Contextualizing Renewable Energy Adoption: An Examination Of The Role Of Community Choice Aggregation, Ankit Agarwal Jan 2024

Contextualizing Renewable Energy Adoption: An Examination Of The Role Of Community Choice Aggregation, Ankit Agarwal

Doctoral Dissertations

"The rapid expansion of renewable energy generation in the U.S., both through distributed and utility-scale facilities, is largely driven by top-down policy measures and the growing engagement of residential consumers on both individual and community levels. Previous studies on motives behind residential renewable energy adoption have examined procurement options in isolation and within a static context, primarily focused on intrinsic attributes like economic incentives, emission reductions, and peer popularity. This research introduces a novel context, assessing renewable procurement options in the presence of Community Choice Aggregation (CCA), a more prevalent and accessible alternative. This dissertation makes four pivotal contributions, offering …

Finding Core Members Of A Hedonic Game, Daniele M. Vernon-Bido May 2022

Finding Core Members Of A Hedonic Game, Daniele M. Vernon-Bido

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Agent-based modeling (ABM) is a frequently used paradigm for social simulation; however, there is little evidence of its use in strategic coalition formations. There are few models that explore coalition formation and even fewer that validate their results against an expected outcome. Cooperative game theory is often used to study strategic coalition formation but solving games involving a significant number of agents is computationally intractable. However, there is a natural linkage between ABM and the study of strategic coalition formation. A foundational feature of ABM is the interaction of agents and their environment. Coalition formation is primarily the result of …

A Systematic Stakeholder-Driven Framework For Empirical Characterization And Parameterization Of Human Agents For Agent-Based Modeling Of Older Adults' Transportation, Nilufer Oran Gibson

Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations

Standard of living for health and well-being of oneself and of one’s family is a human right. Vulnerable populations are incapable of maintaining an adequate standard of living due to several reasons, such as financial constraints, racial profiling, health conditions, aging, and the combination of these reasons. To alleviate their vulnerability, the most basic needs of the vulnerable populations must be met. Transportation is the essential link to the resources to address the basic needs of the vulnerable populations. Transportation solutions tailored for vulnerable populations to meet their basic needs have multiple dimensions that require the involvement of all government …

One Step At A Time: Improving The Fidelity Of Geospatial Agent-Based Models Using Empirical Data, Amy A. Marusak Dec 2021

One Step At A Time: Improving The Fidelity Of Geospatial Agent-Based Models Using Empirical Data, Amy A. Marusak

Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Theses

Agent-based modeling is frequently used to produce geospatial models of transportation systems. However, reducing the computational requirements of these models can require a degree of abstraction that can compromise the fidelity of the modeled environment. The purpose of the agent-based model presented in this thesis is to explore the potential of a volunteer-based crowd-shipping system for rescuing surplus meals from restaurants and delivering them to homeless shelters in Arlington, Texas. Each iteration of the model’s development has sought to improve model realism by incorporating empirical data to strengthen underlying assumptions. This thesis describes the most recent iteration, in which a …

Agent-Based Model Simulation For Police Deployment Decision-Making In Patrol Operations, Yasaman Ghasemi Aug 2021

Agent-Based Model Simulation For Police Deployment Decision-Making In Patrol Operations, Yasaman Ghasemi

Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations

Police patrolling plays a key role in responding to 911 calls and reducing crimes. The effectiveness of patrol operations heavily depends on the deployment of police officers – e.g., the number of officers assigned to specific policing districts or beats. The complex nature of the policing system – dynamic and stochastic criminal behavior, compounded with limited policing resources, render current (traditional) police operations, which are often managed in a reactive and stationary manner – often makes it very challenging to manage and control. This study develops an agent-based simulation framework to address the dynamically changing environment in police operations and …

In the first …

Using Empirical Data To Design And Validate Hybrid Simulation Models Of Human Behavior In Service Operations, Mohammed Farhan May 2021

Using Empirical Data To Design And Validate Hybrid Simulation Models Of Human Behavior In Service Operations, Mohammed Farhan

Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to examine how a change in a team member's role, team dynamics, and organizational policies impact an individual's motivation to engage in helping behavior, as well as the impact of helping behavior on service system operational performance. To analyze these behavioral dynamics in a dynamic setting, this research integrates empirical human behavioral data into a hybrid discrete-event and agent-based simulation model of service operations in a restaurant. The model was then validated using Metamorphic Testing (MT), an approach that has previously been used for verification of software. Recent research shows that MT can be …

An Agent-Based Decision Support Framework For Suas Deployment In Small Infantry Units, Carsten Douglas Christensen Jun 2020

An Agent-Based Decision Support Framework For Suas Deployment In Small Infantry Units, Carsten Douglas Christensen

Theses and Dissertations

Small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) will become a disruptive force on the modern battlefield. In recent years, sUAS size and cost have decreased while their capability has increased. They have forced a reconsideration of the air superiority paradigm held since the First World War. Perhaps their most attractive, and worrisome, feature is the huge range of combat roles that they might fulfill. The presence of sUAS on future battlefields is certain, but the role they will play and their impact on those battlefields are not. This work presents a decision support framework for sUAS deployment in small infantry units. The …

A Systems-Level Approach To The Design, Evaluation, And Optimization Of Electrified Transportation Networks Using Agent-Based Modeling, Landon Clark Willey Jun 2020

A Systems-Level Approach To The Design, Evaluation, And Optimization Of Electrified Transportation Networks Using Agent-Based Modeling, Landon Clark Willey

Theses and Dissertations

Rising concerns related to the effects of traffic congestion have led to the search for alternative transportation solutions. Advances in battery technology have resulted in an increase of electric vehicles (EVs), which serve to reduce the impact of many of the negative consequences of congestion, including pollution and the cost of wasted fuel. Furthermore, the energy-efficiency and quiet operation of electric motors have made feasible concepts such as Urban Air Mobility (UAM), in which electric aircraft transport passengers in dense urban areas prone to severe traffic slowdowns. Electrified transportation may be the solution needed to combat urban gridlock, but many …

Evaluation Of Data Collection Operations For Real-Time Influenza Surveillance During An Emergency, Yuwen Gu Aug 2019

Evaluation Of Data Collection Operations For Real-Time Influenza Surveillance During An Emergency, Yuwen Gu

Dissertations

It is unclear how data collection operations for surveillance alter the disease portrayal that influenza reported trends attempt to provide during an emergency. This study developed a model that simulates the collection and testing of influenza specimens after an outbreak is declared in Michigan. It performed simulation based optimization to understand which operational factors affect the biases between the growth rates of original and observed influenza incidence trends, and to quantify the predictive power of the influenza incidence trends at different points of data collection. The results show that emergency driven high risk perception increases the reporting, which leads to …

Analyzing Collaboration In Food Assistance Networks Using Agent-Based Modeling, Joyita Mostafa Aug 2019

Analyzing Collaboration In Food Assistance Networks Using Agent-Based Modeling, Joyita Mostafa

Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations

To address the issue of food insecurity, many small independent agencies, known as food pantries, collect and distribute donated food to food-insecure clients. However, the supply of donated food varies significantly from week to week, leading to frequent mismatches in supply and demand. One approach to addressing this problem is to facilitate greater food pantry collaboration, such that they are able to balance supply and demand among themselves. However, their interpersonal relationships and the additional costs associated with transshipments can be a barrier to collaboration. The objective of this research is to use modeling to gain a better understanding of …

Generating Strong Diversity Of Opinions: Agent Models Of Continuous Opinion Dynamics, Christopher W. Weimer Sep 2018

Generating Strong Diversity Of Opinions: Agent Models Of Continuous Opinion Dynamics, Christopher W. Weimer

Theses and Dissertations

Opinion dynamics is the study of how opinions in a group of individuals change over time. A goal of opinion dynamics modelers has long been to find a social science-based model that generates strong diversity -- smooth, stable, possibly multi-modal distributions of opinions. This research lays the foundations for and develops such a model. First, a taxonomy is developed to precisely describe agent schedules in an opinion dynamics model. The importance of scheduling is shown with applications to generalized forms of two models. Next, the meta-contrast influence field (MIF) model is defined. It is rooted in self-categorization theory and improves …

Modeling The Spatiotemporal Dynamics Of Cells In The Lung, Joshua Jeremy Pothen Jan 2016

