Nondestructive Evaluation Of Structural Defects In Concrete Slabs, Ehsanul Kabir Jan 2023

Nondestructive Evaluation Of Structural Defects In Concrete Slabs, Ehsanul Kabir

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nondestructive testing (NDT) is a reliable method for determining the structural integrity of new and old construction and understanding the condition of structural defects. It is widely acknowledged that the interpretation of nondestructive evaluation (NDE) has a significant impact on the reliability and consistency of this technology. However, NDT data acquisition remains subjective and heavily dependent on the operator’s knowledge and expertise. As a result, there are still issues to be resolved regarding the imaging and diagnostic procedures for NDT-based concrete inspection. NDT methods such as ground penetrating radar (GPR), and impact-echo (IE), have been extensively used to inspect concrete …

Hydration, Shrinkage, Cracking, And Mechanical Properties Of Cementitious Materials With Lignocellulosic Biomass Wastes., Aofei Guo Dec 2020

Hydration, Shrinkage, Cracking, And Mechanical Properties Of Cementitious Materials With Lignocellulosic Biomass Wastes., Aofei Guo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The disposal of lignocellulosic biomass wastes imposes a huge economic and environmental burden on this society. Recycling lignocellulosic biomass wastes and applying them to cementitious materials provides a sustainable and value-added way for both agriculture and concrete industries. To comprehensively identify the effect of lignocellulosic biomass wastes at different scales on cementitious materials, the hydration, shrinkage, cracking, and mechanical properties of cementitious materials with lignocellulosic biomass wastes were studied. Given the three different forms (powders, chips, and fibers) of lignocellulosic biomass wastes in this study, the research was implemented in three stages. In the first stage, hemp powders were collected …

An Investigation On The Effects Of Cellulose Nanofibrils On The Performance Of Cement Based Composites, Hosain Haddad Kolour Dec 2019

An Investigation On The Effects Of Cellulose Nanofibrils On The Performance Of Cement Based Composites, Hosain Haddad Kolour

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) are hydrophilic biodegradable nanoparticles (typically, less than 0.2 mm in length and 20-50 nm in width) that can be extracted from various plants, trees, and recycled paper stock. Their low density, low toxicity, relatively low cost, high aspect ratio, and high specific surface enable functionalization. In this work, the effects of CNFs on selected properties of cement paste, mortar, and concrete were investigated. For the cement pastes, rheology tests using a simple rheometer showed a reduction in workability as CNF dosage increased. Free shrinkage tests showed an increase in shrinkage at high w/c ratios but a decrease …

Feasibility Of Hybrid Thermoplastic Composite-Concrete Load Bearing System, Camerin M. Seigars Aug 2018

Feasibility Of Hybrid Thermoplastic Composite-Concrete Load Bearing System, Camerin M. Seigars

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thermoplastic composites have many advantages over thermoset composites such as being recyclable, rapidly manufacturable, and more impact resistant. The goal of this thesis is to assess the feasibility of using thermoplastic composites in structural applications through literature review, mechanical testing, design of a load-bearing hybrid composite-concrete structures, and the implementation of thermoplastic composites for tensile reinforcement of concrete. The study had four objectives covering the stated goal.

  1. Conduct a literature review to direct thermoplastic material selection
  2. Characterize thermoplastic material mechanical properties using standardized mechanical testing
  3. Design a hybrid composite-reinforced concrete beam, and
  4. Develop thermoplastic shear connectors to develop composite action …

Testing And Modeling Of The Thixotropic Behavior Of Cementitious Materials., Bashir Hasanzadeh Dec 2017

Testing And Modeling Of The Thixotropic Behavior Of Cementitious Materials., Bashir Hasanzadeh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During construction, concrete goes under various operations. It is normally transported to the job site, be placed and consolidated in the formwork, etc. The easiness and quality of these operations are very much related to the intrinsic rheological properties of concrete. Therefore, a good understanding of rheological behavior of concrete under various conditions are needed. Thixotropy is an important part of rheology. The thixotropic behaviors of concrete can be good representatives of its flow behaviors on the job site. For example, the breakdown aspect of thixotropy can help to explain how its flow behavior can impact concrete pumping and its …

Reflectivity Of Light Emitting Diodes (Led) And Incandescent Lights On Concrete And Asphalt Pavements., Jeremy Elliott Rice Dec 2016

Reflectivity Of Light Emitting Diodes (Led) And Incandescent Lights On Concrete And Asphalt Pavements., Jeremy Elliott Rice

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to investigate the reflectivity of light on concrete and asphalt pavement systems. In 1983, the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) published the first recommended practice (RP-8) for the design of roadway and parking lot lighting. This design method implemented empirically tested factors which were defined as the “reduced luminance coefficients” or the R-Tables. The R-Tables are essential for proper design of light pole installation dimensions, required power, and the distribution of light. The originally tested pavements are not necessarily representative of modern pavement materials used today. Moreover, recent Light Emitting Diodes (LED) are a relatively …

Experimental And Numerical Investigations On Bond Durability Of Cfrp Strengthened Concrete Members Subjected To Environmental Exposure, Haider Al-Jelawy Jan 2013

Experimental And Numerical Investigations On Bond Durability Of Cfrp Strengthened Concrete Members Subjected To Environmental Exposure, Haider Al-Jelawy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have become an attractive alternative to conventional methods for external-strengthening of civil infrastructure, particularly as applied to flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) members. However, durability of the bond between FRP composite and concrete has shown degradation under some aggressive environments. Although numerous studies have been conducted on concrete members strengthened with FRP composites, most of those studies have focused on the degradation of FRP material itself, relatively few on bond behavior under repeated mechanical and environmental loading. This thesis investigates bond durability under accelerated environmental conditioning of two FRP systems commonly employed in civil …

Structural Condition Assessment Of Prestressed Concrete Transit Guideways, Robert Zachary Shmerling Jan 2005

Structural Condition Assessment Of Prestressed Concrete Transit Guideways, Robert Zachary Shmerling

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Objective condition assessment is essential to make better decisions for safety and serviceability of existing civil infrastructure systems. This study explores the condition of an existing transit guideway system that has been in service for thirty-five years. The structural system is composed of six-span continuous prestressed concrete bridge segments. The overall transit system incorporates a number of continuous bridges which share common design details, geometries, and loading conditions. The original analysis is based on certain simplifying assumptions such as rigid behavior over supports and simplified tendon/concrete/steel plate interaction. The current objective is to conduct a representative study for a more …
