Comparison Of Carbon Fiber And Fiberglass On Concrete Strength, Justin A. Baker
Comparison Of Carbon Fiber And Fiberglass On Concrete Strength, Justin A. Baker
Construction Management
The purpose of this paper is to compare two common polymers of the construction industry and determine if there are benefits of using them in concrete application to increase overall strength. The goal of the project is to complete a full experiment, utilizing concrete cylinders and beams to test the compressive and tensile properties of fiberglass and carbon fiber. This paper provides data from the experimentation of the compressive and tensile tests of carbon fiber and fiberglass to prove that these polymers are superior and aid in overall concrete strength. The experiment proved that carbon fiber is superior to fiberglass, …

Boeing uses composite components for the 777x aircraft. The production of composite parts results in flashing (excess material) that must be trimmed and "thrown away" as scrap. Boeing is investigating means of recycling these scraps. The method proposed for this project is to delaminate and shred the composite material. The delamination process uses a ram to press two claw shaped devices together that bends and deforms the material in opposite directions. The chipper process uses counter rotating saw blades spaced 1/8” apart to produce small shredded material. This shredding material is pyrolyzed (heated) to decay the resin leaving the carbon …

The University of Akron’s Human Powered Vehicle Team designed a high performing, fully functioning vehicle that is safe, efficient, and practical for the 2018-2019 season. These objectives were the main priorities when it came to the initial stages of designing the vehicle. In addition, the vehicle was designed in accordance with the ASME 2019 Human Powered Vehicle Challenge guidelines to satisfy all the rules and requirements. Additional priorities have been created to teach practical engineering skills and techniques to the students participating in the project through different points in the production process including research, vehicle design, construction, and testing.
