Novel Control Of Pv Solar Farms As Statcom (Pv-Statcom) For Frequency Control And Power Oscillation Damping, Mohammad Akbari Kelishadi Nov 2019

Novel Control Of Pv Solar Farms As Statcom (Pv-Statcom) For Frequency Control And Power Oscillation Damping, Mohammad Akbari Kelishadi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Frequency stability and low-frequency power oscillations are two major concerns in modern power systems. PV-STATCOM is a patented concept which enables PV inverters to provide STATCOM functions, during day and night, as well as real power modulation during daytime. This thesis aims to utilize PV-STATCOM capability effectively for enhancing frequency stability and power oscillations damping.

A novel, simultaneous real power-based Fast Frequency Response (FFR) and reactive power-based Power Oscillation Damping (POD) control is proposed for PV-STATCOMs. This control not only significantly reduces system under- and over-frequency deviations, but also uses the unutilized capacity of PV inverters to enhance damping of …

Novel Pv Solar Farm Control As Statcom (Pv-Statcom) For Ssr Mitigation In Synchronous Generators And Wind Farms, Reza Salehi Sharafdarkolaee Nov 2019

Novel Pv Solar Farm Control As Statcom (Pv-Statcom) For Ssr Mitigation In Synchronous Generators And Wind Farms, Reza Salehi Sharafdarkolaee

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Transmission lines across the world are extensively compensated by series capacitors to increase their power transfer capacity. However, series compensation can potentially cause subsynchronous resonance (SSR) which can lead to significant damage in shafts of synchronous generators and wind farms. Dynamic reactive power compensators such as STATCOM and SVCs are typically used for mitigation of SSR, but these are quite expensive.

Large scale PV solar farms are growing at a very rapid rate across the world. It is quite likely that they may get installed near synchronous generators or wind farms which are directly or indirectly interfaced with series compensated …

Novel Night And Day Control Of A Pv Solar System As A Statcom (Pv-Statcom) For Damping Of Power Oscillations, Hesamaldin Maleki Oct 2017

Novel Night And Day Control Of A Pv Solar System As A Statcom (Pv-Statcom) For Damping Of Power Oscillations, Hesamaldin Maleki

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Installations of large scale PV solar farms are rapidly increasing, worldwide. This is causing a growing apprehension that inertialess power injections from these inverter based generators will result in a decline in power system stability. Instead, this thesis presents novel applications of a patent pending technology whereby the PV solar farms actually help significantly increase system stability. A novel 24/7 (night and day) control of a large-scale PV solar farm as a dynamic reactive power compensator STATCOM, termed PV-STATCOM, is presented for damping low-frequency electromechanical power oscillations resulting in a significant improvement in power transfer capability of existing power transmission …

Smart Pv Inverter Control For Distribution Systems, Ehsan M. Siavashi Aug 2015

Smart Pv Inverter Control For Distribution Systems, Ehsan M. Siavashi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

PV solar systems employ inverters to transform dc power from solar panels into ac power for injecting into the power grids. Inverters that perform multiple functions in addition to real power production are known as “smart inverters”.

This thesis presents a novel control of PV inverter as a dynamic reactive power compensator – STATCOM. This “smart PV inverter” control enables a PV solar inverter to operate in three modes – i) Full PV, ii) Partial STATCOM, and iii) Full STATCOM, depending upon system needs. The novel control is developed and demonstrated for the objectives of a) symmetrical voltage regulation, b) …

Comprehensive Statcom Control For Distribution And Transmission System Applications, Shubham Gupta Aug 2014

Comprehensive Statcom Control For Distribution And Transmission System Applications, Shubham Gupta

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis presents the development of a comprehensive STATCOM controller for load compensation, voltage regulation and voltage balancing in electric power distribution and transmission networks. The behavior of this controller is first validated with published results. Subsequently, the performance of this STATCOM controller is examined in a realistic Hydro One distribution feeder for accomplishing the compensation of both mildly and grossly unbalanced loads, and balancing of network voltages using PSCAD/EMTDC software. The STATCOM voltage control function is utilized for increasing the connectivity of wind plants in the same distribution feeder. The thesis further presents a frequency scanning technique for simple …

Novel Control And Harmonics Impact Of Pv Solar Farms, Byomakesh Das Dec 2012

Novel Control And Harmonics Impact Of Pv Solar Farms, Byomakesh Das

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis presents a novel application of Photovoltaic (PV) solar system inverter, both during night and day, as a dynamic reactive power compensator STATCOM. This technology, termed PV-STATCOM, is designed and developed for power factor correction in the networks of two utilities: Bluewater Power, Sarnia, and London Hydro. This thesis further describes for the first time, the harmonic impact studies on a utility distribution network in presence of the largest PV solar farm in Canada.

This novel utilization of a PV-STATCOM for power factor correction of induction motor loads is demonstrated with (i) electromagnetic transient simulation in EMTDC/PSCAD software, (ii) …

Novel Controls Of Photovoltaic (Pv) Solar Farms, Shah Arifur Rahman Oct 2012

Novel Controls Of Photovoltaic (Pv) Solar Farms, Shah Arifur Rahman

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Solar Farms are absolutely idle in the night and even during daytime operate below capacity in early mornings and late afternoons. Thus, the entire expensive asset of solar farms remains highly unutilized. This thesis presents novel technologies for utilization of PV solar farm inverter in nighttime for providing multiple benefits to power systems, as well as accomplishing the same objectives during the daytime from the inverter capacity left after production of real power. The new technology transforms a solar farm inverter functionally into a dynamic reactive power compensator known as STATCOM, and termed PV-STATCOM.

A novel coordinated control of PV-STATCOMs …

Subsynchronous Resonance In Wind Farms, Akshaya Kumar Moharana Oct 2012

Subsynchronous Resonance In Wind Farms, Akshaya Kumar Moharana

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Large-scale integration of wind farms in transmission networks has led to several challenges; one of which is the need for increased transmission capacity to transport a bulk amount of wind power. Series compensation is an established means of enhancing the power transfer capability of existing transmission lines and is being increasingly considered for integrating large wind power plants. However, series compensated transmission lines may cause subsynchronous resonance (SSR) in turbine-generators, which can lead to electrical instability at subsynchronous frequencies and potential turbine-generator shaft failures.

This thesis deals primarily with the potential of subsynchronous resonance in induction generator based wind farms …
