Electrical Analogue Computer For The Heat Pump, James Edward Goff Dec 1950

Electrical Analogue Computer For The Heat Pump, James Edward Goff

Masters Theses

(Taken from the Summary)

Because of the complex behavior of a cylindrical heat source-sink under intermittent operating conditions, analysis by analytical means is very difficult. Therefore an electrical analogy computer consisting of a distributed resistance capacitance model was designed and built. It was shown analytically that the behavior of this computer model was the same as that of the heat system. That the model was a true analogy is verified by the fact that data obtained from this model could be used to check certain heat flow problems previously solved by analytical means. Data were obtained for a …

Periodic Heat Flow In A Semi-Infinite Solid, Warren George Heidbrier Jan 1950

Periodic Heat Flow In A Semi-Infinite Solid, Warren George Heidbrier

Masters Theses

"The object of this investigation is to determine by analytical means the temperature within a homogeneous semi-infinite solid, as a function of time, while the solid is receiving heat periodically by radiation on its one flat surface. Periodic heat flow means that heat flow is a continuous function of time and repeats itself at regular intervals. A semi-infinite solid has only one bounding plane and extends to infinity in all other directions...Much of this work deals with the soil temperatures of the earth both at the surface and at various depths. The surface of the earth is subjected to daily …

Velocity Studies In A Vertical Pipe Flowing Full, Robert Franklin Tindall Jan 1950

Velocity Studies In A Vertical Pipe Flowing Full, Robert Franklin Tindall

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation is to install a hard drawn copper pipe approximately 1/2 inch in diameter, and approximately 35 feet long in a vertical position. The copper pipe is to have pressure takeoff points at various distances along the length of the pipe. The purpose of these takeoffs is to measure the pressure of the water at the point of takeoff in the pipe. The water is to be forced into the pipe, assisted by gravity, thereby causing a pressure of some measurable quanity [sic] greater than absolute zero pressure. The discharge was to be by volumetric measurement, …

Design And Test Of An Apparatus For Rate Measurements Of Rapid Gas Reactions, Erich Rolaff Jan 1950

Design And Test Of An Apparatus For Rate Measurements Of Rapid Gas Reactions, Erich Rolaff

Masters Theses

"The present study on rapid gas reactions was initiated with two main goals in view. The first objective was the development of equipment and methods for the treatment of problems arising in extremely rapid gas phase reactions. In recent years, with the advent of large scale applications of gas turbines and rocket motors, the process of high speed gas reactions, especially those of combustion and oxidation have become of increasing importance...The second main goal of the work was to apply the methods and equipment developed to the investigation of chemical systems of interest"--Introduction, page 1-2.

The Precipitation-Runoff Relationship On The Grand River Basin Of Missouri And Iowa, J. Kent Roberts Jan 1950

The Precipitation-Runoff Relationship On The Grand River Basin Of Missouri And Iowa, J. Kent Roberts

Masters Theses

"In the study of a drainage basin which is to be utilized for water supply or water power, there is frequently a dearth or complete lack of runoff data, though precipitation data are almost always available. The Water Resources Branch of the United States Geological Survey maintains gaging stations on various streams and runoff records from these streams are available from their publications and offices. Many of these runoff records cover a considerable number of years, and are entirely sufficient for use in an analysis of any drainage basin covered by such data. Some of these gaging stations have not …

Rockbursts, Christian Maurice Colson Jan 1950

Rockbursts, Christian Maurice Colson

Masters Theses

"This paper does not pretend to originality; it is an attempt to bring to light the causes and the mechanism of rockbursts, as exposed in the literature. Furthermore, an endeavor has been made to give a comprehensive picture of the prediction, prevention, and control methods of rockbursts. Briefly, what has been done in the field of rockbursts, and what remains open to investigation is submitted to the reader. The choice of rockbursts as a thesis subject appears to be justified by the geologic interest of the question. Detailed geologic observations, and particularly the recording of all the structural features which …

Efficiency Studies Of The Effect Of Moisture On The Power Consumption Of Mine Scrapers, Georges J. Vigier Jan 1950

Efficiency Studies Of The Effect Of Moisture On The Power Consumption Of Mine Scrapers, Georges J. Vigier

Masters Theses

"Many years of practice have resulted in the standardization of several types of scrapers which are now commonly manufactured for use in mining. Although experience has brought out much information on scraping operations, no systematic studies of the efficiency of mine scrapers have been carried out before the experimental works done in the last few years at Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy. "Purpose of Problem": The purpose of this present study is to consider the effect which moisture in the muck has on the efficiency as regards power consumption and amount of material scraped, of different types of mine …

