Design And Fabrication Of A Trapped Ion Quantum Computing Testbed, Christopher A. Caron Aug 2023

Design And Fabrication Of A Trapped Ion Quantum Computing Testbed, Christopher A. Caron

Masters Theses

Here we present the design, assembly and successful ion trapping of a room-temperature ion trap system with a custom designed and fabricated surface electrode ion trap, which allows for rapid prototyping of novel trap designs such that new chips can be installed and reach UHV in under 2 days. The system has demonstrated success at trapping and maintaining both single ions and cold crystals of ions. We achieve this by fabricating our own custom surface Paul traps in the UMass Amherst cleanroom facilities, which are then argon ion milled, diced, mounted and wire bonded to an interposer which is placed …

Planar Ultra-Wideband Modular Antenna (Puma) Arrays For High-Volume Manufacturing On Organic Laminates And Bga Interfaces, James R. Lacroix

Masters Theses

This work proposes wideband and broadband Planar Ultra-wideband Modular Antenna (PUMA) arrays designed to improve cost and reliability for high production volume commercial and military applications. The designs feature simplified PCB stack-ups with high dielectric constant (Dk) dimensionally stable materials to improve the manufacturing cost and yield. Additionally, the packages use ball grid array (BGA) interconnects, commonly used in digital electronics, for simple solder reflow integration with radio frequency (RF) electronics. While high Dk materials present practical manufacturing benefits, theoretical background will show how and why PUMA arrays lose frequency bandwidth and scan volume with high Dk materials. Further, a …

Optimization And Modeling Of Esd Protection Devices, Li Shen Jan 2022

Optimization And Modeling Of Esd Protection Devices, Li Shen

Masters Theses

“Transient voltage suppressors (TVS) are used to protect ICs (integrated circuits) against overvoltage, ESD (Electrostatic Discharge), inductive load switching, and even lightning strikes. In this research, a transient behavior model framework for ESD protection devices is used for modelling four different types of TVS (non-snapback, snapback, spark gap like device and varistor). The System-Efficient ESD Design (SEED) methodology is utilized to strengthen the trust in the model framework by efficient simulation of ESD interaction of the off-chip ESD protection devices with the IC ESD protection device and associated measurement data.

Improvements in the TVS transient response, accounting for conductivity modulation, …

Modeling And Characterization Of Optical Metasurfaces, Mahsa Torfeh Oct 2021

Modeling And Characterization Of Optical Metasurfaces, Mahsa Torfeh

Masters Theses

Metasurfaces are arrays of subwavelength meta-atoms that shape waves in a compact and planar form factor. During recent years, metasurfaces have gained a lot of attention due to their compact form factor, easy integration with other devices, multi functionality and straightforward fabrication using conventional CMOS techniques. To provide and evaluate an efficient metasurface, an optimized design, high resolution fabrication and accurate measurement is required. Analysis and design of metasurfaces require accurate methods for modeling their interactions with waves. Conventional modeling techniques assume that metasurfaces are locally periodic structures excited by plane waves, restricting their applicability to gradually varying metasurfaces that …

Seed Modeling Of An Esd Gun Discharge To A Usb Cable, Yang Xu Jan 2021

Seed Modeling Of An Esd Gun Discharge To A Usb Cable, Yang Xu

Masters Theses

“An IC protected by a transient voltage suppression (TVS) diode may fail if the TVS device does not turn on or does not turn on quickly enough, causing the IC to take the full brunt of the electrostatic discharge (ESD) event. Transient simulation models have been developed for ESD protection devices for the purpose of system-efficient ESD design (SEED). The TVS modeling methodology has been improved to better represent the physics that occurs during the TVS response and more accurately predict the interactions between off-chip and on-chip protection devices. Moreover, a complicated test scenario -- an ESD gun discharge through …

Serdes Channel Crosstalk Mitigation Methodology With Industrial Implementation Guidance, Junda Wang Jan 2020

Serdes Channel Crosstalk Mitigation Methodology With Industrial Implementation Guidance, Junda Wang

