A Synthesis Of Modern Rail Transportation Engineering Practices, Donald D. Cook Sep 1977

A Synthesis Of Modern Rail Transportation Engineering Practices, Donald D. Cook

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

The 1970’s will go down in history as the decade in which the University of Nebraska – Civil Engineering Department expanded its academic interest to include the field of transportation. Railroad transportation and activities related to the instruction of planning, design and operation of railroads become a most important part of the transportation curriculum when viewed in the above context. Unfortunately, no modern comprehensive textbook exists for use in a rail transportation course.

The intent of this thesis is to provide a comprehensive source of data for use in the course of study in Railroad Transportation being developed by the …

Missouri River Computerized Data Bank, Glendon Taylor Stevens Jun 1977

Missouri River Computerized Data Bank, Glendon Taylor Stevens

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This report explains the results of "The Missouri River Computerized Data Bank." It contains all known data collected on the Missouri River beginning in the mid-1930's.

It should be noted that only 10% of the included data has been verified, i.e. has been checked against the source document. A bounds check was performed by the computer on each piece of data for upper and lower limits established for each type of data. Any potential user of these data should be aware of this fact and that, on the average, 1 piece of data out of 200 may be in error. …

Nonlinear Buckling Of Deep Cylindrical Shell Panels With Imperfections, Madhusudan H. Jhaveri May 1977

Nonlinear Buckling Of Deep Cylindrical Shell Panels With Imperfections, Madhusudan H. Jhaveri

Dissertations

The work presented in this dissertation is devoted to the analysis of nonlinear buckling of thin cylindrical shells with imperfections. The nonlinearity of the problem treated in this dissertation is that associated with large displacements in the linear elastic range. The method used is not restricted by the magnitude of the displacements provided that the strains do not exceed the limit of proportionality.

Thus, based upon the large deflection theory, cylindrical shell panel is investigated for buckling under the action of uniform external pressure. Certain higher order infinitesimal terms which are usually neglected in the shallow shell theories, have been …

The Anisotropic And Isotropic Strength Behavior Of An Illitic Clay, Miles M. O'Brien May 1977

The Anisotropic And Isotropic Strength Behavior Of An Illitic Clay, Miles M. O'Brien

Theses

The cause and the nature of anisotropy in a cohesive soil was investigated by direct shear and triaxial compression tests. Laboratory techniques and procedures used to prepare isotropic clay samples are given where consolidation was accomplished under hydrostatic pressure. Direct shear tests were performed on these specimens trimmed at different inclinations to the physical horizontal from the block samples. The ratio of undrained shear strengths in any direction to shear strength in the vertical direction was found to be equal to one, proving isotropy existed. Similar tests were performed on specimens trimmed from the same clay consolidated one-dimensionally. Results from …

The Effects Of Pressure On The Biodegradability Of Sanitary Sewage In A Model Activated Sludge Reactor, Nicholas A. Mezei Apr 1977

The Effects Of Pressure On The Biodegradability Of Sanitary Sewage In A Model Activated Sludge Reactor, Nicholas A. Mezei

Theses

Based on existing information concerning the effects of pressure on the biodegradability of sanitary sewage, a model activated sludge reactor was used in conjunction with pressurization to determine the viability of pressurization as a primary sewage treatment process.

Municipal sewage samples were pressurized at 40 psig for one hour with an excess of oxygen. An air compressor and a steel drum were used for sample pressurization. A non-pressurized control sample was maintained. After pressurization, the samples were fed into separate model activated sludge reactors. Biodegradability of both types of effluent was measured by determining their five day biochemical oxygen demands …

Fundamental Analysis Of The Linear Multiple Regression Technique For Quantification Of Water Quality Parameters From Remote Sensing Data, Charles Henry Whitlock Iii Apr 1977

Fundamental Analysis Of The Linear Multiple Regression Technique For Quantification Of Water Quality Parameters From Remote Sensing Data, Charles Henry Whitlock Iii

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Inconsistent results have been obtained from previous experiments which have applied linear multiple regression techniques to remote sensing data for quantification of water quality parameters. The objective of this investigation is to define optical physics and/or environmental conditions under which the linear multiple regression should be applicable. To achieve this objective, an investigation of the signal response equations is conducted and the concept is tested by application to both analytical test cases and actual remote sensing data from a laboratory under controlled conditions.

Investigation of the signed response equations shows that the exact solution for a number of optical physics …

Thermal Response Of A Composite Bridge Structure, David John Wisch Jan 1977

Thermal Response Of A Composite Bridge Structure, David John Wisch

Masters Theses

"This experimental investigation was conducted as an intermediate study to verify and substantiate a prior theoretical study for possible utilization toward development of rational bridge design criteria. The objectives of the study were to construct and instrument a 15 ft - 15 ft (4.6 m- 4.6 m) two-span, composite design, laboratory structure, to subject the structure to thermal loading, and to correlate the experimental temperature distributions, strain distributions, and deflections with those obtained from the theoretical study. Infrared heat lamps were used to obtain steady-state thermal loading.

Three theoretical cases were considered for strain calculations: a) both the slab and …

Removal Of Organic Chemical Contaminants By Granular Activated Carbon., Garry Reinhold Aronberg Jan 1977

Removal Of Organic Chemical Contaminants By Granular Activated Carbon., Garry Reinhold Aronberg

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of GAC* filtration in removing organic chemical contaminants from drinking water, and to determine whether the T.O. No. of the treated water could aid in the routine monitoring of the GAC filters.

Two pilot filters containing 18-in. (45.7-cm) deep GAC beds were installed at water treatment plants in Jefferson City and St. Louis County, MO; both plants treated Missouri River water. A bituminous coal-base (large surface area, small pore volume) and 2 lignite coal-base (small surface area, large pore volume) carbons were tested at 2 and 5 gpm/sq ft (81.4 …

Strength Of Cold-Formed Steel Beam Webs In Bending, Shear, And A Combination Of Bending And Shear, Roger A. Laboube Jan 1977

Strength Of Cold-Formed Steel Beam Webs In Bending, Shear, And A Combination Of Bending And Shear, Roger A. Laboube

Doctoral Dissertations

"An extensive experimental investigation has been conducted to study the load-carrying capacity of cold-formed steel web elements subjected to bending stress, shear stress, and a combination of bending and shear stresses. Emphasis has been concentrated on the instability and postbuckling strength of beam webs.

In the study of beam webs subjected only to bending, the postbuckling strength of web elements and the effect of the compression flange on the moment capacity have been carefully evaluated for beams having stiffened and unstiffened flanges. Based on 84 test results, formulas have been developed to predict the ultimate moment capacity of cold-formed steel …

Dynamic Pullout Resistance Of Anchors Buried In Dry Sand, Chris John Veesaert Jan 1977

Dynamic Pullout Resistance Of Anchors Buried In Dry Sand, Chris John Veesaert

Masters Theses

"The vertical pullout resistance of buried anchors subjected to dynamic loading was investigated by means of a laboratory model study. A dry uniformly graded sand, compacted by vibration to 92% of its relative density, was used as the test medium. Tests were performed in a 24-inch square tank using 3.0 and 5.0-inch diameter half and full-anchors. The anchors were tested at depths ranging from 5.0 to 21.0 inches.

It was assumed that the dynamic failure mechanism of earth anchors was the same as the static failure mode, and not distinct behavior. Thus static tests, i.e., tests using a constant strain …