Effects Of Higher Speed Explosives In Drift Rounds, Harve Preston Nelson Jan 1950

Effects Of Higher Speed Explosives In Drift Rounds, Harve Preston Nelson

Masters Theses

"There is much still to be learned of what takes place in the actual explosive zone of a rock blast. Many factors, both known and unknown, have individual and collective effects. A program is now in progress by the Mining Department of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy for developing and preserving information about some of the factors affecting the use of explosives. Some work has been done. More is now being completed by Messrs. R. J. Jones and J. B. H. Fitz-William. Present plans call for continuing the research and gathering data on this subject which is so important …

Calibration Of Weirs By Means Of Critical Flow And Specific Energy, Robert A. Rapp Jan 1950

Calibration Of Weirs By Means Of Critical Flow And Specific Energy, Robert A. Rapp

Masters Theses

"For many years man has been relying more each day upon metering devices to measure the flow of fluids in industry. The orifice, orifice meter, venturi meter, pitot tube, nozzle, flume and the weir have been employed, each having its own particular advantage.

In this parade of metering progress, the contracted weir has long been the forgotten brother of the suppressed weir. In almost every textbook on hydraulics or fluid mechanics, the following words appear, "end contractions are to be avoided where the weir cannot be calibrated". This skepticism and the length or absurdity of some contracted weir formulas led …

The Transformation Of The Aluminum-Zinc Eutectoid Alloy At Subcritical Temperatures, Thomas Joseph Burke Jan 1950

The Transformation Of The Aluminum-Zinc Eutectoid Alloy At Subcritical Temperatures, Thomas Joseph Burke

Masters Theses

"Interest in the mechanism of the austenite eutectoid transformation in iron-carbon alloys, especially as produced by the isothermal sub-critical techniques introduced by Davenport and Bain, has resulted in the application of similar heat treatment studies to the eutectoid transformations in other alloy systems. The study of the eutectoid transformation is of both fundamental and industrial interest because past experience has shown that these studies yielded much information concerning the nature and mechanism of the changes in eutectoid alloys during the decomposition of the phase stable at high temperatures and has also contributed much toward the development of new properties to …

Safety And Health In Mining, John Philip Lacke Jan 1950

Safety And Health In Mining, John Philip Lacke

Masters Theses

"The mining industry has long been criticised severely because of its high rate of accident occurrence. Statistics, which, however, are not strictly comparable show that the accident-frequency rate in all mining is currently about three times and the accident severity rate is about seven times as great as the average for general industrial work in the United States. Figures such as these are by no means comforting to mining men. They constitute a challenge to the industry that cannot be ignored.

It must be remembered that any type of mining is more hazardous than most or the other major occupations. …

Economical Span Length Ratios For Three-Span Continuous Girder Bridges, Donald Hindrik Timmer Jan 1950

Economical Span Length Ratios For Three-Span Continuous Girder Bridges, Donald Hindrik Timmer

Masters Theses

"The three-span continuous bridge is one of the most popular bridges used by highway departments at the present time. The low first cost and overall economy combined with the pleasing appearance of this type of bridge as compared to simple span structures has led most highway departments to use continuous spans whenever conditions permit. The design of three-span continuous bridges, as well as the design of any of the other bridge types, is usually carried out as an analysis rather than a design. In the case of the three-span continuous girder, with rolled steel beams, an initial assumption as to …

Effects Of Wave Action Upon The Design Of The Breakwater For Istanbul Harbor, Melih Suat Durusan Jan 1950

Effects Of Wave Action Upon The Design Of The Breakwater For Istanbul Harbor, Melih Suat Durusan

Masters Theses

"The city of Istanbul is situated on the southern entrance of the Bosphorus which separates Asia from Europe; at the same time it is the only strait that leads to the Black Sea. Istanbul is the city that connects Europe-Asia highways and railways. These features show that Istanbul is a very important port. The Golden Horn and the southern end of the Bosphorus constitute a natural harbor which has been in use for many years. Although the natural harbor has served its purpose in the past, the present conditions necessitate the presence of a new harbor...One economical method of improving …

The Potassium Tungsten Bronzes, Ching Hou Ma Jan 1950

The Potassium Tungsten Bronzes, Ching Hou Ma

Masters Theses

"The tungsten bronzes are a series of substitutional solid solutions of alkali or alkaline earth metatungstates and tungstic oxides. They are not really metallic alloys or intermetallic compounds but they possess some marked metallic properties such as metallic luster, good electric conductivity, high specific gravity, etc. For this reason the name of "bronzes" is applied to them"--Introduction, page 1.

