Pioneering Concepts For 3d Electromagnetics, Cesar Valle Dec 2022

Pioneering Concepts For 3d Electromagnetics, Cesar Valle

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This work introduces two paradigm changing concepts that will push electromagnetics (EM) to the third dimension. The first of that work involves the introduction of the conformal Spatially Variant Lattice (SVL) algorithm that can conform any periodic structure onto arbitrary curvature. The algorithms robustness is confirmed by conforming a frequency selective surface (FSS) onto an extreme paraboloid, proving the algorithms robustness on high sloping surfaces. Three FSSs were made in total; a standard flat FSS, a projected FSS, and a FSS made through the conformal SVL algorithm. Measured results are shown and match well to simulation.Secondly, in the world of …

Algorithms For Exploration Of Advanced Electromagnetic Concepts, Asad Ullah Hil Gulib

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

3D printing is revolutionizing the manufacturing industry and is now being considered in the electronics industry. The creation of the worldâ??s first 3D volumetric circuit has made a way to make circuits smaller, lighter, into unconventional form factors and exploit physics like anisotropy more effectively than planar geometries can. While this is exciting, many problems must be solved to make 3D volumetric circuits more efficient. One of these problems is electromagnetic interference and mutual coupling between the circuit components that are expected to increase in high-frequency 3D circuits. Spatially variant anisotropic metamaterials (SVAMs) could be a solution to overcome this …

Independent And Simultaneous Control Of Electromagnetic Wave Properties In Self-Collimating Photonic Crystals Using Spatial Variance, Jesus Javier Gutierrez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Photonic crystals are engineered periodic structures that provide great control over electromagnetic waves. One of these mechanisms is self-collimation, in which the electromagnetic wave travels through the photonic crystal along an axis of the lattice without diffracting or spreading. This mechanism of self-collimation is a dispersion phenomenon, which is dependent on the unit cell's physical and geometrical characteristics. An algorithm for generating spatially variant lattices (SVL) was developed that can change geometrical properties in photonic crystals as a function of position, like unit cell orientation, fill fraction, symmetry, and others in a manner that is smooth, continuous, and virtually free …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The use of a matrix-free, memory-efficient approach to generate large-scale spatially variant lattices (SVL) was explored. A matrix-free iterative SVL generation algorithm was formulated and then implemented with a tremendous memory reduction observed. The algorithm consists of solving first-order central finite-differences along the entirety of the problem space point-by-point to obtain the grating phase function Φ(𝑠⃗) to which all desired spatially variant lattice properties are applied to. The algorithm was studied to identify key areas of data and task parallelism to exploit in heterogeneous computing systems consisting of clusters of central processing units (CPU) and graphics processing units (GPU) combinations. …

Hybrid 3d Printing Demonstrated By Arbitrary 3d Meandering Transmission Lines, Ubaldo Robles

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This Dissertation focuses on the automation of multi-material direct write three-dimensional (3D) manufacturing of arbitrary metal-dielectric structures. The technology was demonstrated by manufacturing 3D meandering interconnects and transmission lines (TLs). Manufacturing 3D functional electronics with multiple materials required pushing the current state of 3D printing (3DP) technology to utilize simultaneous multi-material processes combined with sophisticated slicing and bonding under one process. Multi material 3DP is known as hybrid 3DP. This research pioneered the process for producing meandering transmission lines, starting with design and manufacturing, using hybrid 3DP through micro-dispensing and fuse deposition modeling. The research starts by 3DP magnetic and …

Magnetotelluric Analysis Of Central Kenya Kenyan Rift Volcanoes For Geothermal Development, Anna Wairimu Mwangi

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Abstract

High temperature geothermal resources are vast along rift margins because of emplacement of magma in shallow crust. This is the case along the Kenyan Rift valley also known as the Gregory Rift. It is the Eastern arm of the East African rift and a chain of volcanoes along the rift graben characterizes it. We use (MT) magnetotelluric method to image beneath the peralkaline province of the Kenya Rift i.e. Olkaria, Eburru, Badlands, and Longonot volcanoes. The resistivity structure shows active geothermal activity happening at the upper 3km from the subsurface as evidenced by low resistivity cap rock comprised of …

Dielectric Prism Antenna, Jose Antonio Avila

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

3D printing is revolutionizing the development and manufacturing of devices. Currently multi-material 3D printing, like metals plus dielectrics, is in the early stages and not very accessible. This work set out to develop an all-dielectric antenna that could be 3D printed with current widely accessible 3D printing technologies. The antenna developed is an all-dielectric ultra-thin antenna with a simple geometry. The antenna radiates by using total internal reflection and a circulating mode operating as a leaky whispering gallery mode. We are calling the antenna the dielectric prism antenna because it acts like an optical prism. The dielectric prism antenna was …

Digitally Manufactured Spatially Variant Photonic Crystals, Javier Jair Pazos Jan 2014

Digitally Manufactured Spatially Variant Photonic Crystals, Javier Jair Pazos

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Metamaterials and photonic crystals are engineered composites that exhibit electromagnetic properties superior to those found in nature. They have been shown to produce novel and useful phenomena that allow extraordinary control over the electromagnetic field. One of these phenomena is self-collimation, an effect observed in photonic crystals in which a beam of light propagates without diffraction and is forced to flow in the direction of the crystal. Self-collimation however, like many of the mechanisms enabled through dispersion engineering, is effective in directions only along the principal axes of the lattice. To this effect, a general purpose synThesis procedure was developed …

Magnetic nanoparticle ensembles have received a lot of attention, stemming in part from their current and potential applications in biomedicine and in the development of high-density magnetic storage media. Key to the functionality of these systems are microscopic structures and mechanisms that make them exhibit unique properties and behave differently from their bulk counterparts.

We studied microscopic structures and processes that dictate macroscopic properties, behavior and functionality of magnetic nanoparticle ensembles. As the temperature T strongly influences the magnetic behavior of these systems, we studied temperature dependent magnetic properties using AC-susceptibility and DC-magnetization measurements carried out over a broad range …
