A Federated Architecture For Heuristics Packet Filtering In Cloud Networks, Ibrahim M. Waziri Jr Jan 2014

A Federated Architecture For Heuristics Packet Filtering In Cloud Networks, Ibrahim M. Waziri Jr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The rapid expansion in networking has provided tremendous opportunities to access an unparalleled amount of information. Everyone connects to a network to gain access and to share this information. However when someone connects to a public network, his private network and information becomes vulnerable to hackers and all kinds of security threats. Today, all networks needs to be secured, and one of the best security policies is firewall implementation.

Firewalls can be hardware or cloud based. Hardware based firewalls offer the advantage of faster response time, whereas cloud based firewalls are more flexible. In reality the best form of firewall …

Water And Nutrient Reuse Within Closed Hydroponic Systems, Emerson Christie Jan 2014

Water And Nutrient Reuse Within Closed Hydroponic Systems, Emerson Christie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Currently, little research exists on the maintenance of individual nutrient balance within the nutrient solutions of closed hydroponic systems and how this maintenance may result in reductions in water and nutrient consumption. In this study, a nutrient solution management procedure was developed to maintain outputs while minimizing inputs. Lactuca sativa (lettuce) crops were grown in six closed hydroponic systems utilizing the nutrient film technique. Electrical conductivity was used as the primary indicator of nutrient solution quality and determined if the nutrient solution was discarded and replaced (control systems) or restored (test systems). Restorations in test systems were made individually to …

Neuromodulation Based Control Of Autonomous Robots On A Cloud Computing Platform, Cameron Muhammad Jan 2014

Neuromodulation Based Control Of Autonomous Robots On A Cloud Computing Platform, Cameron Muhammad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, the advancement of neurobiologically plausible models and computer networking has resulted in new ways of implementing control systems on robotic platforms. The work presents a control approach based on vertebrate neuromodulation and its implementation on autonomous robots in the open-source, open-access environment of robot operating system (ROS). A spiking neural network (SNN) is used to model the neuromodulatory function for generating context based behavioral responses of the robots to sensory input signals. The neural network incorporates three types of neurons- cholinergic and noradrenergic (ACh/NE) neurons for attention focusing and action selection, dopaminergic (DA) neurons for rewards- and …

A Technical And Economic Feasibility Study Of Implementing A Microgrid At Georgia Southern University, Matthew S. Purser Jan 2014

A Technical And Economic Feasibility Study Of Implementing A Microgrid At Georgia Southern University, Matthew S. Purser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The performance and benefits of microgrids were considered, and the feasibility of implementing a microgrid for a portion of the Georgia Southern University campus assessed. The existing power delivery system was described and characterized to ascertain whether conversion to a microgrid would be both feasible and beneficial. Different types of distributed generation were considered for their appropriateness for use on campus. A detailed economic analysis of potential microgrid configurations was then performed using HOMER, and the results were presented in the form of recommended action and alternatives.

Design And Analysis Of Circularly Polarized Electrically Small Antennas, Jesse R. Ludwig Jan 2014

Design And Analysis Of Circularly Polarized Electrically Small Antennas, Jesse R. Ludwig

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A growing need for efficient wireless communication is prevalent in the world in which we live. From cell phones to television to GPS applications, wireless communications are vital in consumer electronics and military applications. In these applications, a miniaturized antenna is sometimes necessary for reducing overall size of the communication system. For many satellite based communication applications, circular polarization in antennas is needed for efficient communication. In this thesis, the miniaturization technique known as T-top loading is utilized on two novel antenna designs. One design is an electrically small, circularly polarized planar cross dipole and the other design is a …

Numerical Analysis Of Biodiesel Combustion In A Direct Injection Compression Ignition Engine, Kyle D. Morse Jan 2014

Numerical Analysis Of Biodiesel Combustion In A Direct Injection Compression Ignition Engine, Kyle D. Morse

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this work, simulations of the combustion reaction within an optical Sandia/Cummins N14 direct-injection compression ignition engine are conducted. First, validation of the spray model against liquid and vapor penetration data was conducted using a trial and error method. Secondly, the overall engine model was validated against pressure and temperature data across high and low temperature combustion regimes. The third phase of the work was focused on creating a combustion model for biodiesel. The fourth and final phase was to test the biodiesel combustion model in the pertinent combustion regimes. The agreement with common trends in emissions of biodiesel combustion …

Computational And Experimental Study On Vertical Axis Wind Turbine In Search For An Efficient Design, Mohammad M. Bashar Jan 2014

Computational And Experimental Study On Vertical Axis Wind Turbine In Search For An Efficient Design, Mohammad M. Bashar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Wind alone can fulfill most of the energy requirement of the world by its efficient conversion in to energy. Though Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) is more popular but needs high wind speed to generate energy. On the other hand Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) needs low wind speed and can be installed anywhere which are some of the reasons for this research. The main objective of this research is to improve the design and performance of VAWT to make it more attractive, efficient, durable and sustainable. For a VAWT the blades perform the main role to extract energy from …

Geotextile Tubes And Their Application To Dewatering, Kevin R. Morgan Jan 2014

Geotextile Tubes And Their Application To Dewatering, Kevin R. Morgan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Geotextile tubes are a proven cost-effective technology offering speed, efficiency, and minimal impact to the environment for dewatering of sediment or sludge from dredging operations. Common applications include: removal of solids from municipal water and waste water treatment, agricultural remediation, marine dredging operations, construction dewatering, and beach preservation and protection. Geotextile tubes are manufactured in a variety of configurations.

Geotextile tubes are used for a wide variety of environmental applications including dewatering and slurry containment. One of the most important design aspects of the tubes themselves is the ability to be flexible and expand and hold form under high pressure …

Evaluation Of Long Term Effects Of Erosion Due To Groin Placement In The Northern Yucatan Peninsula, Andrew V. Mahfood Jan 2014

Evaluation Of Long Term Effects Of Erosion Due To Groin Placement In The Northern Yucatan Peninsula, Andrew V. Mahfood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis documents the results of a study conducted to evaluate the long term effects of groin placement on beach re-nourishment and beach restoration in the Yucatan peninsula. The study includes the evaluation of six control points located on Chelem beach in Yucatan, Mexico, very close to the Progreso pier. The control points were set up in an active groin field to record data on the re-nourishment project covering the Chelem beach area. These erosion control groins were constructed as part of an experimental project to see how the adopted U.S. Army Corps of Engineers guidelines, for installing groins, affected …