Masters Theses

"With the increasing data rate of digital circuits, the differential crosstalk degrades the signal integrity performance in PCBs drastically. Usually, in the trace area, crosstalk can be isolated by stitching vias and adding shielding ground vias can also shield coupling in the ball gate array (BGA) and pin field area. The traditional way to mitigation crosstalk in the BGA and pin field area through adding more ground vias between signal pairs or increasing the spacing in between, it demonstrated us the efficiency on crosstalk cancellation efficiency but it also increases the size of products and it would be contradictory to …

The Umass Experimental X-Band Radar (Umaxx): An Upgrade Of The Casa Ma-1 To Support Cross-Polarization Measurements, Jezabel Vilardell Sanchez

Masters Theses

Ground-based radars are instruments commonly used to surveil the precipitation climate of the surrounding areas. Weather events are characterized by collecting backscatter data and analyzing computed products such as the Reflectivity Factor, the Doppler Velocity, the Spectrum Width, the Differential Reflectivity, the Co-polar Correlation Coefficient and the Differential Propagation Phase. The ability of the radar to transmit different polarization waves, such as horizontal and vertical polarization, allow for further analysis of the weather given the capability to perform co-polar and cross-polar measurements. The Linear Depolarization Ratio is another computed product based on the difference in power between the co-polarized and …

Estimating Electromagnetic Emissions From A Site Installation With Multiple Racks Of Server Equipment, Ze Sun Jan 2019

Estimating Electromagnetic Emissions From A Site Installation With Multiple Racks Of Server Equipment, Ze Sun

Masters Theses

“There are hundreds, sometimes even thousands, of servers working simultaneously inside a data center. Their radiation can be a problem and cause EMI issues. However, it is not feasible to perform full-wave simulation of these racks because of the large electric size of the model. In this thesis, an algorithm is proposed to predict the emission form rack array. The equivalent dipole source is extracted from EMI measurement data of a single rack and used as the radiation source in the multiple rack model. The coupling between racks cannot be ignored, but through the simulation, it is also found that …

Experimental Characterization Of Common-Mode Sources For Prediction Of System Level Common-Mode Current On Cable Harnesses, Sameer Sudha Arun Walunj

Masters Theses

"Common-mode current on cable harnesses is often the primary source of radiated emissions below several hundred megahertz. It is difficult, however, to estimate common-mode currents that will occur in a system from component level tests because the common-mode impedances are different in the system. Research presents two methods for using simple component level tests to estimate equivalent common-mode source voltages and source impedances responsible for generating common-mode current. Key to these methods is assuming the harness can be represented with two transmission lines, one terminated with a short and one with an open. Equivalent sources are predicted for those circuits …

Coupling Path Visualization Based On Reciprocity Theorem, Yang Zhong Jan 2019

Coupling Path Visualization Based On Reciprocity Theorem, Yang Zhong

Masters Theses

"A new method to visualize coupling path is proposed to help solve EMI problems. Based on the reciprocity theorem and the concept of reaction, coupling coefficient (CC) is defined to characterize coupling power density. For two-port networks, surface integral of CC can represent coupled voltage on the open-circuited port or coupled power on the loaded port. For dipole-moment based systems, surface integral of CC can represent coupled field components. The calculated CC should be a complex scalar at each point. By properly adjusting the excitation phases, the imaginary part of surface integral of CC will be zero and thus can …

Passively-Coded Embedded Microwave Sensors For Materials Characterization And Structural Health Monitoring (Shm), Katelyn Rose Brinker

Masters Theses

"Monitoring and maintaining civil, space, and aerospace infrastructure is an ongoing critical problem facing our nation. As new complex materials and structures, such as multilayer composites and inflatable habitats, become ubiquitous, performing inspection of their structural integrity becomes even more challenging. Thus, novel nondestructive testing (NDT) methods are needed. Chipless RFID is a relatively new technology that has the potential to address these needs. Chipless RFID tags have the advantage of being wireless and passive, meaning that they do not require a power source or an electronic chip. They can also be used in a variety of sensing applications including …

Near-Field Scanning Based Shielding Effectiveness Extraction For Board Level Shielding Cans, Harsh Shrivastav Jan 2019

Near-Field Scanning Based Shielding Effectiveness Extraction For Board Level Shielding Cans, Harsh Shrivastav

