profoundly influenced by the friction between the tip and the surface. It is shown here that a remarkably quantifiable hysteresis occurs in the slope of loading curves whenever the normal flexural stiffness of the AFM cantilever is greater than that of the sample. This situation arises naturally in cantilever-on-cantilever calibration, but also when trying to measure the stiffness of nanomechanical devices or test structures, or when probing any type of surface or structure that is much more compliant along …

The interaction of a granular material with boundary materials is one of the most important factors to consider when designing mass flow hoppers, chutes, feeders and other equipment where flow is expected to occur. Numerous properties of a bulk material and wall surface influence the measurement of wall friction angles (e.g. particle size and distribution, particle shape, particle and boundary asperities and moisture content) which can be difficult to thoroughly investigate on a standard Jenike direct shear tester. For replication processes to be deemed successful it must be possible to remove the replicated parts from the tool after processing. With decreasing part and feature size the challenge of demoulding replicated parts increases since the resulting parts and replication tooling used are more delicate and can be easily damaged. Predictive demoulding force models can be used to optimise the part, tool and process parameters to maximise the likelihood of success. Surface texturing is a method that modifies the frictional surface of a nominally flat tribocomponent by shallow patterns. It is found that with added patterns to the surface of a mechanical face seal or thrust bearing, their tribological performance improves, i.e. both friction and wear rate decrease. The current research concentrates on the analysis of hydrodynamic effect responsible for the performance enhancement of the spiral groove patterns and dimples on mechanical seal-like structures and the experimental evaluation of the tribological behavior of these structures.