Grouting And Freezing Unconsolidated And Water-Bearing Strata, Robert Walter Heins Jan 1950

Grouting And Freezing Unconsolidated And Water-Bearing Strata, Robert Walter Heins

Masters Theses

"The process of grouting has undergone many changes in recent years. A definition must, therefore, be inclusive. "Grouting" is the process of injecting, under pressure, into soil and rock through boreholes or other openings, any solution or suspension containing materials that harden, stiffen, or swell in void spaces to produce a solid or semi-solid impermeable mass. Various cements, chemicals, asphalts and clays are the materials used in the grouting process. The use of tailings is also considered a type of grouting, since some hardening or stiffening takes place. Cement grout relies on chemical reaction to bring about setting or hardening …

Hydraulic Scale For Measurement Of Dynamometer And Other Forces, John Richard Barton Jan 1950

Hydraulic Scale For Measurement Of Dynamometer And Other Forces, John Richard Barton

Masters Theses

"The object of this investigation is to design, build, test, and develop, a hydraulic type scale primarily to be used for measuring dynamometer forces. The scale however is not limited to use on dynamometers, but may be used for other types of force measurements such as the continuous weighing of material on a conveyor belt in conjunction with a recording pressure gage. The scale has numerous applications in determining forces where conventional scales are now used. This particular subject was chosen because of the need for a convenient, inexpensive, and accurate scale for use in measuring the force exerted by …

The Nature Of Molecular Films Of Oleic Acid On Quartz, Kenneth Lee Keating Jan 1950

The Nature Of Molecular Films Of Oleic Acid On Quartz, Kenneth Lee Keating

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this research was to show the nature of oleic acid on quartz mineral by transferring calcium oleate films, known to be monomolecular and of a definite orientation, to the surface of a piece of quartz, and measuring the resulting coated mineral by contact angle technique"--Introduction, page 1.

A Comparative Study Of Some Rock Drill Bits, Charles Roger Knopp Jan 1950

A Comparative Study Of Some Rock Drill Bits, Charles Roger Knopp

Masters Theses

"The detachable single-use rick-drill bit has attracted considerable attention in the mining industry of the United States during the past few years. While this type of bit has been used for some time in other countries, it has been only recently that these bits have been manufactured in the United States. It was decided to test this type of bit and make a comparative study of a single-use bit and a widely used detachable rock-drill bit"--Introduction, page 1.

Effect Of Removed Web-Section On Critical Load For I-Beam Columns, Henri Simon Rigo Jan 1950

Effect Of Removed Web-Section On Critical Load For I-Beam Columns, Henri Simon Rigo

Masters Theses

"This investigation deals with a series of column tests of aluminum I-sections which have a perforated web. Specifically, the tests show that the weight is decreased without decrease in strength. Several basic assumptions are made in the design of a column. The physical action of a column is idealized in the derivation of formulae which will predict within reasonable limits the load which the member will sustain. In a given installation of non-homogeneity of material, kinks, uneven bearing, lack of symmetry due to riveting or welding, stress concentration and many other disturbing factors not in agreement with these assumptions may …

The Development Of Plans For A National Airport For Ankara, Turkey, Mehmet Ragip Samli Jan 1950

The Development Of Plans For A National Airport For Ankara, Turkey, Mehmet Ragip Samli

Masters Theses

"'The present rapid development of general interest in aviation has brought to the front a new field of engineering. Development of the airplane has already reached a stage where the limit of its usefulness seems fixed only by the places which may be provided for taking off and landing. Due to the newness of the problem, not every one on whom responsibility rests recognizes the fact that the selection of the proper site and location for an airport is just as much an engineering problem as are its design and construction.'

The Turkish government began construction or the Ankara-Esenboga airport …

Analytical Investigation Of Bending Effects On The Stability Of A Tube Subjected To External Pressure, Charles Young Jan 1950

Analytical Investigation Of Bending Effects On The Stability Of A Tube Subjected To External Pressure, Charles Young

Masters Theses

"The behavior of thin and moderately thick-walled tubes under various types of loadings has been a major problem of several leading industries for many years. Predominant among these, and the one for which this thesis was primarily undertaken, is the oil industry. The problem attacked in this thesis, however, is not limited to that industry alone, having ample application in industries that are sub-marine in nature, or any industry in which the application of external pressures on equipment is likely to be responsible for buckling failures...In this thesis, the problem of finding the effect of bending on the collapsing pressure …

The Effect Of Pressure Prehydration On The Strength Of Hydraulic Cement Concrete, Thomas Holmes Whitfield Jr. Jan 1950

The Effect Of Pressure Prehydration On The Strength Of Hydraulic Cement Concrete, Thomas Holmes Whitfield Jr.