Masters Theses

"The conventional definition of shielding effectiveness is well suited for calculating electromagnetic shielding in the far-field. However, in the near field, shielding effectiveness calculation is not so straight forward. In radio frequency interference problems, most of the field coupling occurs in near field. Having a well-defined method to calculate near-field shielding effectiveness is important for estimating the suppression of radio frequency interference using the shield cans. In this research, a method to extract the shielding effectiveness of board level shielding cans using near field scanning is developed. Shielding effectiveness is defined by modelling the shielded noise source as equivalent dipole …

Microwave Detection Of Surface Breaking Cracks In Metallic Structures Under Heavy Corrosion And Paint, John Robert Gallion Jan 2019

Microwave Detection Of Surface Breaking Cracks In Metallic Structures Under Heavy Corrosion And Paint, John Robert Gallion

Masters Theses

"We live in the world of "aging infrastructures". In this environment, critical and heavily utilized infrastructure, i.e. ships, planes, bridges, etc., are operating at or beyond their designed age. Replacement is no longer an option and "retirement for cause" is the current approach to maintenance and replacement. Consequently, there is an ever-increasing demand for efficient and robust nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods that can determine the physical health of these structures. Large structures, which are primarily made of metals, either steel or aluminum, are susceptible to high-stress cracking and corrosion. Stress-induced cracks in heavily corroded steel, used in bridges, railroads, storage …

Practical Methods For Source Separation In Emc Measurements, Yuanzhuo Liu Jan 2019

Practical Methods For Source Separation In Emc Measurements, Yuanzhuo Liu

Masters Theses

"Electromagnetic emission is critical in the electronic industry with the rapid growth of the development of the electronic device. To identify the emission from the multipule sources, two methods are proposed in the near field scan and total radiated power measurement respectively.

The first method can be applied in the measurement of the field generated by multiple non-correlated sources. The contribution of each source is determined using a blind source separation (BSS) technique. The measurements are performed using one scanning probe and stationary reference probes, avoiding the need to measure the spatial correlations of the random field. The resolving result …

Developing A Methodology For Estimating The Growth Of Radiated Emission From Multi-Modular Systems, Kaustav Ghosh

Masters Theses

"The large multiscale problems are commonly faced in real-world applications such as analysis of electromagnetic interference for a printed circuit board installed on a large platform with connected cables, wires and other high speed interfaces. EMI problems are not uncommon in high speed systems which involve multiple modules of complex hardware. As the system clock frequency and data rate increases, so does the challenges in controlling the EMI in such systems. The costs to prototype and to develop networking equipment are growing as a result of increasing complexities and densities. EMC regulations require radiated emission testing to be done in …

Tvs Transient Behavior Modeling Method, And System-Level Effective Esd Design For Usb3.X Interface, Pengyu Wei Jan 2018

Tvs Transient Behavior Modeling Method, And System-Level Effective Esd Design For Usb3.X Interface, Pengyu Wei

Masters Theses

"This research proposal presents a methodology whereby a protection device can be modeled in SPICE compatible platforms with respect to the transient behaviors during Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) events. This methodology uses an exclusively "black-box" approach to characterize the parameters of the protection device, thereby allowing it to be implemented without intimate knowledge of the DUT. Results of this methodology can be used to predict the transient response (conductivity modulation and snapback delay) of the ESD protection devices, and thereby predicts how much current could flow into the device (typically a digital IO pin) under protection. The transient behavior modeling methodology …

Kasi: A Ka-Band And S-Band Cross-Track Interferometer, Gerard Ruiz Carregal

Masters Theses

A dual-frequency system is needed to better understand natural processes that constitute the environment and seasonal cycles of the Earth. A system working at two different wavelengths acquiring data simultaneously will give a valuable dataset since the conditions on the ground will be exactly the same. Hence, elements such as wind, soil moisture or any other changes on the ground will not interfere in the mea- surements. This thesis explains how an S-band radar was built and tested. Moreover, the experiments done with a Ka-band radar used as a scatterometer are explained as well as the data processing and analysis. …

A Physics-Based Approach For Power Integrity In Multi-Layered Pcbs, Biyao Zhao Jan 2017

