Improved Ballistic Wind Prediction Using Projectile Tracking Data, William Arthur Kenney Jul 2017

Improved Ballistic Wind Prediction Using Projectile Tracking Data, William Arthur Kenney

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The United States Air Force AC-130 gunships have been in operation since the Vietnam War and have seen frequent use during recent conflicts. They are able to employ gun weapon systems from above a target in a way that maximizes possible time on target. When firing, the gun operators must deal with miss distances caused by winds acting on the projectile in flight. Operators currently perform a “tweak” to predict a ballistic wind affecting fired rounds which is then used in the fire-control to correct for the real winds and bring shots onto target. This correction, a single-point wind prediction, …

System Identification Of A Circulation Control Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Mohammed Agha Jan 2017

System Identification Of A Circulation Control Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Mohammed Agha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The advancement in automation and sensory systems in recent years has led to an increase the demand of UAV missions. Due to this increase in demand, the research community has gained interest in investigating UAV performance enhancing systems. Circulation Control (CC), which is an active control flow method used to enhance UAV lift, is a performance enhancing system currently studied. In prior research, experimental studies have shown that Circulation Control wings (CCW) implemented on class-I UAVs can reduce take-off distance by 54%. Wind tunnel tests reveal that CC improves aircraft payload capabilities through lift enhancement. Increasing aircraft payload capabilities causes …

Gravitational Potential Modeling Of Near-Earth Contact Binaries, Stephanie Wood Jan 2017

Gravitational Potential Modeling Of Near-Earth Contact Binaries, Stephanie Wood

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

A significant component of recent space exploration has been unmanned mission to comets

and asteroids. The increase in interest for these bodies necessitates an increase in demand

for higher fidelity trajectory simulations in order to assure mission success. Most available

methods for simulating trajectories about asymmetric bodies assume they are of uniform

density. This thesis examines a hybrid method that merges a mass concentration ("mascon")

model and a spherical harmonic model using the "Brillouin sphere" as the interface. This

joint model will be used for simulating trajectories about variable density bodies and, in

particular, contact binary asteroids and comets.

The …

Modeling Of Tow Wrinkling In Automated Fiber Placement Based On Geometrical Considerations, Roudy Wehbe Jan 2017

Modeling Of Tow Wrinkling In Automated Fiber Placement Based On Geometrical Considerations, Roudy Wehbe

Theses and Dissertations

Automated manufacturing of fiber reinforced composite structures via numerically controlled hardware yields parts with increased accuracy and repeatability as compared to hand-layup parts. Automated fiber placement (AFP) is one such process in which structures or parts are built by adding bands of prescribed number of tows or slit-tape with prescribed width using robotic machine heads over 3D surfaces following prescribed paths. Despite the improved accuracy, different types of defects or manufacturing features arise during fabrication. These defects can be due to geometrical features, materials, and process planning parameters and are detected in the form of wrinkling, tow twist, tow folding, …
