Determination Of The Temperature Distribution Of The Ionized Portion Of The Jet From A Vortex Stabilized Plasma Generator Operating On Argon, G. Douglas Schellman

Masters Theses

"The interim thesis deals with the determination of the temperature distribution of a plasma jet operating on argon. It is the purpose of this thesis to present in detail the experimental process used and make a correlation of the experimental and theoretical results.

A copper enclosure was placed around the protruding flame, and the embedded thermocouple readings were taken and recorded. A stagnation temperature probe was inserted in the enclosure and moved both axially and transversely toward the flame taking readings at each pre-chosen interval. The exit temperature of the jet was obtained from a total energy balance.

The Effect Of Varying Sea Coal Fineness On Sea Coal Activity In Molding Sands, Laurence A. Cooley Jan 1965

The Effect Of Varying Sea Coal Fineness On Sea Coal Activity In Molding Sands, Laurence A. Cooley

Masters Theses

"An experiment was conducted in an attempt to establish a relation between sea coal activity in a facing sand and the particle size of the sea coal added to the sand. It was felt that if a sufficient difference in distribution of volatiles was detected, a correlation between particle size and activity of the sea coal within the test specimens might be established. The lack of positive evidence to support such a relationship is indicative that a variation in particle size does not promote volatile re-deposition within the range of particle sizes investigated for the particular weight per cent of …

Internal Friction Of Mixed-Alkali Silicate Glasses, James E. Shelby Jan 1965

Internal Friction Of Mixed-Alkali Silicate Glasses, James E. Shelby

Doctoral Dissertations

"The mixed alkali effect in silicate glasses was examined from internal friction measurements made over the temperature range from -190 to 500⁰C and at a frequency of 0.4 Hz. Supplemental measurements of the activation energy for the different internal friction peaks, dynamic shear modulus, density, and index of refraction were also made. All measurements were confined to silicate glasses containing mixtures of Li-Na, Li-K, Li-Rb, Li-Cs, Na-K, Na-Rb, Na-Cs, and K-Rb. Rötger's interpretation of the internal friction of mixed-alkali silicate glasses is shown to be incorrect. A previously unreported internal friction peak was observed whenever two different alkali oxides were …

Turbulence In Journal Bearings, Kashyap R. Mehta Jan 1965

Turbulence In Journal Bearings, Kashyap R. Mehta

Masters Theses

"In this investigation, an experimental study was performed on a journal bearing under laminar and turbulent flow conditions. Using relationships for friction factor developed previously by other investigators a comparison was made with results of this present investigation. Since the flow changes from laminar to turbulent with a change in speed of rotation, curves for friction factor as a function of speed were plotted. Various attempts to make the recording and measuring systems more sensitive were also made and are discussed in this thesis"--Abstract, page ii.

Buckling Strength Of Titanium Alloy Columns In The Elastic And Inelastic Range, Richard O. Rintoul Jan 1965

Buckling Strength Of Titanium Alloy Columns In The Elastic And Inelastic Range, Richard O. Rintoul

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study is to find experimentally the buckling strength of titanium alloy (Ti.-6Al.-4V.) columns and to determine a suitable equation to be used in the design of titanium columns in the elastic and inelastic range.

Effective length over radius of gyration ratios of from 178 to 16.1 were studied. High strength steel plates with cylindrical radii milled in the faces served as column ends while cylindrical radii ends were milled on the columns. SR-4 strain gages were used at the mid-points of all columns to determine lateral deflection and predict a theoretical buckling stress. Actual column loads …

On Time-Optimal Second Order Discrete Control Systems, Chao-Tai Li Jan 1965

On Time-Optimal Second Order Discrete Control Systems, Chao-Tai Li

Masters Theses

"The time optimal control problem in unforced discrete systems is studied in this thesis. Comparison is made between the discrete and the continuous control systems by means of minimum time isochrones. concerning optimal time, it is shown that using the discrete control system will take at most one more sampling period of time to go to equilibrium. An investigation is also made for the case when the time constant of the physical plant, G(s), and the control model are different. In such a case, an optimal trajectory can not be obtained. An adaptive process is proposed to adjust the model …