Masters Theses

"It appears that the rapidity of curing and the degree or ultimate strength of concrete can be influenced by both chemical and physical factors. The main function of the physical factors involved seems to be the creating of a more intimate combination of the cement and water which are the active ingredients. For example, finer grinding of the cement would present more surface area to the water; the application of heat would decrease the amount of surface tension of the water, in addition to speeding the chemical reaction, steam under pressure would force water into the porous particles of cement; …

The Application Of The Relaxation Method To The Solution Of Steady-State Heat Transfer Through A Concentric Square Insulator, William Edward Simpkin Jan 1950

The Application Of The Relaxation Method To The Solution Of Steady-State Heat Transfer Through A Concentric Square Insulator, William Edward Simpkin

Masters Theses

"It is the object of this thesis to express the relationship between the heat transfer through a square insulator of variable inside-outside dimension ratios, in terms of a concentric round insulator of the same inside-outside diameter ration, by means of a continuous curve. Mathematically speaking, this thesis will have a plot of a variable coefficient, cs, to be used...in terms of the ratio of the width of the outside square to the width of the inside square"--Statement of Problem, page 8.

Effect Of Unionism On Cost Of Coal, Subrahmanya Padmanabhan Jan 1950

Effect Of Unionism On Cost Of Coal, Subrahmanya Padmanabhan

Masters Theses

"Coal is not only the base of our civilization and a key to our continued high standard of living but it is also playing a leading part in the recovery of Europe and other backward nations of the world. Our dependency upon coal as a basic source of energy is growing greater and greater every day. Some day atomic power may be our principal source of energy but the list of technical obstacles that block the way for widespread and commercial use of atomic energy is a long one. Unlike its competitors, such as petroleum and natural gas, the reserves …

Solid Solution In The Series Sodium Tungsten Bronze, Lithium Tungsten Bronze And Tungstic Oxide, Godrej F. Doctor Jan 1950

Solid Solution In The Series Sodium Tungsten Bronze, Lithium Tungsten Bronze And Tungstic Oxide, Godrej F. Doctor

Masters Theses

"The tungsten bronzes are a series of anionic substitutional solid solutions of alkali metal metatungstates and tungstic oxide. They are neither alloys nor intermetallic compounds, the term tungsten bronzes was adopted because of their remarkable metallic properties, e.g. luster, specific gravity and especially high electrical conductivity, which resembles to that of graphite. Due to its chemical inactivity and beautiful shades of color, it is used as a coating, especially in the plastic industry and for other ornamental products. The properties and the structure of these bronzes have not been investigated entirely satisfactory; within the last twenty years, only a few …

Separation Of Cobalt From Zinc Sulfate Solutions By Synthetic Cation Exchange Resins, Wen-Hsiang Chang Jan 1950

Separation Of Cobalt From Zinc Sulfate Solutions By Synthetic Cation Exchange Resins, Wen-Hsiang Chang

Masters Theses

"The purpose of the present research is primarily to investigate the possibility of the separation and recovery of cobalt from zinc sulfate solutions by means of cation exchange resins. It is thought that such an investigation, seemingly of academic interest, might throw some light on determining the possibility of processing some industrial solutions containing both cobalt and zinc. Cobalt, for instance, has been well known as one of the most detrimental impurities in zinc electrolytic solutions. In spite of various purification treatments, small amounts of cobalt are often present in the electrolytic solution, causing a reduction in current efficiency and …

The Theory Of Limit Design As Applied To Column Analysis, John Francis Mccarthy Jan 1950

The Theory Of Limit Design As Applied To Column Analysis, John Francis Mccarthy

Masters Theses

"In any discussion of compression members of a structure, account has to be taken primarily of the relative "slenderness" or bending weakness of the member. If the member be so short that axial loading causes very slight deflection at any point throughout the member, it is usually designated a simple compression member and no account is taken of the additional stresses due to the deflection. When, however, the ratio of the length to the least radius of gyration of the member becomes so large that bending stresses cannot be ignored, the member is usually called a column and its consequent …

A Determination Of The Economic Feasibility Of Producing Marginal Gas Wells, Horace Tharp Mann Jan 1950

A Determination Of The Economic Feasibility Of Producing Marginal Gas Wells, Horace Tharp Mann

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation is to show that it is economically feasible to produce marginal gas wells in such a manner that all the gas from the edge of the field will be captured by the first row of wells. In this problem the permeability of the sand is to be variable but known, and the effects of this variable permeability on the pressure distribution, and resulting gas production, will be discussed.

In many gas fields the point at which it is generally considered unprofitable to drill new wells is well inside the boundary of the reservoir. This is …
