Policies such as paid parental leave have shown positive effects on work life balance, but there is a lack of information on leave policies within the American construction industry. Focusing on California, this research aimed to determine employee's understanding, use and acceptance of these leave policies. Using a survey, we gain a better understanding of these goals. Expanding On Leadership And Professional Skills For A Girls Build Summer Academy, Claire M. Gress

Construction Management

The construction industry has historically been male-dominated. Despite efforts by organizations and companies to encourage women to join the industry, there has been little progress in encouraging more women to enter the industry and getting them to stay. The construction management program at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo is developing and hosting a Girls Build Summer Academy to familiarize and encourage high school girls to explore construction as a career path. One segment of this boot camp includes leadership modules that will give the girls confidence and the skills they need to be successful leaders in construction. …

Fitting In: Analyzing The Fit Of Safety Vests In The Construction Industry, Lizette Galvez Puentes

Construction Management

The construction industry continues to be a male-dominated industry; however, recent decades have seen a change of demographic, including an increase of women leadership. With the changing demographics, there is a lack of awareness and proactive integration of properly fitting safety vests to accommodate different body types. A properly fitting safety vest is crucial in upholding the safety of individuals working on a construction site, where certain genders are more frequently caught on jobsite material. These circumstances hinder the purpose and functionality of the safety vest’s primary functions, which, for the wearer, is increased visibility and the comfort to carry …

Construction Outreach Event With Girl Scouts Of The Usa And Cal Poly Women In Construction, Melissa Mcgrath

Construction Management

For an industry that is struggling to find enough workers, the limited amount of women entering construction is proving to be a significant issue. Some of the major reasons for this are social norms and stereotypes that discourage young girls from entering traditionally male careers. Outreach events that present girls with more positive messages about their potential for starting a career in construction are beneficial for both the girls and the construction industry. Cal Poly’s Women in Construction Club (WIC) and Girl Scouts of the USA are two organizations that can aid this cause and inspire more girls to consider …

Construction Management

The Women in Construction Club’s Industry Mentorship program at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) is nearly a year old, yet the only data collected on the program was taken directly after it was created. The creation of the Industry Mentorship program, and subsequent data collection, were a previous senior project.
