More water utilities are adopting Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) to balance long-term water supply and demand. Due to large implementation and operation costs, ASR projects need to be optimized, particularly for energy use, which is a major operating expense. This study examines the relationships among energy use, recharge, and recovery at two ASR projects in the western United States. The major finding is an economy of scale for recovery processes, but not for gravity-fed recharge processes. The economy of scale found is as follows: the energy intensity recovered decreases with volume. This suggests it is more energy-efficient to recover …

As a significant source of emissions, public transportation presents an opportunity for mitigation through electrification. However, transitioning to an electric bus fleet necessitates substantial investments in bus procurement and charging infrastructure. To address the associated costs, this study introduces a mixed-integer linear mathematical model developed to optimize the location of on-route fast charging stations within bus networks. Existing viscosity prediction methods and relevant literature are reviewed. An exhaustive review of group contribution, corresponding states, and interpolative prediction methods finds that even the best of these models produces large prediction errors and often require significant experimental data. Molecular dynamics simulation techniques for viscosity prediction are evaluated and compared to one another to determine the best choice for this work. A thorough investigation finds that Equilibrium Molecular Dynamics (EMD) simulations are the best option for reproducible and reliable liquid viscosity predictions. Transformer neural networks have made a significant impact on natural language processing. The Transformer network self-attention mechanism effectively addresses the vanishing gradient problem that limits a network learning capability, especially when the time series gets longer or the size of the network gets deeper. This dissertation examines the usage of the Transformer model for time-series forecasting and customizes it for a simultaneous multistep-ahead prediction model in a surrogate model predictive control (MPC) application. This study proposes several decision-making tools utilizing optimization and machine learning frameworks to assess and improve the safety of the workplaces. The first chapter of this study presents a novel mathematical model to optimally locate a set of detectors to minimize the expected number of casualties in a given threat area. The problem is formulated as a nonlinear binary integer programming model and then solved as a linearized branch-and-bound algorithm. This thesis addresses the design difficulties encountered when designing deployable origami-based arrays. Specific considerations regarding thickness accommodation, deployment, and parameter modifications are discussed. Patterns such as the Miura-ori, flasher, and hexagon are investigated, with emphasis placed on pattern modification from zero-thickness to finite-thickness. Applying origami principles to form engineering solutions is a complicated task. Competing requirements may create confusion around which pattern is most favorable for the space array application. The coefficient of pressure distribution for various 2D airfoil geometries were found using source – vortex panel methods. The data obtained in these simulations was used in multiple machine learning models which would predict the airfoil geometry from a given coefficient of pressure distribution. The neural networks employed were fully connected feedforward networks with Levenberg – Marquardt backpropagation and one model employed Bayesian Regularization. A novel tool for optimizing airfoil shape for a given coefficient of pressure distribution was created which performed well during testing. Current efforts have identified both operational and restoration interdependency subtypes and coupling strategies that have not been integrated into one comprehensive model. In this thesis, the design and optimization process of a novel soft intelligent modular pad (IntelliPad) for the purpose of pressure injury prevention is presented. The structure of the IntelliPad consists of multiple individual multi-chamber soft pneumatic-driven actuators that use pressurized air and vacuum. Each actuator is able to provide both vertical and horizontal motions that can be controlled independently. The Air Force employs ejection seats in its high-performance aircraft. While these systems are intended to ensure aircrew safety, the ejection process subjects the aircrew to potentially injurious forces. System validation includes evaluation of forces against a standard which is linked to the probability of injury. The Muti-Axial Neck Injury Criteria (MANIC) was developed to account for forces in all six degrees of freedom. Military contingency bases require substantial resources and funding sustain and are often not connected to an infrastructure grid. Infrastructure assets produce the required outputs for sustainment, but are often expensive and inefficient, producing a significant logistical burden. With the increasing near-peer threats of opposing military forces, there is a need for more self-sufficient contingency bases with alternatives that reduce resources usage and the cost of sustainment. The purpose of this research is to investigate the structural efficiency of 8-node IsoTruss structures subject to uniaxial compression using numerical, dimensional, and optimization methods. The structures analyzed herein are based on graphite/epoxy specimens that were designed for light-weight space applications, and are approximately 10 ft. (3 m) long and 0.3 lb. (0.14 kg).
