Compression After Impact Load Prediction In Graphite/Epoxy Laminates Using Acoustic Emission And Artificial Neural Networks, Anthony Michael Gunasekera

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this research was to investigate the effectiveness of artificial neural networks (ANNs) in predicting the compression after impact (CAI) load of graphite/epoxy laminates from acoustic emission (AE) nondestructive testing (NDT) data. Thirty-four 24-ply bidirectional woven cloth laminate coupons were constructed and impacted at various energy levels ranging from 8 to 20 Joules, generating barely visible impact damage (BVID). Acoustic emission data were acquired as the coupons were compressed to failure. Not having been analyzed by previous experimenters, several noise tests were also performed to determine the impact of external noise on acoustic emission data during testing. Once …

User-Driven Lossy Compression For Images And Video, Nathan Brewer, Nianjun Liu, Li Cheng, Lei Wang Jan 2009

User-Driven Lossy Compression For Images And Video, Nathan Brewer, Nianjun Liu, Li Cheng, Lei Wang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In any given scene, a human observer is typically more interested in some objects than others, and will pay more attention to those objects they are interested in. This paper aims to capture this attention focusing behavior by selectively merging a fine-scale oversegmentation of a frame so that interesting regions are segmented into smaller regions than uninteresting regions. This results in a new type of image partitioning which reflects in the image the amount of attention we pay to a particular image region. This is done using a novel, interactive method for learning merging rules for images and videos based …

Axial Compression Tests On Frp-Jacketed Circular Concrete-Filled Thin Steel Tubes, Y M. Hu, T Yu, J G. Teng

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) jackets have been widely used to confine concrete columns to enhance their load-carrying capacity and ductility. More recently, the use of FRP jackets to improve the performance of hollow steel tubes and concrete-filled steel tubes has also been explored. This paper presents the results of a recent experimental study in which the behaviour of FRP-confined circular concrete-filled thin steel tubes under axial compression was examined. The experimental study included three series of tests and was focussed on the effects of the diameter-to-thickness ratio of the steel tube and the confinement stiffness of the FRP jacket. The test …
