Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Laser-powder bed fusion (L-PBF) is an additive manufacturing technique for fabricating metal components with complex design and customized features. However, only a limited number of materials have been widely studied using L-PBF. AISI 420 stainless steel, an alloy with a useful combination of high strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance, is an example of one such material where few L-PBF investigations have emerged to date. In this dissertation, L-PBF experiments were conducted using 420 stainless steel powders to understand the effects of chemical composition, particle size distribution and processing parameters on ensuing physical, mechanical and corrosion properties and microstructure in comparison …

Vertical Electrical Impedance Measurements On Concrete Bridge Decks Using A Large-Area Electrode, Jeffrey David Barton Aug 2018

Vertical Electrical Impedance Measurements On Concrete Bridge Decks Using A Large-Area Electrode, Jeffrey David Barton

Theses and Dissertations

In regions where chloride-based deicing salts are applied to bridge decks, corrosion of the interior steel reinforcement is a major problem. Vertical electrical impedance (VEI) is an effective measurement technique to quantitatively assess the cover protection on bridges against aggressive chemical penetration of reinforced concrete. In its current form, traditional vertical electrical impedance is time-consuming and destructive because a direct connection to the reinforcing steel is required to provide a ground reference. A new method using a large-area electrode (LAE) permits VEI measurement without a direct electrical connection to the steel reinforcement. The LAE creates a nondestructive, semi-direct, low impedance …

Fundamental Investigation Of Magnesium Corrosion Using Experiments And Simulation, Dila Ram Banjade Jul 2018

Fundamental Investigation Of Magnesium Corrosion Using Experiments And Simulation, Dila Ram Banjade

Theses and Dissertations

Magnesium (Mg) is the lightest of all structural metals and has tremendous potential for applications in the lightweight industry. However, the corrosion of Mg is a significant barrier towards its wider use. Despite years of research, the fundamental understanding of Mg corrosion still remains short. The enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with anodic polarization, the modeling of galvanic corrosion and the impact of hydrogen bubbles for galvanically coupled Mg are important aspects of Mg corrosion that need to be understood before any mitigation measures can be taken. The results presented in this work provide a key step in that direction. …

Numerical Study Of Oxidation In Stainless Steel Alloy Ep-823 By Liquid Lead-Bismuth Eutectic, Rajyalakshmi Palaparty May 2018

Numerical Study Of Oxidation In Stainless Steel Alloy Ep-823 By Liquid Lead-Bismuth Eutectic, Rajyalakshmi Palaparty

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The oxidation of stainless steel is influenced by the presence of oxygen in the surrounding medium; the oxygen reacts with the alloy to form an oxide. In certain environments, such as nuclear reactor coolant systems, minimal oxidation of the stainless steel containment functions as a protective shield from corrosive coolants such as liquid lead-bismuth eutectic.

In the current study, this minimal oxidation is evaluated for a system in which corrosion-resistant stainless steel alloy EP-823 is subject to an environment of flowing oxygenated liquid lead-bismuth eutectic at a temperature of 743 K, whereby the thickness of the forming oxide layer is …

The Influence Of Organic Pigments On Coating Properties, Sarah Medeiros Jan 2018

The Influence Of Organic Pigments On Coating Properties, Sarah Medeiros

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Abstract

The purpose of this project was to identify the qualities of two synthesized organic pigments added to a coating. These high-performance pigments were benzodipyrrolidone and benzodifuranone, which are π-conjugated monomers. These pigments were each formulated into two different pigment concentrations and compared with a control that had no pigment. This project is limited by time constraints and the number of variables that can be tested in that time. Performance testing was conducted to evaluate the qualities of these coatings. The results demonstrated that the coatings were reproducible and most tests had results that were equal to or exceeded the …

Corrosion Performance Of Zirconium-Based Passivations On Electroplated Zinc Nickel, Madison Morgan Reed

Masters Theses

“Performance requirements for Department of Defense (DoD) electrical components include corrosion and electrical contact resistance. Historically, electroplated cadmium with a chromate conversion coating (CrCC) has been used to meet corrosion and contact resistance standards. However, replacements are needed for these materials because they are toxic and carcinogenic. Electroplated γ-ZnNi has been identified as an acceptable alternative to Cd. This study evaluated commercially available Zr-based thin films and sealers as passivations for potential replacement of CrCCs. Ten different passivations were tested and compared with bare γ-ZnNi. X-Bond and Zircobond passivations were found to provide some improvement to the bare ZnNi corrosion …
