Metrology And Proportion In The Ecclesiastical Architecture Of Medieval Ireland, Avril Behan, Rachel Moss
Metrology And Proportion In The Ecclesiastical Architecture Of Medieval Ireland, Avril Behan, Rachel Moss
Conference Papers
The aim of this paper is to examine the extent to which detailed empirical analysis of the metrology and proportional systems used in the design of Irish ecclesiastical architecture can be analysed to provide historical information not otherwise available. Focussing on a relatively limited sample of window tracery designs as a case study, it will first set out to establish what, if any, systems were in use, and then what light these might shed on the background, training and work practices of the masons, and, by association, the patrons responsible for employing them.

Barriers To Rfid Adoption In The Supply Chain, Nick Huber, Katina Michael, Luke Mccathie
Barriers To Rfid Adoption In The Supply Chain, Nick Huber, Katina Michael, Luke Mccathie
Professor Katina Michael
This paper explores the current barriers to adoption of radio-frequency identification (RFID) for supply chain applications, and documents the perceptions of key players in the Australian RFID market. The paper contains data collected from interviews of both technology providers (e.g. RFID vendors), and prospective business customer (i.e. a large retailer). Data collected is analyzed using qualitative content analysis, and supported with figures and tables. The findings show that the three main barriers to RFID adoption are: the cost of RFID implementation (especially ongoing tag costs), lack of customer awareness and education, and a technology which is only at the beginning …
Vendor Perceptions Of How Rfid Can Minimize Product Shrinkage In The Retail Supply Chain, N. Huber, Katina Michael
Vendor Perceptions Of How Rfid Can Minimize Product Shrinkage In The Retail Supply Chain, N. Huber, Katina Michael
Professor Katina Michael
The objective of this paper is to investigate product shrinkage in the retail supply chain, and to consider how radio frequency identification (RFID) could act as a partial solution toward a retailer’s loss prevention strategy. The research uses semi-structured interviews to collect data, and a qualitative content analysis to present the results. Given that the number of RFID deployments in the retail supply chain is limited, RFID vendors, resellers, and associations are instead used to gather the current value propositions. Representatives from nine Australian RFID vendors and associations were interviewed in August and September of 2006. The results indicate that …

Automatic Generation Of Plc Code Based On Net Condition Event Systems, Natalia Sandberg
Automatic Generation Of Plc Code Based On Net Condition Event Systems, Natalia Sandberg
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
An important consideration in discrete event dynamic systems control theory is the selection of a suitable modeling formalism that can capture the complex characteristics of the system and the capability to automatically synthesize a controller based on the system model. Net condition event systems are well suited for modeling complex discrete event dynamic systems owing to their input and output structure, which effectively captures the behavior of the physical devices to be monitored and/or controlled. To date, net condition event systems control models have not been extensively applied to highly automated manufacturing systems and there are few guidelines on how …

Postage Stamps. Metallurgy, Art, History, Fathi Habashi
Fathi Habashi
Postage stamps are important means of communication and many countries have recorded important events, honored worthy individuals, and described interesting facts through this medium. Many historical facts, sometimes obscure, can be found on stamps. Stamps have artistic value, they are created by artists. The present 125-page book is a facsimile edition of 20 articles published by the author in different technical journals; fully illustrated in color. They cover the history of metallurgy, industrial minerals, history of mining, and selected topics such as refractories, metal casting, welding, and mining equipment.

Dispelling The Myths Of Machine Translation, Uwe Muegge

It is not surprising that myths, half-truths, and misunderstandings abound regarding machine translation: It seems as if the experience most players in the translation field have with this technology does not go beyond toying a little with one of the free online translation tools. Almost every week, I come across an article informing its readers either that machine translation is and always will be a complete waste of time or that machine translation, while being a waste of time today, might actually be useful some time in the distant future. In the hope of setting the record straight, here is …

On Providing Engineering Students With Ministry And Culturally-Appropriate Design Experiences In Developing Countries, Lawrence D. Zavodney, Thomas J. Thompson, Ray Hutchison
Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
Academic institutions are encouraged to instill "the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context." This paper summarizes the structural, planning, and logistical aspects of offering senior-level capstone and underclass extra-curricular design projects targeted for developing countries. These projects engage the students in year-long design and fabrication, and culminate in taking students to foreign soil for delivery and installation. The necessary infrastructure and culture at the academic institution, relationships with appropriate intermediaries, and the role of a receptive national host that needs engineering services are identified. The goal is to continue an on-going collaborative relationship that takes students …

Literature And Performance Of Music For Double Bass And Tape, Jeremy C. Baguyos
Literature And Performance Of Music For Double Bass And Tape, Jeremy C. Baguyos
Music Faculty Publications
Electroacoustic music for double bass can be classified into the following two types of repertoire: real-time/interactive computer music or tape music. Real-time/interactive computer music is the newer of the two types and involves the algorithmic generation of electronic sounds in live performance. Pre-recorded electronic sounds are usually avoided, and instead, the sound of live input is used as the source material for electronic sounds. A computer is used for capture, processing and synthesis, and the software is usually written in the MAX/MSP environment. The second category, tape music, is the older of the two types of electroacoustic music for the …

Women And Technology: Reversing The Trends Of Attrition And Obtaining A Balance, Gondy Leroy, Kristin M. Tolle, Linda Perkins
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
Many reports and technical news bulletins presented by organizations such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) highlight that few female and minority college students are choosing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields of study or careers. For those who choose STEM fields, attrition both during education and in the workplace is pervasive. NSF reports in its 2006 Science Indicators that women account for only 27% of the bachelor’s degrees in computer sciences. And although the …
