Modeling Edge Effects Of Mesa Diodes For Silicon Photovoltaics, Jesse S. Appel Aug 2008

Modeling Edge Effects Of Mesa Diodes For Silicon Photovoltaics, Jesse S. Appel

Dissertations

A mesa diode has been modeled and its performance under dark and illuminated conditions has been simulated using a commercial finite element software package. These simulations have led to a determination of the self-consistent solution to the continuity equations for electrons and holes using the steady-state drift-diffusion model for carrier dynamics coupled with electric potential determined from Poisson's equation. The purpose of these simulations has been to determine the influence of edge conditions on the overall performance of mesa diodes under dark and illuminated conditions.

Mesa diode arrays are fabricated on crystalline silicon solar cells. They are an array of …

Solar 2007: Renewable Energy Disaster Relief Fund Gives A Helping Hand, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young Apr 2008

Solar 2007: Renewable Energy Disaster Relief Fund Gives A Helping Hand, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young

FSEC Energy Research Center®

In a disaster, support and utility services are damaged or destroyed leaving people without electricity, water, sanitation, and communication. Thousands of people from emergency management agencies and volunteer organizations are deployed to help after a disaster to provide life support and basic services. In this response effort, energy resources and services are lacking, making recovery efforts difficult in our high-tech world. In response to this problem, the National Energy Foundation and the Florida Solar Energy Center have formed the Renewable Energy Disaster Relief Fund (REDRF).

REDRF will collect donations from the general public, businesses, and various organizations through a variety …

Ahata Solar Energy Resort Training Program, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young Apr 2008

Ahata Solar Energy Resort Training Program, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young

FSEC Energy Research Center®

The Florida Solar Energy Center/University of Central Florida developed a Solar Energy Resort Training Program at the request of Aruba Bucuti Beach Resort Association, Aruba (AHATA) in the Caribbean Islands. The Aruba Resort Association has been interested in learning about and applying renewable energy technologies to their resorts to reduce energy consumption and cost. This report describes the activities and implementation of Florida Solar Energy Center's support to the Association to assist in the consulting, education and implementation of solar energy technologies into the resort industry in the country.

Pv Training Laboratory Design Manual, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young Mar 2008

Pv Training Laboratory Design Manual, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young

FSEC Energy Research Center®

This document serves as a written summary of some of the elements required for the design, specification, construction and operation of a successful laboratory for the training of photovoltaics systems. This document only discusses the equipment requirements for such a lab. A successful training lab for education and certification also requires qualified and trained personnel; in-service training to maintain competency; procedures and protocols for curriculum, evaluation, and reporting; careful adherence to the relevant Standards; protocols for quality assurance and calibration; detailed documentation of all procedures and protocols. Accreditation of the lab by and independent evaluating agency is also useful in …

Effect Of Composition, Morphology And Semiconducting Properties On The Efficiency Of Cuin1-Xgaxse2-Ysy Thin-Film Solar Cells Pre, Sachin Kulkarni Jan 2008

Effect Of Composition, Morphology And Semiconducting Properties On The Efficiency Of Cuin1-Xgaxse2-Ysy Thin-Film Solar Cells Pre, Sachin Kulkarni

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A rapid thermal processing (RTP) reactor for the preparation of graded CuIn1-xGaxSe2-ySy (CIGSeS) thin-film solar cells has been designed, assembled and is being used at the Photovoltaic Materials Laboratory of the Florida Solar Energy Center. CIGSeS films having the optimum composition, morphology, and semiconducting properties were prepared using RTP. Initially films having various Cu/(In+Ga) ratios were prepared. In the next step selenium incorporation in these films was optimized, followed by sulfur incorporation in the surface to increase the bandgap at the surface. The compositional gradient of sulfur was fine-tuned so as to increase the conversion efficiency. Materials properties of these …

Structure Property Relationships In Electron Donating Systems For Potential Photovoltaic Applications., Jonathan Moghal Jan 2008

Structure Property Relationships In Electron Donating Systems For Potential Photovoltaic Applications., Jonathan Moghal

Doctoral

Conjugated polymers are considered to be one-dimensional semiconductors. In conjugated polymers single and double bonds alternatively bond the carbon atoms along the polymer chain. The loosely bound electrons determine the electronic properties of conjugated polymers. In order to utilise the properties of conjugated polymers in terms of a photovoltaic (PV) device application an acceptor material must be added. The acceptor material used in this study is used in buckminsterfullerence (C60). C60 was selected for this purpose due to its size and the fact that it can accept up to six additional electrons. Ultrafast charge transfers from a conducting polymer onto …

Deploying Mobile Pv Emergency Power System In A Disaster, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young Jan 2008

Deploying Mobile Pv Emergency Power System In A Disaster, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young

Disasters can be as destructive as Hurricane Katrina, leaving several hundred-thousand people homeless, or as minor as an afternoon thunderstorm that brings down local power lines to your home. After a disaster, utility services may be damaged or destroyed, leaving people without water, sanitation, communication and electricity. In response to a disaster, first responders are deployed with life supporting resources, such as water, food, and medical supplies. Energy resources are often lacking, making recovery efforts difficult in our high-tech world of cell phones, television, computers, refrigerators and many other electronic devices.

After a disaster, the long time tradition used to …
