Corrosion Of Aluminum Current Collector In Cost Effective Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Batteries, Shengyi Li Dec 2016

Corrosion Of Aluminum Current Collector In Cost Effective Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Batteries, Shengyi Li

Theses and Dissertations

Rechargeable lithium ion batteries (LIB) have been widely used as commercial energy storage systems for portable equipment, electronic devices and high power applications (e.g. electronic vehicles). One issue with the commercialized LIB is that expensive, highly toxic and flammable organic solvents are used in the electrolyte and the fabrication process of electrodes. The toxic organic based solvents increase the production cost and lead to significant safety concerns in the event of a battery overcharge or short circuit. The recent development of “green manufacturing” technology allows manufacturers to replace the organic solvents used in the cathode coating process by aqueous based …

Simulation Of Value Stream Mapping And Discrete Optimization Of Energy Consumption In Modular Construction, Md Mukul Chowdhury Nov 2016

Simulation Of Value Stream Mapping And Discrete Optimization Of Energy Consumption In Modular Construction, Md Mukul Chowdhury

Theses and Dissertations

With the increased practice of modularization and prefabrication, the construction industry gained the benefits of quality management, improved completion time, reduced site disruption and vehicular traffic, and improved overall safety and security. Whereas industrialized construction methods, such as modular and manufactured buildings, have evolved over decades, core techniques used in prefabrication plants vary only slightly from those employed in traditional site-built construction. With a focus on energy and cost efficient modular construction, this research presents the development of a simulation, measurement and optimization system for energy consumption in the manufacturing process of modular construction. The system is based on Lean …

Rational Design Of Cathode Materials For High Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, Xi Chen Aug 2016

Rational Design Of Cathode Materials For High Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, Xi Chen

Theses and Dissertations

Sulfur, one of most promising cathode candidates for next-generation lithium ion batteries, shows a limited cycling performance due to its shuttling effect, low conductivity, self-discharge and volume expansion during lithiation and delithiation process. According to the operation principles, failure mechanism, and recent progress on lithium-sulfur batteries, here we developed several scalable and rational synthesis methods for high performance cathode materials. We dissolved commercial sulfur to anhydrous ethylenediamine (EDA) to form an EDA-S precursor, and then we reduced the sulfur particles size at conductive carbon black substrate. The 70% theoretical capacity of sulfur cathode battery was obtained. We also melted commercial …

Addressing Instability Issues In Microgrids Caused By Constant Power Loads Using Energy Storage Systems, Eklas Hossain Aug 2016

Addressing Instability Issues In Microgrids Caused By Constant Power Loads Using Energy Storage Systems, Eklas Hossain

Theses and Dissertations

Renewable energy sources, the most reasonable fuel-shift taken over the naturally limited conventional fuels, necessarily deal with the self-functional microgrid system rather than the traditional grid distribution system. The study shows that the microgrid system, a comparatively low-powered system, experiences the challenge of instability due to the constant power load (CPL) from many electronic devices such as inverter-based systems. In this dissertation, as a methodical approach to mitigate the instability complication, AC microgrid stability is thoroughly investigated for each and every considerable parameter of the system. Furthermore, a specific loading limit is depicted by evaluating the stability margin from the …

Transient Control Of Synchronous Machine Active And Reactive Power In Micro-Grid Power Systems, Luke Gerard Weber Aug 2016

Transient Control Of Synchronous Machine Active And Reactive Power In Micro-Grid Power Systems, Luke Gerard Weber

Theses and Dissertations

There are two main topics associated with this dissertation. The first is to investigate

phase–to–neutral fault current magnitude occurring in generators with multiple zero–sequence

current sources. The second is to design, model, and tune a linear control system for oper-

ating a micro–grid in the event of a separation from the electric power system.

In the former case, detailed generator, AC8B excitation system, and four–wire electric

power system models are constructed. Where available, manufacturers data is used to

validate the generator and exciter models. A gain–delay with frequency droop control

is used to model an internal combustion engine and governor. …

A New Paradigm Of Maximizing The Wind And Solar Penetration– A Economical Assessment, Yuming Chen May 2016

A New Paradigm Of Maximizing The Wind And Solar Penetration– A Economical Assessment, Yuming Chen

Theses and Dissertations

Wind and solar energies are the most potential and widely-used renewable energies. But in most cases these energies cannot be maximized because of transmission line capacity and their remote location. Therefore, this thesis proposes a new paradigm which using battery transportation and logistics instead of transmission line, to maximize wind and solar energies. The main focus of this work is to investigate the economical feasibilities of this new paradigm.

In the first part, different models and application are presented. The purpose is finding an appropriate model which can make full use of existing grid resources such as transmission line and …

The Effects Of Geomagnetic Disturbances On Electrical Power Systems, Benjamin J. Hynes May 2016

The Effects Of Geomagnetic Disturbances On Electrical Power Systems, Benjamin J. Hynes

Theses and Dissertations

Solar storms that generate coronal mass ejections are a cause for concern due to the damage that they cause in high voltage power grids. Geomagnetically induced currents can be introduced onto the grid and cause many adverse effects. The vulnerability of the bulk electric power systems to such events has increased during the past few decades because the power system transmission lines have become more interconnected and have increased in length. Real and reactive power flows, voltage fluctuations, frequency shifts, undesired relay operations, higher order harmonic currents, undesired damage to assets and failure of assets are all possible outcomes from …

Design And Optimization Of Hybrid Energy Storage For Photovoltaic Power Fluctuation Smoothing Based On Frequency Analysis, Ruirui Yang May 2016

Design And Optimization Of Hybrid Energy Storage For Photovoltaic Power Fluctuation Smoothing Based On Frequency Analysis, Ruirui Yang

Theses and Dissertations

A proper design of energy storage system (ESS) can effectively smooth the photovoltaic (PV) output power fluctuation, lower the cost, and improve the power quality and stability.

According to the response characteristics of different energy storage equipment, an optimal hybrid EES sizing method is proposed based on frequency analysis. A hybrid ESS including lead-acid battery, lithium battery and electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC) is selected to smooth out PV power fluctuation and meet both power and energy requirement of the power grid. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) method is applied for analyzing the spectrum of unwanted PV fluctuation. From the FFT analysis, …
