Title: Application of High-Resolution Fiber Optic Data to Enhance Completion Design Major: Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering Date: Thursday, April 18, 2024 Time: 4:00 PM Place: 141 Engineering Science Building
Abstract
Well stimulation is a technique that has been used in the industry for decades, and with the ability to drill wells horizontally the practice has become more valuable and effective than ever before. Its use is consistently being optimized and completions design plays a crucial role in the recovery of hydrocarbons. Several different downhole tools and measurements have been used to optimize these …
Machine Learning Based Real-Time Quantification Of Production From Individual Clusters In Shale Wells, Ayodeji Luke Aboaba
Machine Learning Based Real-Time Quantification Of Production From Individual Clusters In Shale Wells, Ayodeji Luke Aboaba
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
Over the last two decades, there has been advances in downhole monitoring in oil and gas wells with the use of Fiber-Optic sensing technology such as the Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS). Unlike a conventional production log that provides only snapshots of the well performance, DTS provides continuous temperature measurements along the entire wellbore.
Whether by fluid extraction or injection, oil and gas production changes reservoir conditions, and continuous monitoring of downhole conditions is highly desirable. This research study presents a tool for real-time quantification of production from individual perforation clusters in a multi-stage shale well using Artificial Intelligence and Machine …
Application Of Fiber Optics Das On Completion Design Optimization, Aliou Sylla
Application Of Fiber Optics Das On Completion Design Optimization, Aliou Sylla
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
Interstage communication during well stimulation reducing the effectivity of the well completion is known to be a concern in the oil and gas industry. The leading cause of this is fracture communication due to the presence of natural fractures where the formation is being hydraulically fractured. In this study, a technique was developed to map natural fractures, on a larger scale, underground to be able to avoid the high fracture intensity zones when hydraulically fracturing. This study developed a technique to optimize well completion designs by introducing the ability of locating natural fractures zones in the formation (Marcellus Shale) which …

An Exploration In Fiber Optic Sensors, Frederick Alexander Seng
Theses and Dissertations
With the rise of modern infrastructure and systems, testing and evaluation of specific components such as structural health monitoring is becoming increasingly important. Fiber optic sensors are ideal for testing and evaluating these systems due many advantages such as their lightweight, compact, and dielectric nature. This thesis presents a novel method for detecting electric fields in harsh environments with slab coupled optical sensors (SCOS) as well as a novel method for detecting strain gradients on a Hopkinson bar specimen using fiber Bragg gratings (FBG). Fiber optic electric field sensors are ideal for characterizing the electric field in many different systems. …

Self Similar Optical Fiber, Zheng-Xuan Lai
Self Similar Optical Fiber, Zheng-Xuan Lai
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Dissertations
This research proposes Self Similar optical fiber (SSF) as a new type of optical fiber. It has a special core that consists of self similar structure. Such a structure is obtained by following the formula for generating iterated function systems (IFS) in Fractal Theory. The resulted SSF can be viewed as a true fractal object in optical fibers. In addition, the method of fabricating SSF makes it possible to generate desired structures exponentially in numbers, whereas it also allows lower scale units in the structure to be reduced in size exponentially. The invention of SSF is expected to greatly ease …

Development Of A Gis Fiber Optics Assetmanagement System For The City Of El Paso, Luis Fernando Quintana
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The GIS Fiber Optics Asset Management System (GFOAMS) was developed for the City of El Paso, to manage the public fiber optics infrastructure. Using a map-driven interface, the GFOAMS is composed of three modules: inventory, documents, and images. Its interactive multilayer data structure contains information for Junction Boxes, Conduit Runs, and Cables for twelve fiber optic systems across the city. The fiber optics network stored in the GFOAMS connects city buildings and facilities such as police departments, fire departments, municipal courts, health administration building, public transportation facilities/Sun Metro, libraries and others. Applications of the GFOAMS include tools to easy access …
Hybrid Ftth Optical Network Using Incoherent Optical Code Division Multiple Access, Joel Quintana
Hybrid Ftth Optical Network Using Incoherent Optical Code Division Multiple Access, Joel Quintana
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Over the past 20 years there has been extensive research on the application of spread spectrum multiplexing techniques for communications via optical fiber. Optical Code Division Multiplexing (OCDMA) is the technique that has exhibited the most promise as a primary multiplexing vehicle for the transition into all-optical processing of data, and as a supplement to other techniques such as Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) and Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM). OCDMA can be classified into incoherent OCDMA, where coding and detection is done on the basis of optical power, and coherent OCDMA where coding is done on a field amplitude basis. The …

Design, Simulation, Fabrication And Testing Of Microprobes For A New Mems Wafer Probe Card, Yanwei Zhang
Dissertations
A new type of MEMS cantilever wafer probe card consists of an array of microcantilevers individually actuated by bimorph heating to make contact with the test chip was designed and fabricated. This probe card is called the CHIPP (Conformable, High-Pin count, Programmable ) card and can be designed to contact up to 800 I/O pads along the perimeter of a 1 cm2 chip with a microprobe repeat distance of ~50 µm. Each microcantilever had an internal heater and a separate electrode carrying the signal under test and contained four separate layers plus a fifth material for the contact tip …
