Sensor Management For Localization And Tracking In Wireless Sensor Networks, Nianxia Cao Dec 2016

Sensor Management For Localization And Tracking In Wireless Sensor Networks, Nianxia Cao

Dissertations - ALL

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are very useful in many application areas including battlefield surveillance, environment monitoring and target tracking, industrial processes and health monitoring and control. The classical WSNs are composed of large number of densely deployed sensors, where sensors are battery-powered devices with limited signal processing capabilities. In the crowdsourcing based WSNs, users who carry devices with built-in sensors are recruited as sensors. In both WSNs, the sensors send their observations regarding the target to a central node called the fusion center for final inference. With limited resources, such as limited communication bandwidth among the WSNs and limited sensor …

Indoor Scene Localization To Fight Sex Trafficking In Hotels, Abigail Stylianou Dec 2016

Indoor Scene Localization To Fight Sex Trafficking In Hotels, Abigail Stylianou

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Images are key to fighting sex trafficking. They are: (a) used to advertise for sex services,(b) shared among criminal networks, and (c) connect a person in an image to the place where the image was taken. This work explores the ability to link images to indoor places in order to support the investigation and prosecution of sex trafficking. We propose and develop a framework that includes a database of open-source information available on the Internet, a crowd-sourcing approach to gathering additional images, and explore a variety of matching approaches based both on hand-tuned features such as SIFT and learned features …

Localization, Visualization And Evacuation Guidance System In Emergency Situations, Jingyan Tang Jul 2016

Localization, Visualization And Evacuation Guidance System In Emergency Situations, Jingyan Tang

Masters Theses

Urban search and rescue is needed for a variety of emergencies or disasters, including tornadoes, floods, dam failures, technological accidents, and terrorist activities. The efficiency to save people is becoming very important. With the development of the technology, people are trying to find a better way to help people get out of the dangerous places as soon as possible. DIORAMA system has been proposed to help with this problem and turns out very successful on improving efficiency during emergency situation. However, the current DIORAMA system is not perfect for all scenarios, for example, there are some outdoor environments do not …

Microphone Array, Aram Garibyan, Riley Stout

Electrical and Computer Engineering Senior Theses

Sound Localization is very useful for many real world applications, ranging from the military, to the fall detection of the elderly, to field biology. However, the purpose of our design was mainly a proof of concept. In this paper, we show the methods and algorithm we used to find a direction of arrival of a basic 1khz continuous sine wave. Our results show how a direction of sound can be calculated to a difficult yet condensed algorithm that was originally designed to triangulate cellular devices using cell towers. We have concluded that our margins of error have come from the …

Incorporating Histograms Of Oriented Gradients Into Monte Carlo Localization, Michael K. Norris Jun 2016

Incorporating Histograms Of Oriented Gradients Into Monte Carlo Localization, Michael K. Norris

Master's Theses

This work presents improvements to Monte Carlo Localization (MCL) for a mobile robot using computer vision. Solutions to the localization problem aim to provide fine resolution on location approximation, and also be resistant to changes in the environment. One such environment change is the kidnapped/teleported robot problem, where a robot is suddenly transported to a new location and must re-localize. The standard method of "Augmented MCL" uses particle filtering combined with addition of random particles under certain conditions to solve the kidnapped robot problem. This solution is robust, but not always fast. This work combines Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) …

Proactive Strategies In Personal Dose Monitoring, Prevention And Mitigation, Manish Kumar Sharma Jan 2016

Proactive Strategies In Personal Dose Monitoring, Prevention And Mitigation, Manish Kumar Sharma

Doctoral Dissertations

"At certain threshold, nuclear radiation (like x-rays and gamma-rays) may adversely impact the health of living tissues. The exposure to these radiations in nuclear facilities is measured by devices called dosimeters. The devices are generally worn on the torso and are monitored by health physics division to report the radiation dose received by the personnel. However, this approach is not proactive--since the dosimeters reflect the dose that has already been absorbed in the body of the wearer.

This work presents a scheme to proactively avoid large dose acquisition at radiation-prone facilities. The work was divided into three major segments: (i) …

A Novel Low Latency, High Resolution And Low Cost Time Synchronization, Ali Aghdaei Jan 2016

A Novel Low Latency, High Resolution And Low Cost Time Synchronization, Ali Aghdaei

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This report presents a new low latency, high resolution and low cost timing synchro- nization technique for digital receivers. Traditional timing synchronization employs Matched filter to perform cross-correlation operation and estimate Time-of-Arrival (TOA) of the signal. Decreasing the latency of the traditional method through over- sampling leads to a higher complexity and it is not viable. Furthermore, to obtain a high-resolution TOA, an extensive bandwidth is required, which results in high system complexity. The proposed method uses single bit quantization to employ XNOR blocks instead of multiplier and accumulator (MAC) blocks in the traditional method. This substantially decreases complexity incorporating …

Localization And Mapping Of Unknown Locations And Tunnels With Unmanned Ground Vehicles, Doris Turnage Jan 2016

Localization And Mapping Of Unknown Locations And Tunnels With Unmanned Ground Vehicles, Doris Turnage

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The main goals of this research were to enhance a commercial off the shelf (COTS) software platform to support unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) exploring the complex environment of tunnels, to test the platform within a simulation environment, and to validate the architecture through field testing. Developing this platform will enhance the U. S. Army Engineering Research and Development Center’s (ERDC’s) current capabilities and create a safe and efficient autonomous vehicle to perform the following functions within tunnels: (1) localization (e.g., position tracking) and mapping of its environment, (2) traversing varied terrains, (3) sensing the environment for objects of interest, and …
