The Performance Of Quaternary Amplitude Modulation With Quaternary Spreading In The Presence Of Interfering Signals, Allison Manhard Dec 2015

The Performance Of Quaternary Amplitude Modulation With Quaternary Spreading In The Presence Of Interfering Signals, Allison Manhard

All Theses

Multiple-access digital communications is considered with direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DS-SS) quadrature amplitude modulation and quaternary spreading in each transmission. Each transmitted signal undergoes attenuation and a delay at a receiver in the additive white Gaussian noise channel. The receiver uses coherent demodulation with a correlation detector synchronized to the one of the K received signals so that the K - 1 other transmissions act as interference. The average probability of error at the output of the detector is determined using Monte Carlo simulation and compared with an approximation in which the interference component in each detection statistic is approximated by a …

Phasor Measurement Unit Deployment Approach For Maximum Observability Considering Vulnerability Analysis, Jyoti Paudel Dec 2015

Phasor Measurement Unit Deployment Approach For Maximum Observability Considering Vulnerability Analysis, Jyoti Paudel

All Theses

In recent years, there has been growing interest of synchrophasor measurements like Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) Power systems are now being gradually populated by PMU since they provide significant phasor information for the protection and control of power systems during normal and abnormal situations. There are several applications of PMUs, out of which state estimation is a widely used. To improve the robustness of state estimation, different approaches for placement of PMUs have been studied. This thesis introduces an approach for deployment the PMUs considering its vulnerability. Two different analysis have been considered to solve the problem of locating PMUs …

A Training Assistant Tool For The Automated Visual Inspection System, Mohan Karthik Ramaraj Dec 2015

A Training Assistant Tool For The Automated Visual Inspection System, Mohan Karthik Ramaraj

All Theses

This thesis considers the problem of assisting a human user setting up an automated Visual Inspection (VI) system. The VI system uses a stationary camera on an automobile assembly line to inspect cars as they pass by. The inspection process is intended to identify when parts have been missed or incorrect parts have been assembled. The result is reported to a human working on the assembly line who then can take corrective actions. As originally developed, the system requires a setup phase in which the human user places the camera and records a video of at least 30 minutes length …

Detection And Recovery From Camera Bump During Automated Inspection Of Automobiles On An Assembly Line, Shawn Mathew Dec 2015

Detection And Recovery From Camera Bump During Automated Inspection Of Automobiles On An Assembly Line, Shawn Mathew

All Theses

This thesis details the steps taken to detect and compensate for camera bumps while per- forming part identification using VI at the BMW manufacturing plant and on the simulation testbed. For the system presented here to work, the user is required to record a video from the camera before the camera is bumped and one after the camera has been bumped. The premise behind the method suggested here is that the transformation between the background in the pre- and post-bump video will be equal to the transformation in the foreground. A Background extraction program is used to generate a background …

Single Particle And Biological Cell Detection By A Radio Frequency Interferometer, Zheng Wang Dec 2015

Single Particle And Biological Cell Detection By A Radio Frequency Interferometer, Zheng Wang

All Theses

This thesis presents a series of studies on single particle and biological cell detection and differentiation by a radio frequency (RF) interferometer system. Several techniques, such as dielectrophoresis (DEP), time domain method and 3D focusing have been illustrated and investigated to demonstrate the capacity of interrogating the electric property of single particle or biological cell by the RF interferometer. Silica particles and live yeast cells are trapped at the sensing area by DEP force and detected by the RF sensor. Solutions of particle mixtures (~4 μm silica and ~10 μm polystyrene) and cell mixtures (viable and non-viable yeast cells, normal …

Electrical Characterization Of Gold And Platinum Thin Film Electrodes With Polyaniline Modified Surfaces, John Aggas Dec 2015

Electrical Characterization Of Gold And Platinum Thin Film Electrodes With Polyaniline Modified Surfaces, John Aggas

All Theses

Recent studies into soft organic electronics have burgeoned as a result of discoveries of conducting polymers such as polyaniline, polythiophene, and polypyrrole. However, in order to make these conducting polymers suitable for in vivo soft organic electronics, they must be developed so that they can be biocompatible and provide accurate sensing. Chitosan, a naturally occurring polymer structure found in exoskeletons of crustaceans, has been studied for its biocompatible properties. Composites of polyaniline (PAn), an intrinsically conductive polymer (ICP) and chitosan (Chi), a biopolymer, were developed and applied to gold and platinum Thin Film Electrode (TFE) devices. Electropolymerization and drop cast …

Continuum Robots For Space Applications Based On Layer-Jamming Scales With Stiffness Capability, Jessie Lee C. Santiago May 2015

Continuum Robots For Space Applications Based On Layer-Jamming Scales With Stiffness Capability, Jessie Lee C. Santiago

All Theses

Continuum robots, which have continuous mechanical structures comparable to the flexibility in elephant trunks and octopus arms, have been primarily geared toward the medical and defense communities. In space, however, NASA projects these robots to have a place in irregular inspection routines. The inherent compliance and bending of these continuum arms are especially suitable for inspection in obstructed spaces to ensure proper equipment functionality. In this paper, we propose a new solution that improves on the functionality of previous continuum robots, via a novel mechanical scaly layer-jamming design. Layer-jamming assisted continuum arms have previously required pneumatic sources for actuation, which …