A Physics-Based Approach For Power Integrity In Multi-Layered Pcbs, Biyao Zhao

Masters Theses

"Developing a power distribution network (PDN) for ASICs and ICs to achieve the low-voltage ripple specifications for current digital designs is challenging with the high-speed and low-voltage ICs. Present methods are typically guided by best engineering practices for low impedance looking into the PDN from the IC. A pre-layout design methodology for power integrity in multi-layered PCB PDN geometry is proposed in the thesis. The PCB PDN geometry is segmented into four parts and every part is modelled using different methods based on the geometry details of the part. Physics-based circuit models are built for every part and the four …

Application Of Embedded Frequency Selective Surfaces For Structural Health Monitoring, Dustin Franklin Pieper Jan 2016

Application Of Embedded Frequency Selective Surfaces For Structural Health Monitoring, Dustin Franklin Pieper

Masters Theses

"This thesis proposes the use of Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSSs) as an embedded structural health monitoring (SHM) sensor. FSSs are periodic arrays of conductive elements that filter certain frequencies of incident electromagnetic radiation. The behavior of this filter is heavily dependent on the geometry of the FSS and local environment. Therefore, by monitoring how this filtering response changes when the geometric or environmental changes take place, information about those changes may be determined. In previous works, FSS-based sensing has shown promise for sensing normal strain (a stretching or compressing geometrical deformation). This concept is extended in this thesis by investigating …

Intensity Control Of Dielectric Barrier Discharge Filaments, Matthew Crawford Paliwoda Jan 2016

Intensity Control Of Dielectric Barrier Discharge Filaments, Matthew Crawford Paliwoda

Masters Theses

"When operated in a filamentary mode, a volume dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) is known to produce patterned plasma structures. These structures are currently being explored for reconfigurable metamaterial applications. In this work the presence and intensity of a single filament, within an array of filaments, was controlled by adjusting the voltage to that filament's individual needle electrode. The current, voltage, and time-averaged normalized light intensity were measured while varying the voltage of the needle through a self-biasing resistance. For a 7.5 kV, 3.2 kHz DBD in air, the needle-controlled filament intensity varies from that of the surrounding filaments to zero …

Mitigation Of Glass Weave Skew Using A Combination Of Low Dk Spread Glass, Multi-Ply Dielectric And Routing Direction, Kartheek Nalla Jan 2016

Mitigation Of Glass Weave Skew Using A Combination Of Low Dk Spread Glass, Multi-Ply Dielectric And Routing Direction, Kartheek Nalla

Masters Theses

"As the data rates increase into the multi-gigabit range, the bit periods fall in the range of few tens of picoseconds. At above few Gbps, it becomes very important to reduce skew between differential pairs as it can adversely impact the signal eye and thereby increase bit error rate. The goal of this study is to mitigate the skew contributed by woven glass fabric of PCB dielectrics.

The glass weave skew between differential pairs in a PCB occurs due to the difference in dielectric constants (DK) of glass and resin. This thesis aims to mitigate the skew by reducing the …

Esd Related Soft Error Detection And Root Cause Analysis, Suyu Yang

Masters Theses

"In this article, several methods are outlined for detecting functional changes in an IC due to external interference such as ESD or EMI. The goal is to provide diagnostic tools for detection of potential soft failure susceptibilities of complex systems during the hardware design stage without the aid of any complex software. After the soft errors are found, circuit modeling techniques are used to characterize the DUT. By running the circuit model, the soft error threshold can be predicted and the circuit model can be used to evaluate the performance of other ESD protection methods. In the end several methods …

Study Jitter Amplification Of A Passive Channel And Investigation Of S₂₁ Magnitude Extraction Methodologies Using A Pattern Generator And Oscilloscope, Xinyun Guo Jan 2016

Study Jitter Amplification Of A Passive Channel And Investigation Of S₂₁ Magnitude Extraction Methodologies Using A Pattern Generator And Oscilloscope, Xinyun Guo

Masters Theses

"Recently the clock channel jitter amplification has been observed in several publications. Currently in many high-speed I/O systems, to avoid the cost and the complex clock recovery circuit design, people use traces forwarding clock signal from transmitting IC to receiving IC. When these clock traces are long enough, the amount of attenuation will induce not only inter-symbol-interference (ISI) but also modulate with the input jitter. Eventually it will lead some type of jitter been amplified after the channel. Similarly, the high speed communication channel (data channel) will also face this issue. Since there are no studies on the jitter amplification …
