A Hybrid Framework For Critical Infrastructures Interdependency Modeling, Simulation, And Analysis, David Corder Hinton
Masters Theses
"Flow system models, also known as flow network models, encompass vastly complex, ever-expanding problem sets which comprise the foundation for maintenance, operation, and improvement of critical infrastructures around the world. The stable operation of these vast critical infrastructures is fundamental to the continued advancement of modern society. These infrastructures are tightly interdependent and vulnerable to interruption by both natural circumstance and malicious targeting. This necessitates representation of such critical infrastructures and their multi-domain interdependencies in defense focused constructive and virtual simulation environments as a matter of national interest and security. By breadth exploration of the problem space, this work body …
The Effects Of Ecological Simulation For Ground Vehicle Mobility Forecasting, Christopher R. Hudson
The Effects Of Ecological Simulation For Ground Vehicle Mobility Forecasting, Christopher R. Hudson
Theses and Dissertations
Unmanned ground vehicles (UGV) are being explored for use in military domains. Military UGVs operate in complex off-road environments. Vehicle mobility forecasting plays an important role in understanding how and where a vehicle can operate. Traditional mobility forecasting has been done using an analytical model known as the NATO Reference Mobility Model (NRMM). There has been a push to extend the forecasting capabilities of NRMM by integrating more simulation methods. Simulation enables the repeated testing of UGVs in scenarios that would be difficult or dangerous to study in real world testing. To accurately capture UGV performance in simulation, the operating …
Modeling Of Rare Earth Solvent Extraction Process For Flowsheet Design And Optimization, Vaibhav Kumar Srivastava
Modeling Of Rare Earth Solvent Extraction Process For Flowsheet Design And Optimization, Vaibhav Kumar Srivastava
Theses and Dissertations--Mining Engineering
The separation and purification of rare earth elements (REEs) into individual products has been a topic of significant interest for researchers and engineers for many decades. The prime reason for such sustained interest is due to REEs’ demand and application in modern technology, as well as the challenges associated with their separation and purification. The chemical similarity of rare earth group elements is responsible for difficult separability which makes purification of individual elements challenging. Despite associated complications, processes such as solvent extraction (SX) and ion-exchange have been successfully utilized in the separation and production of REEs on pilot and commercial …

Multiphysics Assessment Of Accident Tolerant Fuel, Cladding, And Core Structural Material Concepts, Jacob Preston Gorton
Doctoral Dissertations
The severe accident at the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear power plant in 2011 ignited a global research and development effort to replace traditionally-used materials in Light Water Reactors (LWRs) with Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF) materials. These materials are intended to extend the coping time of nuclear power plants during severe accident scenarios, but must undergo thorough safety and performance evaluations before being implemented. Four ATF concepts are analyzed in this dissertation using state-of-the-art computer modeling tools: (1) iron-chromium-aluminum (FeCrAl) fuel rod cladding, (2) silicon carbide (SiC) fiber-reinforced, SiC matrix composite (SiC/SiC) boiling water reactor (BWR) channel boxes, (3) mixed thorium mononitride (ThN) …
Methods For Dynamic Stabilization, Performance Improvement, And Load Power Sharing In Dc Power Distribution Systems, Hessamaldin Abdollahi
Methods For Dynamic Stabilization, Performance Improvement, And Load Power Sharing In Dc Power Distribution Systems, Hessamaldin Abdollahi
Theses and Dissertations
Modern DC power distribution systems (DC-PDS) offer high efficiency and flexibility which make them ideal for mission-critical applications such as on-board power systems of All-Electric ships, electric vehicles, More-Electric-Aircrafts, and DC Microgrids. Despite these attractive features, there are still challenges that need to be addressed. The two most important challenges are system stability and load power sharing. The stability and performance are of concern because DC-PDS are typically formed by the interconnection of several feedback-controlled power converters. The resulting interactions can lead to destabilizing dynamics. Likewise, in a DC-PDS there are several source converters that are operating in parallel to …
Search-Based Vs. Task-Based Space Surveillance For Ground-Based Telescopes, Fred D. Hertwig
Search-Based Vs. Task-Based Space Surveillance For Ground-Based Telescopes, Fred D. Hertwig
Theses and Dissertations
