Air Vehicle Path Planning, Jeffrey M. Hebert Dec 2001

Air Vehicle Path Planning, Jeffrey M. Hebert

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores optimal path planning for air vehicles. An air vehicle exposed to illumination by a tracking radar is considered and the problem of determining an optimal planar trajectory connecting two prespecified points is addressed. An analytic solution yielding the trajectory minimizing the received radar energy reflected from the target is derived using the Calculus of Variations. Additionally, the related problem of an air vehicle tracked by a passive sensor is also solved. Using the insights gained from the single air vehicle radar exposure minimization problem, a hierarchical cooperative control law is formulated to determine the optimal trajectories that …

Air Vehicle Optimal Trajectories For Radar Exposure Minimization, Michael C. Novy Mar 2001

Air Vehicle Optimal Trajectories For Radar Exposure Minimization, Michael C. Novy

Theses and Dissertations

This study addresses the problem of analyzing the single vehicle path planning problem for radar exposure minimization. The calculus of Variations and optimal control are applied to formulate the cost function and numerical algorithms are used to solve for the optimal paths. Cost sensitivity to path length is analyzed for flight against one radar; a second radar is then included in the formulation and the optimal path for flight between the radars is found for cases of equal and unequal radar power. The costs of the optimal path, direct path, and Voronoi diagram-generated paths are compared. Results indicate low sensitivity …

The Determinants Of Locational Choice For Air Force Military Renters: Implications For Policy, Eldrick L. Hill Mar 1999

The Determinants Of Locational Choice For Air Force Military Renters: Implications For Policy, Eldrick L. Hill

Theses and Dissertations

Housing allowances and military family housing make up approximately $7 billion dollars of the budget for the Department of Defense (DoD). The military uses a Housing Market Analysis (HMA) to determine rental housing availability around its installations. This thesis describes and analyzes the locational choices of military renters. This thesis examines 16 bases in the continental U.S. using military and census data. It is concluded that the locational preferences of military renters vary inversely with distance from their duty location and this needs to be accounted for when assessing the availability of military rental housing. The implications of military renter …

Optimal Pulsed Pumping For Remediation Of Aquifers When Sorption Is Rate-Limited, Lawrence J. Schmitt Dec 1997

Optimal Pulsed Pumping For Remediation Of Aquifers When Sorption Is Rate-Limited, Lawrence J. Schmitt

Theses and Dissertations

A variational optimization technique is developed to acquire an optimal schedule of pulsed pumping operations for use at existing pump-and-treat aquifer remediation sites. The optimization problem is stated as a minimization of a generic management objective functional, constrained by the contaminant transport equations in two-dimensional or three-dimensional flow models which account for rate-limited sorption. The two-dimensional case is fully developed and a first-order rate equation is used to describe the transport of sorbing contaminant. The first variation provides necessary optimality conditions that must be met by any optimal solution, in turn leading to a pulsed pumping schedule of operation. The …
