A Study On Distributed Generation With A Focus On Solar Power, Shravan Kumar Tomar Jan 2019

A Study On Distributed Generation With A Focus On Solar Power, Shravan Kumar Tomar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Centralized generation is when electric power is produced in a large scale of tens of MWs and is located away from the end user. This kind of production is connected to a series of high-voltage transmission lines. Electricity is then delivered to the end user through a network of distribution grids. Centralized generation tend to have multiple end user with multiple user profiles.

Distributed Generation is when is produced in a small scale and is located at the site of or very close to the end user. There are many ways distributed generation can be achieved, Solar power being the …

Control Of Power Electronic Interfaces In Distributed Generation., Mohammad Mohebbi Dec 2017

Control Of Power Electronic Interfaces In Distributed Generation., Mohammad Mohebbi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Renewable energy has gained popularity as an alternative resource for electric power generation. As such, Distributed Generation (DG) is expected to open new horizons to electric power generation. Most renewable energy sources cannot be connected to the load directly. Integration of the renewable energy sources with the load has brought new challenges in terms of the system’s stability, voltage regulation and power quality issues. For example, the output power, voltage and frequency of an example wind turbine depend on the wind speed, which fluctuate over time and cannot be forecasted accurately. At the same time, the nonlinearity of residential electrical …

Risk Optimized Microgrid Resource Management, Thomas William Cashel Iii Jan 2017

Risk Optimized Microgrid Resource Management, Thomas William Cashel Iii

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis proposes a risk based price adjustment method for a day ahead scheduling of a distribution side tiered community microgrid within a transactive energy style market. The system is organized into a master controller and local controller confïguration to simulate behind meter activity that is not visible to the master controller. Conditional value at risk is used to asses the risk of distributed energy resources in each local controller and the risk for each local controller is aggregated providing each local controller a single risk value. Each device's, or local controller's, risk value is used to adjust the price …

Voltage Regulation Of Low Voltage Distribution Networks, Manisha Maharjan Jan 2017

Voltage Regulation Of Low Voltage Distribution Networks, Manisha Maharjan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The modern voltage distribution systems consist of distributed generation (DG), like photovoltaics (PV) and wind. These resources are inexhaustible and environmentally friendly. The existing low voltage (LV) distribution networks are typically designed for unidirectional power flow. The integration of DG makes the LV distribution networks prone to difficulties related to voltage, frequency, and power quality. The main challenges in the integration of DG occur due to the intermittent nature of DG. The amount of DG compared with the total generation resource on a power system network is measured as penetration. The system undergoes through reverse power flow when there is …

Optimal Distribution Network Reconfiguration Using Meta-Heuristic Algorithms, Arash Asrari Jan 2015

Optimal Distribution Network Reconfiguration Using Meta-Heuristic Algorithms, Arash Asrari

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Finding optimal configuration of power distribution systems topology is an NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem. It becomes more complex when time varying nature of loads in large-scale distribution systems is taken into account. In the second chapter of this dissertation, a systematic approach is proposed to tackle the computational burden of the procedure. To solve the optimization problem, a novel adaptive fuzzy based parallel genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed that employs the concept of parallel computing in identifying the optimal configuration of the network. The integration of fuzzy logic into GA enhances the efficiency of the parallel GA by adaptively modifying …

Smart Distributed Generation Systems Using Improved Islanding Detection And Event Classification, Bikiran Guha Jan 2015

Smart Distributed Generation Systems Using Improved Islanding Detection And Event Classification, Bikiran Guha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Distributed Generation (DG) sources have become an integral part of modern decentralized power systems. However, the interconnection of DG systems to the power grid can present several operational challenges. One such major challenge is islanding detection. Islanding occurs when a DG system is disconnected from the rest of the power grid. Islanding can present serious safety hazards and therefore an accurate and fast islanding detection technique is mandated by DG interconnection standards such as IEEE 1547 and UL 1741. Conventional islanding detection techniques passively monitor the local power system parameters such as voltage and frequency to detect islanding. These techniques …

Hosting Capacity Calculations In Power Systems, Mansoor T. Alturki Nov 2014

Hosting Capacity Calculations In Power Systems, Mansoor T. Alturki

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this thesis is to investigate and calculate Hosting Capacity in power systems to identify the maximum amount of renewable energy resources that can be deployed. After connecting distributed generation to distribution system, the performance index of the distribution system will improve or deteriorate. The point which is between the acceptable deterioration and unacceptable deterioration is the hosting capacity. This research is specifically concerned with the effect of increasing distributed generation on the performance index in distribution networks and finding the maximum point of the acceptable deterioration.

The hosting capacity is the amount of distributed generation that can …

A Comparison Of Two Method For Dg Optimizing In Power System, Yu Li Aug 2014

A Comparison Of Two Method For Dg Optimizing In Power System, Yu Li

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this paper, we mainly focus on using new method to solve the DG problem in order to reducing the loss. We start from comparing two new method. We list out the mathematics theory of the two methods. And then, we using a 33 bus modeling to show which method has a better function on reducing the loss for system. After that, we take the better method to reducing the loss for two cases (14 bus , 34 bus modeling). At last, we conclude the result of the research and give some comment on the future works.

Transient And Distributed Algorithms To Improve Islanding Detection Capability Of Inverter Based Distributed Generation, Mohamed Al Hosani Jan 2013

Transient And Distributed Algorithms To Improve Islanding Detection Capability Of Inverter Based Distributed Generation, Mohamed Al Hosani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recently, a lot of research work has been dedicated toward enhancing performance, reliability and integrity of distributed energy resources that are integrated into distribution networks. The problem of islanding detection and islanding prevention (i.e. anti-islanding) has stimulated a lot of research due to its role in severely compromising the safety of working personnel and resulting in equipment damages. Various Islanding Detection Methods (IDMs) have been developed within the last ten years in anticipation of the tremendous increase in the penetration of Distributed Generation (DG) in distribution system. This work proposes new IDMs that rely on transient and distributed behaviors to …