Detection Of Stress Corrosion Cracking In U-Bend Brass Specimens By An Electro-Mechanical Method, Floyd Elwin Loftin

Masters Theses

"An apparatus was designed and built which held two u-bend specimens. When the specimens were exposed to a corrodent, losses in strength were detected as a result of stress corrosion cracking. The apparatus was used to study time to failure of cartridge brass u-bend specimens exposed to ammoniacal copper sulfate solutions which varied in pH. A minimum time to failure, 1.06 hours, was detected at pH 7.2. The maximum time to failure, for the range studied, was 28.36 hours at pH 7.7.

No useful data were obtained in the range from pH 6.6 - 6.8. thick, black surface coatings were …

Transient Temperature Distribution In A Finite Cylinder And An Infinite Cylinder Subjected To Some Boundary Conditions, Harng-Sen Huang Jan 1965

Transient Temperature Distribution In A Finite Cylinder And An Infinite Cylinder Subjected To Some Boundary Conditions, Harng-Sen Huang

Masters Theses

"This thesis is concerned with the theoretical heat transfer analysis of solid cylinders. The first problem considered is the transient temperature distribution in a finite cylinder. This cylinder has a uniform initial temperature and a uniform constant surrounding temperature. This case is solved by the separation of variables. Combining the charts for the infinite cylinder and the charts for the infinite plate one can determine the solution to this case easily. If a uniform constant surface temperature is prescribed instead of a surrounding temperature, the solution can be obtained from the previous one by charging the Nusselt number to infinity. …

A Study Of Hot Shortness In Steels, Koang-Hwa Kung Jan 1965

A Study Of Hot Shortness In Steels, Koang-Hwa Kung

Masters Theses

"In this investigation an attempt was made to study the deformation of a number of laboratory-melted and commercial steels. A compressive load was applied to the steels at constant temperature and also during heating. The amounts and rates of deformation in these two types of tests was not consistent: in the constant temperature tests the hot short steels deformed more than the others while they appeared to deform less during heating. Metallographic examination of the sulfides indicated that the sulfides in cast steel are not stable and that they change during heating and hot working"--Introduction, page 2.

Investigation Of The Use Of Optics In The Analysis Of Structures, Jimmy D. Hahs Jan 1965

Investigation Of The Use Of Optics In The Analysis Of Structures, Jimmy D. Hahs

Masters Theses

"This study was made to determine the feasibility of the use of optics in the analysis of structures. Since the curvature of a beam due to a loading condition is a function of the moment, a measure of this curvature is a measurement of the moment.

This study used the relationship between object size and image size formed by a concave or convex reflective surface to determine the radius of curvature and the moment at the point.

Overhanging simply supported beams of plexiglass with concentrated loads at various positions were used to demonstrate the developed optical theory. Optical measurements were …

Cylinder-Head Surface Temperature And Maximum Pressure In A Diesel Engine, Jayant M. Patel Jan 1965

Cylinder-Head Surface Temperature And Maximum Pressure In A Diesel Engine, Jayant M. Patel

Masters Theses

"This report presents the result of an experimental investigation on the effect of 1) fuel consumption in a diesel engine on the mean cylinder-head surface temperature 2) engine speed and load on the maximum cylinder pressure.

A fast-response thermocouple was fixed in the cylinder head and temperatures were measured for various load and speed conditions. An attempt was made to record a transient surface temperature versus crank-angle diagram. Some doubt as to the reliability of this recording may arise because of the very small amount of time lag in the thermocouple action. This is immaterial to the subject of this …

Thermal Degradation Of Poly (Methyl Methacrylate) In Solution In Various Solvents, Ya-Chih Chen Jan 1965

Thermal Degradation Of Poly (Methyl Methacrylate) In Solution In Various Solvents, Ya-Chih Chen

Masters Theses

"A study has been made of the thermal degradation of poly (methyl methacrylate) of different molecular weights in toluene, ethyl acetate and chloroform. Four poly (methyl methacrylate) samples having molecular weights of 2,210,000, 733,000, 320,000, and 43,00, respectively were studied in this investigation. The results indicated that the polymer having a molecular weight of 2,210,000 undergoes degradation while the low molecular weight polymers having molecular weights of 733,000, 320,000, 43,000 undergo reverse polymerization"--Abstract, page [ii].