Persistent Space Situational Awareness (SSA) is one of the top priorities of the DoD. Currently the Space Surveillance Network (SSN) operates using only a task-based method. The goal of this thesis was to compare the current task-based space surveillance performance to a search-based method of space surveillance in the GEO belt region. The performance of a ground telescope network, similar to the Ground-Based Electro-Optical Deep Space Surveillance (GEODSS) network, was modeled and simulated using AGI’s Systems Tool Kit (STK) and Python. The model compared search-based and task-based space surveillance methods by simulating 813 Resident Space Objects (RSOs) on the summer …

Modeling Of Swimming Cells From Nano-Scale To Micro-Scale, Yicheng Zhao
Modeling Of Swimming Cells From Nano-Scale To Micro-Scale, Yicheng Zhao
McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Certain human genetic diseases -- primary ciliary dyskinesia, infertility, and hydrocephalus -- are characterized by changes in beat frequency and waveform of cilia and flagella. Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, which is a single-cell green alga about ten micrometers in diameter that swims with two flagella, serves as an excellent biological model because its flagella share the same structure and genetic background as mammalian cilia and flagella. This study uses the finite element method to investigate the behavior of C. reinhardtii swimming from nano-scale to micro-scale. At the device-level, micro-scale modeling indicates that well-designed acoustic microfluidic devices can be used to trap groups …
Cybersecurity Assessment And Mitigation Stochastic Model, Matthew W. Davis
Cybersecurity Assessment And Mitigation Stochastic Model, Matthew W. Davis
Theses and Dissertations
With numerous cybersecurity incidents and vulnerability concerns in an increasingly contested cyber warfighting environment, the Department of Defense (DoD) has mandated cybersecurity assessment and authorization of all major weapon systems (MWS) before their use. In response to this direction, the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center (AFLCMC) created the Platform Information Technology Assessment and Authorization (PIT A&A) Process. Modeled after the NIST Risk Management Framework (RMF), this process applies a risk-based approach to cybersecurity with the goal of identifying risks and mitigating vulnerabilities in MWS. Within this work, a stochastic model of the PIT A&A Process is presented with an …
Assessment Of Structure From Motion For Reconnaissance Augmentation And Bandwidth Usage Reduction, Jonathan B. Roeber
Assessment Of Structure From Motion For Reconnaissance Augmentation And Bandwidth Usage Reduction, Jonathan B. Roeber
Theses and Dissertations
Modern militaries rely upon remote image sensors for real-time intelligence. A typical remote system consists of an unmanned aerial vehicle, or UAV, with an attached camera. A video stream is sent from the UAV, through a bandwidth-constrained satellite connection, to an intelligence processing unit. In this research, an upgrade to this method of collection is proposed. A set of synthetic images of a scene captured by a UAV in a virtual environment is sent to a pipeline of computer vision algorithms, collectively known as Structure from Motion. The output of Structure from Motion, a three-dimensional model, is then assessed in …
A Multi-Scale Approach For Modeling Shock Ignition And Burn Of Granular Hmx, Pratap Thamanna Rao
A Multi-Scale Approach For Modeling Shock Ignition And Burn Of Granular Hmx, Pratap Thamanna Rao
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT) in confined, low-density granular HMX (65%-85% Theoretical Maximum Density, TMD) occurs by a complex mechanism that involves compaction shock interactions within the material. Piston driven DDT experiments indicate that detonation is abruptly triggered by the interaction of a strong burn-supported secondary shock and a piston-supported primary (input) shock, where the nature of the interaction depends on initial packing density and primary shock strength. These interactions influence transition by affecting hot-spot formation within the micro-structure during pore collapse. In this study, meso-scale simulations of hot-spot formation in shock loaded granular HMX are used to guide the development of …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Training System Approaches For Highly Complex Flight Training, Maria Bauer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research investigates the Training Effectiveness of a low-cost, PC-based training system when compared with two modes (motion and no motion) of a cab training system with large screen for various aviation flying tasks. While much research on this topic has been done in the past, advances in technology have significantly altered what is considered a "low-cost" "simulator." The technology advances have in effect increased the ability of a "low-cost" "simulator" to deliver desired experiences to the user. These "simulators" often are nothing more than PC training system, with only notional representations of the actual aircraft. This research considers the …