Modeling The Spatiotemporal Dynamics Of Cells In The Lung, Joshua Jeremy Pothen

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Multiple research problems related to the lung involve a need to take into account the spatiotemporal dynamics of the underlying component cells. Two such problems involve better understanding the nature of the allergic inflammatory response to explore what might cause chronic inflammatory diseases such as asthma, and determining the rules underlying stem cells used to engraft decellularized lung scaffolds in the hopes of growing new lungs for transplantation. For both problems, we model the systems computationally using agent-based modeling, a tool that enables us to capture these spatiotemporal dynamics by modeling any biological system as a collection of agents (cells) …

Multi-Method Modeling Framework For Support Of Integrated Water Resources Management, Vladimir V. Nikolic Apr 2015

Multi-Method Modeling Framework For Support Of Integrated Water Resources Management, Vladimir V. Nikolic

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The existing definition of integrated water resources management (IWRM) promotes a holistic approach to water resources management practice. The IWRM deals with planning, design and operation of complex systems in order to control the quantity, quality, temporal and spatial distribution of water with the main objective of meeting human and ecological needs and providing protection from water disasters. One of the main challenges of IWRM is development of tools for operational implementation of the concept and dynamic coupling of physical and socio-economic components of water resources systems. This research examines the role of simulation in IWRM practices, analyses the advantages …

Evolutionary Search For Models Of Planarian Regeneration Using Experimental Data, Marianna Viktorovna Budnikova Dec 2014

Evolutionary Search For Models Of Planarian Regeneration Using Experimental Data, Marianna Viktorovna Budnikova

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The ability of science to produce experimental data greatly surpasses our current ability to effectively visualize, conceptualize, and integrate the vast volumes of available data into a unified understanding of how complex biological systems work. This inability is a hindrance to scientific progress, and is particularly daunting when one considers multidimensional and shape-based observations as in the field of regenerative biology. For example, for at least the last 200 years, scientists have been interested in the exceptional ability of Planaria to regenerate lost tissues from damage, and there is a large amount of experimental data available on this organism. However, …

Application Of Agent-Based Approaches To Enhance Container Terminal Operations, Omor Sharif Abul Bashar Mohammad

Theses and Dissertations

Queuing at marine terminal gates has long been identified as a source of emissions and high drayage costs due to the large number of trucks idling. The first study in this dissertation addresses queuing of trucks at marine terminal gates and presents a novel agent-based framework where the drayage companies can minimize congestion by using the provided real-time gate queuing information. The problem was tackled based on the approach of El Farol Bar problem from game theory. Our proposed model can be used as a means of managing demand for the marine terminals, assuming that drayage firms will adjust their …

Towards A Theory Of Understanding Within Problem Situations, Jose J. Padilla Apr 2010

Towards A Theory Of Understanding Within Problem Situations, Jose J. Padilla

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The concept of understanding is ambiguously used across areas of study, such as philosophy and cognitive sciences. This ambiguity partly originates from understanding's generally accepted definition of 'grasping' of something. Further, the concept is confounded with concurrent processes such as learning and decision making. This dissertation provides a general theory of understanding (GTU) that explains the concept of understanding unambiguously and separated from concurrent processes.

The GTU distinguishes between the process of understanding and its outcomes. Understanding, defined as a process, is the matching of knowledge, worldview, and problem. The outcome of this process is the assignment of a truth …

Developing A Philosophical Profile Of The Individual For Complex Problem-Solving Through Agent-Based Modeling, Ipek Bozkurt Jul 2009

Developing A Philosophical Profile Of The Individual For Complex Problem-Solving Through Agent-Based Modeling, Ipek Bozkurt

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Research that focuses on the emotional, mental, behavioral and cognitive capabilities of individuals has been abundant within disciplines such as psychology, sociology, and anthropology, among others. The main argument made in this dissertation, however, is that a different perspective is necessary in order to gain insight about individuals when facing the complex problems that are presented within engineering and management disciplines. This is done by developing the Philosophical Profile of the Individual (PPI) that uses epistemology, ontology and teleology as underlying dimensions of philosophical predispositions. The epistemology dimension considers whether an individual is an Empiricist or a Rationalist, the ontology …