Epoxy Resin Admixture For Concrete, Kuo-Chu Hu Jan 1965

Epoxy Resin Admixture For Concrete, Kuo-Chu Hu

Masters Theses

"This thesis describes laboratory tests on concrete having epoxy as an admixture. Cylinders for compression and elastic modulus tests were cured under two different curing conditions, standard laboratory cure and a simulated job cure. Beams cured under laboratory conditions were tested for flexural strength. Test results show the compressive strength increases with an increase of epoxy content for job curing conditions. However, compressive and flexural strengths of specimens cured under laboratory conditions show a slight decrease. The elastic modulus of concrete containing epoxy also decreases in comparison to ordinary concrete"--Abstract, page ii.

Evaluation Of Pile Bearing Capacity By Use Of The Wave Equation, Stuart H. Williams Jan 1965

Evaluation Of Pile Bearing Capacity By Use Of The Wave Equation, Stuart H. Williams

Masters Theses

"The wave equation method of evaluating pile bearing capacity is investigated by using data obtained from a comprehensive pile testing program. Modifications which create a more accurate and realistic approach are made to the method proposed by previous investigators. With the use of these modifications, correlation between observed and computed results is more readily obtained. Selected pile formulas in the empirical, static, and dynamic categories are reviewed so that a direct comparison between these and the wave equation method can be made"--Abstract, page ii.

Instrumentation Of A Diesel Engine For Measuring Cylinder Head Temperature, And Pressure At Various Crank Angles, Raman A. Patel Jan 1965

Instrumentation Of A Diesel Engine For Measuring Cylinder Head Temperature, And Pressure At Various Crank Angles, Raman A. Patel

Masters Theses

"In this investigation, an attempt has been made to measure the instantaneous pressures in the cylinder and the transient temperatures of cylinder head versus crank angle in a Diesel engine. A strain-gage pressure transducer and a sensitive surface thermocouple were used. The pressure transducer was practically free from temperature influence and strain effects caused by installation. It had a greatly reduced sensitivity to vibrations compared with other available types of pressure transducers. The thermocouple had a very short response time. A device enabling very accurate measurement of crank-angle was constructed. Appropriate quantities were displayed on the screen of an oscilloscope …

Circular Polarization From A Corner Reflector Antenna With Tilted Dipole Of Arbitrary Length, Ruben A. Carrizo M. Jan 1965

Circular Polarization From A Corner Reflector Antenna With Tilted Dipole Of Arbitrary Length, Ruben A. Carrizo M.

Masters Theses

"The problem consists of the development of the electric far field equations for a forty-five degree corner reflector antenna with a tilted dipole, of arbitrary length, centered at the corner bisector plane to produce circularly-polarized radiation. The far field expression was developed as a function of the spherical coordinate system variables and placed in Fortran language in order to determine the dipole locations which would produce circularly-polarized radiation. At such dipole locations the field patterns were plotted in the [theta] = [pi]/2 and [phi] = 0.0 planes. Computations were made by the IBM 1620 digital computer"--Abstract, page ii.

Temperature Distribution In Thermal Boundary Layers (In Free Convection) Using A Modified Schlieren Method, Philip Ling Chen Jan 1965

Temperature Distribution In Thermal Boundary Layers (In Free Convection) Using A Modified Schlieren Method, Philip Ling Chen

Masters Theses

"A simple optical apparatus, the Schlieren interferometer, was constructed for the quantitative investigation of free convection heat transfer from solid bodies. The photographic results, checked by using thermocouples, were used in evaluating the temperature distribution, the key to the solution of these problems. Interpretation of the photographic results was made using the simple calculation for the conventional interferogram and the Dale-Gladstone law. Although the experiments were limited to a heated flat plate and a heated wire, two dimensional test pieces of irregular configuration can be investigated by the same apparatus with simple modifications. The photographs of the conventional Schlieren, the …
