Continual overconsumption of single-use plastics has generated challenges of solid waste management across the United States. Common plastic waste management solutions, such as landfill, have caused the migration of contaminants into the environment consequently affecting not only the health of wildlife, but also that of human beings. Alternative strategies for the handling of single-use plastic such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), used in the food packaging industry, can ultimately help mitigate the noxious consequences of single-use plastics affecting entire ecosystems. This PhD dissertation research has developed a simple, miniaturized, sensitive, selective, reproducible, and disposable 3D (inkjet printed – additive manufacturing technology) gold (Au) plated electrochemical sensor (ECS) on shape memory polymer (SMP) for aqueous lead detection. This technology has shown promising performance in the application of electrochemical sensing (lead (II) detection) due to increased effective electrode surface area (7.25 mm^2 ± 0.15 mm^2) despite miniaturizing lateral surface area (4.19 mm^2). In the present study, Zea mays seedlings grown under nano Cu(OH)2 (nCu), bulk Cu(OH)2 (bCu), and ionic CuSO4 (iCu) compound exposure were harvested after six days. The nutritional profile was determined to be significantly disrupted in the roots by 1000 ppm bCu treatment, resulting in a 58.7% reduction in potassium compared to the control. In the shoots, a significant decrease of manganese was observed for 10 and 1000 ppm iCu treatments with 55.7% and 64.2% reductions, respectively. The overall protein content and catalase (CAT) enzymatic activity, however, remained unaffected in either roots or shoots, while an absence of polyphenol oxidase …

This project encompasses three different methods to fabricate syntactic foams using a PDMS matrix i.e., hollow spheres inclusion, pore generator leaching by solvent, and emulsion. The foam formation by using polysiloxane hollow spheres is done in a 3-step process. The first step is to create a core of polystyrene following a dispersion polymerization process. Magnesium (Mg) is a well-known reduction agent in metallurgy (more specifically, in metallothermy). Recently, magnesiothermic reduction of oxides has been used in self-propagating high-temperature synThesis (SHS) of advanced materials such as ultrahigh-temperature ceramics (UHTC). The magnesiothermic SHS has also been used for the conversion of silica (SiO2) to silicon-based materials for thermoelectric applications. However, since oxidation of Mg releases a lot of heat, the direct use of it as the reduction agent leads to excessively high temperatures and undesirable sintering of the products. The following body of work encompasses the synThesis, upscaling, additive manufacturing, and characterization of microspheres as functional fillers incorporated into polymer syntactic foams. Synthesizing microspheres permits control over morphology, dispersion of particles, and size while the use of direct write manufacturing allowed for the controllability of filler orientation. Two different syntactic foams were developed from similar methodologies: (1) a silicone syntactic foam (2) epoxy syntactic foam. The silicone epoxy foam showed an increasing in damping and elastic modulus. The epoxy syntactic foams showed an enhanced thermal and electrical properties.

From September 2012 to May 2015, a phenocam monitored the seaward edge of a protected mangrove forest. Calculated GCC revealed seasonal greening patterns of a mangrove species, Rhizophoa apiculata, and an overall increase in the GCC, suggesting mangrove expansion. In comparing temperature and precipitation effects, it was found that this particular mangrove species had a greening optima at temperatures between 28°C and 28.5°C, and greening and canopy development response lag time of 10 weeks in response to precipitation. Tree saplings were monitored and showed to grow by 50%, mostly during a three month period during the rainy season. The establishment …

Two-dimensional (2D) materials encompass a diverse array of properties from the metallic-like character of graphene to the semiconducting nature of many of the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) such as tungsten diselenide (WSe2). These materials exhibit intriguing interactions with incoming radiation which makes them interesting for electronics and optoelectronics, especially given the high electron mobility and the ballistic nature of the electronic transport under certain conditions. This research was performed to examine the physiological and biochemical effects of bare (nCeO2) and citric acid coated (nCeO2+CA) cerium oxide nanoparticles in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). Plants were germinated and grown to full maturity in soil amended with 0-500 mg/kg and periodically analyzed using ICP-OES/MS and other spectroscopic and biochemical techniques. Although Ce in tissues increased as the external nCeO2 increased, there were no visible signs of toxicity. In mature plants, nCeO2 induced developmental changes and altered nutritional quality (essential elements) in fruits. Characterization of crude oil and some of its refined products has always been a challenge in the refining industry. This is mainly due to the high molecular complexity of crude oil. In this research, Heavy and Light Resins extracted from Penn Grade crude oil were analyzed with a wide variety of techniques, ranging from X-Ray Diffraction, Electron Microscopy, Fourier Transformed Infrared, C-13 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, and chromatographic methods. Transition state computational studies of the sulfur removal from dibenzothiophene (DBT) molecule have herein been performed considering the Co9S8/MoS2 interface existing on unsupported Co/MoS2 catalysts. The linear synchronous transit (LST) and quadratic synchronous transit (QST) methods integrated in a density functional theory (DFT) program such as Dmol3 were used for the calculations of energy barriers of the transition states. These covalently bonded groups did enhance the solubility of MWCNTs in aqueous media as expected. Sodium sulfate can be recovered from a dilute solution by concentrating it by conventional water treatment techniques like reverse osmosis and electrodialysis; however, those processes also concentrate impurities like arsenic. The sodium sulfate would have commercial use if it can be recovered in an arsenic-free form. This study demonstrated that sodium sulfate could be separated from impurities using slow cooling crystallization in a novel apparatus developed and designed during the experimentation. Tungsten oxide (WO3) has been a subject of high interest for its unique properties, and recently for its importance in different types of industrial applications which ranges from non-emissive displays, optical, microelectronic, catalytic/photocatalytic, humidity, temperature, gas, and biosensor devices. In this study, WO3 and Ti doped thin films were prepared using radio frequency magnetron reactive sputtering at different substrate temperatures ranging from room temperature to 500 ºC in increments of 100 ºC.
