A 3d Imaging-Based Critique Of Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (Waam) Simulations, Omar Oraby
Theses and Dissertations
Residual stresses play a critical role in the mechanical behavior and structural integrity of engineered components. Understanding and quantifying these stresses are essential for ensuring the reliable performance and durability of materials and structures. Traditionally destructive methods are used that involve sample sectioning and material removal. However, non-destructive methods have gained popularity due to their advantages in preserving the specimen's integrity for further testing and material waste reduction. Among these techniques, Digital Image Correlation (DIC) stands out as a powerful non-contact and full-field measurement approach. DIC captures displacements and strain distributions by analyzing the deformation of speckle patterns on the …
Experimental Characterization And Computer Vision-Assisted Detection Of Pitting Corrosion On Stainless Steel Structural Members, Riley J. Muehler
Experimental Characterization And Computer Vision-Assisted Detection Of Pitting Corrosion On Stainless Steel Structural Members, Riley J. Muehler
Master's Theses
Pitting corrosion is a prevalent form of corrosive damage that can weaken, damage, and initiate failure in corrosion-resistant metallic materials. For instance, 304 stainless steel is commonly utilized in various structures (e.g., miter gates, heat exchangers, and storage tanks), but is prone to failure through pitting corrosion and stress corrosion cracking under mechanical loading, regardless of its high corrosion resistance. In this study, to better understand the pitting corrosion damage development, controlled corrosion experiments were conducted to generate pits on 304 stainless steel specimens with and without mechanical loading. The pit development over time was characterized using a high-resolution laser …

Wheat is one of the most widely consumed staple foods in the world, supplying both nutritional and caloric requirements for billions of people. The rising global population and increased food demand behooves all stakeholders across the wheat supply chain to significantly increase their output and efficiency. Beyond the target for increased farm yields, dietary, nutritional, and health requirements along with their continuous supply must be satisfied with improved storage and processing schemes. Post-harvest changes in wheat can result in a significant reduction in its quality. Such losses could be qualitative and/or quantitative, impacting its physical, physiological, organoleptic, and nutritional attributes. …
The Role Of Transient Vibration Of The Skull On Concussion, Rodrigo Dalvit Carvalho Da Silva
The Role Of Transient Vibration Of The Skull On Concussion, Rodrigo Dalvit Carvalho Da Silva
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Concussion is a traumatic brain injury usually caused by a direct or indirect blow to the head that affects brain function. The maximum mechanical impedance of the brain tissue occurs at 450±50 Hz and may be affected by the skull resonant frequencies. After an impact to the head, vibration resonance of the skull damages the underlying cortex. The skull deforms and vibrates, like a bell for 3 to 5 milliseconds, bruising the cortex. Furthermore, the deceleration forces the frontal and temporal cortex against the skull, eliminating a layer of cerebrospinal fluid. When the skull vibrates, the force spreads directly to …

Investigation Of Green Strawberry Detection Using R-Cnn With Various Architectures, Daniel W. Rivers
Master's Theses
Traditional image processing solutions have been applied in the past to detect and count strawberries. These methods typically involve feature extraction followed by object detection using one or more features. Some object detection problems can be ambiguous as to what features are relevant and the solutions to many problems are only fully realized when the modern approach has been applied and tested, such as deep learning.
In this work, we investigate the use of R-CNN for green strawberry detection. The object detection involves finding regions of interest (ROIs) in field images using the selective segmentation algorithm and inputting these regions …

Synthetic Aperture Optical Imaging Interferometric Microscopy With Improved Image Quality, Preyom K. Dey
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The resolution limit of optical microscopy can be extended by using Imaging Interferometric Microscopy (IIM), which uses a low numerical aperture (NA) objective lens to achieve resolution equivalent to that of a high-NA objective lens with multiple sub-images. Along with the resolution enhancement challenge, IIM often suffers from poor image quality. In this dissertation, several image quality improvement methods are proposed and verified with simulation and experimental results. Next, techniques to extend the resolution limit of IIM to ≤ 100nm using a low-NA objective lens are demonstrated. An experimental technique of using a grating coupler on …

Real Vs Fake Faces: Deepfakes And Face Morphing, Jacob L. Dameron
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
The ability to determine the legitimacy of a person’s face in images and video can be important for many applications ranging from social media to border security. From a biometrics perspective, altering one’s appearance to look like a target identity is a direct method of attack against the security of facial recognition systems. Defending against such attacks requires the ability to recognize them as a separate identity from their target. Alternatively, a forensics perspective may view this as a forgery of digital media. Detecting such forgeries requires the ability to detect artifacts not commonly seen in genuine media. This work …

Studies that estimate more than 90% of bacteria subsist in a biofilm state to survive environmental stressors. These biofilms persist on man-made and natural surfaces, and examples of the rich biofilm diversity extends from the roots of bioenergy crops to electroactive biofilms in bioelectrochemical reactors. Efforts to optimize microbial systems in the bioeconomy will benefit from an improved fundamental understanding of bacterial biofilms. An understanding of these microbial systems shows promise to increase crop yields with precision agriculture (e.g. biosynthetic fertilizer, microbial pesticides, and soil remediation) and increase commodity production yields in bioreactors. Yet conventional laboratory methods investigate these micron-scale …
