The Production And Characterization Of Chitosan Based Microgels Using A Novel Microfluidic Device To Promote Cell Survival, Kaileen Shevchuk

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The purpose of this project is to synthesize and characterize perfluorocarbon modified methacrylamide chitosan (MACF) microgels produced with the use of a capillary-based microfluidic device. Since cell survival and development is highly related to particles physical properties, analysis of microgels set out to determine the particle’s physical properties. I hypothesize that the viscosity of the MACF polymer as well as the amount of photo initiator influence the physical properties of synthesized particles and as a result can generate particles with various features for cell culture in terms of shape, size, charge and swelling abilities. This hypothesis was validated through the …

Probing The Nanoscale Interaction Forces And Elastic Properties Of Organic And Inorganic Materials Using Force-Distance (F-D) Spectroscopy, Abhilash Vincent Jan 2010

Probing The Nanoscale Interaction Forces And Elastic Properties Of Organic And Inorganic Materials Using Force-Distance (F-D) Spectroscopy, Abhilash Vincent

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Due to their therapeutic applications such as radical scavenging, MRI contrast imaging, Photoluminescence imaging, drug delivery, etc., nanoparticles (NPs) have a significant importance in bio-nanotechnology. The reason that prevents the utilizing NPs for drug delivery in medical field is mostly due to their biocompatibility issues (incompatibility can lead to toxicity and cell death). Changes in the surface conditions of NPs often lead to NP cytotoxicity. Investigating the role of NP surface properties (surface charges and surface chemistry) on their interactions with biomolecules (Cells, protein and DNA) could enhance the current understanding of NP cytotoxicity. Hence, it is highly beneficial to …

Effect Of Micro-Fabric On Consolidation Behavior Of Reconstituted Kaolin Clay, Alexander Page Davis-Smith Dec 2004

Effect Of Micro-Fabric On Consolidation Behavior Of Reconstituted Kaolin Clay, Alexander Page Davis-Smith

Masters Theses

The effect of micro-fabric (i.e. geometric arrangement of platelets) on the one-dimensional consolidation behavior of reconstituted kaolin clay is evaluated using a series of controlled-rate-of-strain (CRS) and incremental load (IL) consolidation tests. The causes and implications of changes in micro-fabric are also explored. Micro-fabric has been altered by adding a dispersing agent to the slurry during specimen preparation; and the changes in micro-fabric have been observed with scanning electron microscope (SEM) images and x-ray diffraction analysis. Properties of the pore fluid are found to affect micro-fabric, even in the presence of significant mechanical stresses. It is observed that the changes …

Streaming Potential Studies, Andrew L. Mular May 1956

Streaming Potential Studies, Andrew L. Mular

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The application of streaming potential to mineral-dressing is comparatively recent. Although colloidal chemists, for some time, have been familiar with streaming potential and the electrical double layer, A.M. Gaudin, Richards Professor of mineral-dressing, M.I.T, and D.W. Fuerstenau, his assistant, were the first to publish a series of experiments dealing directly with streaming potential applied to flotation. The apparatus described in this thesis was used by Fuerstenau and was developed by him especially for this type of investigation.
