Orbion Space Technology is a developer and manufacturer of electric propulsion systems for military and commercial spacecraft. Orbion’s products include a Power Processing Unit (PPU) which is utilized for power and control of the satellite propulsion system. These PPUs are complex electro-mechanical assemblies that include multiple Printed Circuit Board Assemblies (PCBA) and are built to IPC standards. To ensure smooth fabrication and to reduce the risk of complications from in-process rework of PCBAs, comprehensive electrical functional testing at the board-level is required before higher- level assembly. Electrical functional testing provides verification of quality, workmanship, and manufacturing defects of the PCBAs. …

The overall objective of this design project was to successfully design a fixture to expedite the repairs of Sawzalls at the Milwaukee Tools repairs facility in Greenwood, Mississippi. This project was executed in accordance with guidelines set forth by the Senior Capstone Design class at the University of Mississippi as well as the quality engineers sponsoring the project at Milwaukee Tools. The fixture was created utilizing an engineering design process with the goal of allowing technicians to press two Sawzall wobbles onto an angled Sawzall wobble shaft using an arbor press with just one press. This report details the development and testing of an improved replacement for a worn manufacturing fixture which was used to position the location of four drilled holes on the outside of a heavy-duty aluminum rail. Commissioned by JohnDow Industries, the new process improves upon the old one by implementing an electro-hydraulic punch and new locating fixture. The new design produced higher quality slots, decreased cycle time by 15%, and aimed to improve the ergonomics of the process for the employees. All these factors contributed to making the aluminum rails a high-quality end product for JohnDow’s customers. Further iteration of the …

Structural design is one of many important aspects in mechanical engineering. Newly discovered composites are making their way into the engineering world. These materials have certain properties which need to be tested in several ways before they can be put to application. One of such tests include the four-point bend test. The fixtures that can be purchased currently can be expensive, typically ranging from $700-$1,000. The University has been struggling to afford commercial jig at this cost and would be helpful if one were available.
