Ingestion of lead-contaminated drinking water is one of the major pathways for human exposure to lead. Addition of sodium silicate can potentially control lead release from lead service lines (LSLs) to the water that they convey, but the mechanism of silica uptake and corrosion control have not been reported. Knowledge of variables which affect the uptake of dissolved silica and the consumption rate of added sodium silicate by scales of corrosion products that are present on lead service lines will be useful to water utilities and distribution systems. Recently discovered, graphene and graphene oxide materials have drawn considerable research attention due to outstanding and novel properties, which underpin wide material potential for a number of advanced applications including supercapacitors, solar cells, sensors, catalysts, semiconductors, sorbents, and membranes, among others. Graphene oxides (GO), which are considered as a family of oxidized graphene materials (derivatives), is a key precursor to the synthesis of free-standing graphene via oxidation-exfoliation-reduction pathways. GO properties depend on the synthesis routes/conditions (i.e. derivatization), including partially maintaining graphene (i.e. sp2) properties. Further, oxygen-containing functionalities (epoxy, hydroxyl, carbonyl, and carboxyl groups) render GO hydrophilic – and correspondingly stability …

Applying Bayesian Machine Learning Methods To Theoretical Surface Science, Shane Carr

Machine learning is a rapidly evolving field in computer science with increasingly many applications to other domains. In this thesis, I present a Bayesian machine learning approach to solving a problem in theoretical surface science: calculating the preferred active site on a catalyst surface for a given adsorbate molecule. I formulate the problem as a low-dimensional objective function. I show how the objective function can be approximated into a certain confidence interval using just one iteration of the self-consistent field (SCF) loop in density functional theory (DFT). I then use Bayesian optimization to perform a global search for the solution. …
